Welcome to the eighth day already for historical facts! Today we talk about our favorite king, Richard the Lionheart. Richard I (8 September 1157 - 6 April 1199) was King of England from 1189 until his death in 1199. He also ruled as Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine and Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, and Count of Poitiers, Anjou, Maine, and Nantes, and was overlord of Brittany at various times during the same period. He was the third of five sons of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine and seemed unlikely to become king, but all his brothers except the youngest, John, predeceased their father. Richard is known as Richard Cœur de Lion or Richard the Lionheart because of his reputation as a great military leader and warrior. Nevertheless, he was seen as a pious hero by his subjects. He remains one of the few kings of England remembered more commonly by his epithet than his regnal number, and is an enduring iconic figure both in England and in France. Richard was born on 8 September 1157, as the son of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was a younger brother of Henry the Young King and Matilda, Duchess of Saxony. As a younger son of King Henry II, he was not expected to ascend the throne. Richard was said to be very attractive; his hair was between red and blond, and he was light-eyed with a pale complexion. According to Clifford Brewer, he was 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m), although that is unverifiable since his remains have been lost since at least the French Revolution. The Itinerarium peregrinorum et gesta regis Ricardi, a Latin prose narrative of the Third Crusade, states that: "He was tall, of elegant build; the colour of his hair was between red and gold; his limbs were supple and straight. He had long arms suited to wielding a sword. His long legs matched the rest of his body". Overall, people like Roger of Howden were chiefly concerned with the politics of the relationship between Richard and King Philip of France. Gillingham has addressed theories suggesting that this political relationship was also sexually intimate, which he posits probably stemmed from an official record announcing that, as a symbol of unity between the two countries, the kings of England and France had slept overnight in the same bed. Gillingham has characterized this as "an accepted political act, nothing sexual about it;..." The Rebellion: Henry the Young King instigated rebellion against Henry II; he wanted to reign independently over at least part of the territory his father had promised him, and to break away from his dependence on Henry II, who controlled the purse strings. There were rumors that Eleanor might have encouraged her sons to revolt against their father. Unfortunately, the rebellion was destroyed by Henry II. In the peace treaty it's terms excluded Richard but he was given control of two castles in Poitou and half the income of Aquitaine; Henry the Young King was given two castles in Normandy; and Geoffrey was permitted half of Brittany. Eleanor remained Henry II's prisoner until his death, partly as insurance for Richard's good behaviour. From 1180 to 1183 the tension between Henry and Richard grew, as King Henry commanded Richard to pay homage to Henry the Young King, but Richard refused. However, Richard and his army succeeded in holding back the invading armies, and they executed any prisoners. The conflict paused briefly in June 1183 when the Young King died. With the death of Henry the Young King, Richard became the eldest surviving son and therefore heir to the English crown. King Henry demanded that Richard give up Aquitaine (which he planned to give to his youngest son John as his inheritance). Richard refused, and conflict continued between them. This refusal is what finally made Henry II bring Queen Eleanor out of prison. He sent her to Aquitaine and demanded that Richard give up his lands to his mother, who would once again rule over those lands. The Third Crusade: When Richard was raising funds for the Third Crusade, he was said to declare, "I would have sold London if I could find a buyer". After the Campaigns in Sicily and Cyprus, Richard and his forces aided in the capture of Acre, despite Richard's serious illness. At one point, while sick from arnaldia (called trench fever since WW1), a disease similar to scurvy, he picked off guards on the walls with a crossbow, while being carried on a stretcher covered "in a great silken quilt" Richard had kept 2,700 Muslim prisoners as hostages against Saladin fulfilling all the terms of the surrender of the lands around Acre. King Philip, before leaving the Holy Land had entrusted his prisoners to Conrad, but Richard forced him to hand them over to him. Richard feared his forces being bottled up in Acre as he believed his campaign could not advance with the prisoners in train. He, therefore, ordered all the prisoners executed. He then moved south, defeating Saladin's forces at the Battle of Arsuf 30 miles (50 km) north of Jaffa on 7 September 1191. Saladin attempted to harass Richard's army into breaking its formation in order to defeat it in detail. Richard maintained his army's defensive formation, however, until the Hospitallers broke ranks to charge the right wing of Saladin's forces. Richard then ordered a general counterattack, which won the battle. Arsuf was an important victory. The Muslim army was not destroyed, despite the considerable casualties it suffered, but it did rout; this was considered shameful by the Muslims and boosted the morale of the Crusaders. He and Saladin finally came to a settlement on 2 September 1192. The terms provided for the destruction of the City of Ascalon's fortifications, allowed Christian pilgrims and merchants access to Jerusalem, and initiated a three-year truce. Richard, being ill with arnaldia, left for England on 9 October 1192. Death: On 26 March 1199, Richard was hit in the shoulder by a crossbow bolt, and the wound turned out to be deadly. The boy who shot it was brought before him He expected to be executed, but as a final act of mercy Richard forgave him, saying "Live on, and by my bounty behold the light of day", before he ordered the boy to be freed and sent away with 100 shillings. Richard died on 6 April 1199 in the arms of his mother, and thus "ended his earthly day." I bet you liked it :)

Every time I play a horde I always expand east into Asia, maybe I should go west for a change. Switching to Catholic and becoming HRE emperor while fishing for personal unions would be a fun way to play a horde.

