The trap is impressive, but from the footage it's pretty obvious that there should also be a scaled-up version for catching rats. This one worked on the smaller rats, but the big ones need more headspace to walk into the trap.

Some fifty years ago my late grandmother had probably 10, maybe more, similar DIY trap buckets on her land. We gradually quit it when the catch became mostly baby hedgehogs rather than mice. It appeared that as the trees in the area matured, the former field became a forest, and hedgehogs took over and drove away smaller rodents.

So based on your videos I bought the flip and slide bucket trap, it showed up yesterday, I assembled it and spread some peanut butter and seed up under the hood, put this thing in my chicken coop around 7:30 pm last night, checked it a 7:00 this morning, 34 mice, now I knew there were mice in the chicken coop ( large walk in coop 8x10), but I never expected it to be this many, gonna buy at least 2 more of these, 1 for the garage and 1 for the tractor shed ( barn), thanks for the review and the recommendation, money well spent

I bought one of these. It is the best mouse trap ever. The mice never get the bait and it resets itself. I just used peanut butter. . If you decide you don’t need it for a while and you put it away, be sure you clean the bait off of it and don’t leave it set up ready to catch mice. Lol. I put mine away, I just took the little ladder off and set it in the shed. Didn’t mess with it for months. Next time I checked there was three decayed rats in it. Decomposing. Yea, very nasty.

Hi Shawn! Mate that's gotta be one of, if not the best mouse catcher ever! One possible enhancement - stick some foam tape or something similar under the yellow lid to quieten the seesaw part from making a bang noise when it swings back up. The clang noise seems to scare off a few of the other mice a little. One or two people said the sound was a little annoying late at night as well. Also, could the entrance be made a bit bigger so that larger rats could fit in?

Yeah, Shawn tested a wide-table tilt trap somewhat similar to this that worked very well too, but it was made in Sweden(?) by a company long since out of business. (I couldn't find any for sale on the internet.) The wideness of the table seems to give rodents a false sense of security, even more so than the usual walk-the-plant type tilt traps. This is cool in that it has a cap so they can't easily jump off/out, and putting the bait up in the roof is a great idea. Still attracts rodents, but the trap mechanism isn't thrown off by the extra weight. Just a great design.

The trap may work for mice in a controlled environment. I did not catch a single mouse in an outdoor environment. There was evidence of it not working as the peanut butter was eaten clean without a catch. I did catch a few chipmunks until the plank warped from heat and they would no longer walk it. Also, rodents began chewing through the lid to eat the peanut butter from the top.
@MS-60663
@MS-60663 10 ай бұрын
The "flip-floor" needs a damper, so that, when it drops and snaps back into place, there is no clicking sound that could scare away some of the rodents. Also, the trap door could be more stable at the middle, so that the mouse will go completely towards the tip, before gravity takes it down. A few mice seemed to find the perfect balancing point where they would not fall. A delayed drop, along with a rubber damper to make it silent, perhaps?

The way you always take care to mention how you don’t want your pet mice being harmed, so you’ll be placing in some cloth to cushion the drop reminds me so much of the time Mr. Rogers received a letter from a blind kid who was worried he was forgetting to feed his fish, so he always made sure to say he was feeding the fish when he did so. I suspect you might be able to improve the performance (in live trap mode) slightly by doing 2 things: - Put something on the lid to quiet the sound when the flip resets so they don't get scared off, like some rubber tape where the flip hits - Put a couple tiny slits near the bottom of the bucket and a bit of food in there so trapped mice act like a "stool pidgeon" and attract more (live mice inside with food makes it seem safer to new mice coming in)

If only Tom knew about this, Jerry might have been a thought of the past.

Contrary to popular belief Tom and Jerry are actually best friends, Tom only pretends to hate Jerry because if he doesn't his owner will replace him with a cat that will actually kill Jerry

It always amazes me how insanely smart rats are compared to mice.

@@ICEknightnine no you see it in a lot of other videos that rats usually do not fall for the same trap twice and if they see another rat get trapped they'll be extra careful and usually will stay away. Mice just seem to pile themselves on and on with no regard to what just happened to a fellow mouse.

Yeah, it’s what makes them so hard to get rid of. When we’ve had rat problems we’ve never caught more that 2 on any kind of trap because they learn how to avoid them. They’ve tripped snap trips without being caught, flipped over glue traps, and just avoided those spinner traps over similar buckets. Guess I’ll have to try this one next.

@@TheDevilsbard i think the best would be electrocution. To have a really really large board llaced jn a rokm the rats frequent that shocks them dead when stepped on. Since the board would be very large, I'm guessing the rags won't stay away from jt like they would from a small trap

There was this video of a rat using a stick to set off a snap trap on youtube. I live in the city and a rat got in during lockdown. It somehow managed to eat off the snap trap I bought. We finally caught it using a cage trap after leaving the trap unset for 3 days. Set it free in front of 3 useless cats which couldn't even catch it.
