Awesome video, thanks, I’m getting ready to repair my 1983 ATC 250R rear shock, and it has zero pressure in it, and I can hear the squishy noise from the rear shock. Thanks a bunch for sharing your knowledge

The only way to add oil is to open up the shock. To slow down the rebound of any shock there is a knob at the bottom of the shock (if you purchased the rebound option). To slow the rebound down you screw the knob clockwise looking from the bottom. To adjust the compression you do the same with the knob on the top of the shock, clockwise is slower. So in your case if they feel too stiff then you would want to turn the knob counter-clockwise. Your spring rate could be too stiff also though!

1st of all, great video, very informative. I suspect your response to my question (If I'm fortunate enough to receive one) will be in the negative, but I'm desperate so I'll ask anyway. I own a 1989 Nissan D-21 Hardbody 4x4. I bought it from a guy that was seriously into off road, and ran it over the Baha course 5 times. The front suspension has been radically modified. The original mounts and coil spring suspension were removed, and all custom mounting points were fabricated. It now has three shocks per side. Two gas/oil remote reservoir, and one shorter oil shock down lower. My problem is that the two reservoir shocks (Rancho 7230 -T8041) have finally failed. They are from the early 90s. Rush says that they no longer produce seals/rebuild kits for them (no real surprise there) To buy new shocks to replace these would cost more than the truck is worth, but it's an awesome truck, very clean, in good shape. I want to keep it on the road if I can, if it doesn't become cost prohibitive. Is there any chance that you might know of any after market rebuild kits or seals/O-rings that might work? I know it's a long shot, but thanks either way.

Finally an answer to my problem. Was taking apart my rear Showa shock for the first time and let the nitrogen out and was a few steps ahead. Then I watched another vid where the guy said to test the shock action rebound to see if the shock is good. I never thought it was going to be bad and not work so when I tried it and it didn’t work I was worried. I’m assuming it is because I had already let the nitrogen out though correct? Seemed low on oil too because not much came out when I got the other part off. Could be both? Is it possible to have a blown shock that can’t be repaired?

my sons xr 250 feels to have no dampening in the rear shock. you can just feel the spring and bounce it.....so im guessing that resembles the same problem in the latter part of this video....oil leaked out due to bad seal most likely correct? So on my 2003 Honda cr80rb I was out riding and towards the end of the ride the shocks got really really soft, so me being stupid I thought the valve stem was a bleeder valve but it felt like it was sucking in air once I had pushed the valve in it felt stiff again but the next time I took the bike out it felt like there was no dampening at all there is no negative or positive pressure in the nitrogen reservoir so I'm wondering if I have both a nitrogen and oil problem.
@maultechatv749
@maultechatv749 2 ай бұрын
The purpose of the nitrogen is to create a pressure on the oil in the shock body. With out this as the shock travels through its up and down motion it will create a air pocket around the piston and valving resulting in a loss of dampening. Most offroad motorcycles need to have 150-175psi of nitrogen in the nitrogen chamber. If it feels like a pogo stick you have air trapped in with the oil. It needs pulled apart bleed properly and refilled with proper amount of nitrogen. Thanks

most front shocks have an air bleeder, unlike rear shocks you don't want pressure in the forks (when there fully extended, make sure when you open the bleeder screws the bike is on a stand). it sounds like you have pressure build up if the dampening screws aren't doing anything. also this is a very old comment so I'm sure you have a solution by now lol.

Hi, i have an issue with my Fox RC3 motocross shock.. in the morning before i use the suspension and ride it , the free sag is within spec, and the top of the range is nice and plush, and then once i ride it and come back in 2 hours , look at my free sag, it has increased dramatically to an inch or 2. the plushness in that upper range is gone as well and it squats a lot lower and the shock is much stiffer.. then next morning when i go to check again , when it has sat for a while, THE RANGE IS RESTORED ! plushness is back haha what do you suppose is the problem, ? thanks for the video btw , i was thinking the nitrogen might be low and might be some bubbles in the oil. .?

Hey do you think you can't tell me what the problem is in my rear ATV shock?I seem to have oil leaking but the suspension works just fine and the oil is not coming from the engine.
@MaulTechATV
@MaulTechATV 9 жыл бұрын
If it is a bladder style shock then there is more oil in the shock than what is needed. If the shock is leaking then you will eventually loose enough oil and then it will feel springy. Remove the shock from the bike, remove the spring, turn it upside down in a vise and push the shaft into the shock. If you feel air in the shock then it is blown :)

Old comment, but its possible the air bleed screws were opened while the forks were compressed, so now when it tries to go past that point it is drawing a vacuum, otherwise the rebound damping is too far closed.