I remember playin the Great Horde, declaring tribal conquest against Muscovy while they were at war with Novgorod. Muscovy was allied with Ryazan, and I while my siege stack worked on Moscow, I parked my battle stack next to Ryazan, and kept stack wiping them, over-and-over, as they recruited little 1 stack reinforcements. Super cheese, but I got at least 80% war score with almost no casualites.

17:26 Unrest can be micromanaged with troops (up to -5 unrest if it's 20k troops iirc? or 10k?) In some cases it can be extremely helpful to just put one or more 5k stack on unrest provinces (like.. 3 provinces has 1.37 unrest, the rebels will be 12k in size, you lack manpower, they're 90% towards rebelling)

I did the Kaffa not too long ago, after your video - it was a full game 😅 Tbf to myself, I have *NEVER* seen the Ottomans so strong (and they're always strong) in my 3k hours of this game lol, it was ridiculous. Managed to win a war just before absolutism, they were 4 times stronger than 2nd strongest nation. Had to settle with a couple of trade ports and Cafa. Peace, released Crimea as subject, spent some mil power, voilá :) I can recommend trying again but remembering to switch to Tigray culture early (I forgot that) so you can form Aksum later. I stayed coptic but forgot to do the coptic achievement, and I forgot to move capital to Salish for the coffee one, but those can be done in combination with other countries. But I have never tried Aksum before. Being a colonizer/trader worked great, albeit a bit slow start (relatively to the Ottomans...). Having a fort on your side of the strait worked amazingly (in the Red Sea), they really wanted to go that way when they had all of Arabia. Managed to nick Oman and Mahra earlier too and some forts there helped distract, too. Manpower draining DOES work against them even when this powerful, but when left unchecked they can hire an endless amount of mercenaries. Get Zanzibar ASAP and max out trade power in Gulf of Aden (trade centers and even trade companies if you manage to get land in Arabia) Change home node to Zanzibar and transfer all your stuff there. Make sure to colonize South Africa ASAP too. After then it's GG, the East Indies are yours and you will have all the money you need to beat even an unchecked Ottoman Empire.

Yeeeeah, i also love the great horde/golden Horde. Great Horde Was the country i did the khaaaaaaaan achievement with. Just kow i am doing a campaign with one extra step. Started as crimea and about to form the golden Horde.

I would always recommend attacking Muscovy first when they attack Novgorod, it's an easily winnable war and it will help with embracing Feudalism. Once you do, the other hordes will be paper since you will always have tech advantage

No clue how you do this. Every time I've tried, following videos, guides, walkthroughs, I can never make progress because Sieging is to damn slow. Especially when trying to take capitals. I either run out of man power or they take my entire zone in the same time span. Over 1000 days for Crimea? No clue how you did it so fast. Even on my best playthroughs, by the time I get Nogai, Kazan, Ryazan, G-town and Circassia under my control, Ottomans have the majority of the southern part and are warning me against declaring war or Muscovoy is declaring on me and they just stomp me with their huge ass alliance.

Why would you keep all the forts including Crimea when you're playing as horde?

Don't worry too much about the Ottomans, put peace out the other war. It's early enough to destroy the Ottomans through attrition, as you're the perfect place to do it, lots of low dev low supply limit. Walk around him, get his forts. Then his armies, he'll have nowhere to retreat to. If it gets hairy. Otherwise I mean it's straightforward. He has scary military but he has nowhere near the bonuses you have (with cav; make sure to have a good shock general especially if he completed offensive as he'll have an extra pip) especially in the steppes. But yeah cut him off and destroy in detail. You have plenty of land and rebels, so you'll have plenty of time. His land is richer. Siege him then destroy his armies. But peace out that other war. There's no point to brute force that NOW. Do it later.

This is day 15 of asking you to do a mega campaign from ck3 to hoi4.

It is day 121 since I asked you to do the challenge with Croatia in VIC 3 but in one of the videos, a good person named Andraip (Thanks for all the help) said it has a few flaws so it's time to correct them. So when you start playing as Croatia you have 15 years to get your independence, after that you cannot ally, get in a defensive pact, and you cannot be under any kind of protection and you must rival these powers as soon as possible: Austria, Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, Ottomans, and all nations from the Italian boot. You also must embargo all those nations and cannot enter their custom union nor can they enter yours. You cannot be in an alliance with any of the top 10 nations, including a defensive pact custom union, or protectorate, but you can trade with them. AI must be put on the default settings in case it isn't. If you ally let's say Portugal, and later on they get into the top 10, you must break the alliance. You also must stay monarchy all the time. Form the Danubian state with Croatia following these rules. (FYI incase I didn't make it more specific, you cannot join anybody's custom union you must always at all times have your own market)
