"Being a parent doesn't mean you're always right and your child isn't always wrong"

When she gets home is not the problem. It isn't about 12 or 1am, and certainly not 12:30... It's the mindset that is the problem, she is a grown woman, obviously very reliable and responsible, so the parents need to realise that. I feel that they just want to have a baby forever and that they feel nostalgic and sorry that their kids are all grown up. That's normal parental behaviour and is totally ok, but they need to get over it and let her live her own life, otherwise she is just going to grow apart from them.

I've never in my life had a curfew... We had rule about this. My parents trust me that I won't do anything stupid and I trust them that they won't control me. Don't get me wrong. It's not like I could go out and come back 4am next day. I always told them in advance if I were ever late so they won't worry. And that was the best for all of us. Trust

I've been in her shoes... my dad would be chill since he knows all my friends and every time i'd ask to go out with them he would say yes but my mom would always so no and then he would change his answer too.... it was like all of elementary, middle, and high school! It wasn't until post graduating i put my foot down saying i wanted to go with them cause the rare occasions i would meet them they would always talk and laugh about things and gatherings that they had and i would feel so left out.... since i stood my ground i introduced my friends to my mom and since then every time i say i wanna go out with them she just asks for how long, with who, and where and then i'm allowed to go.... i understand the mother's concern but at the same time you can't stop your child from going out and experiencing life

At first, i also like Youngja. I understand why her parents did that and think it just them be worried about their daughter but the more i listen to the daughter, the more i feel sorry to her. Imagine sharing room with your parents for 24 years, they supposed to give the room to her not her oppa. They called her as baby but got treated unfair compared to his one year old brother. Despite all of it, the daughter still grown as a nice daughter. It it was me, i don't think i can be as obedient as her. P/S: The daughter is pretty and the whole family too tbh

This happend to me too. I'm now 21 years old and have been a good kid all my life, always listened to my parents and never did anything out of line. However, now as a 21 year old, I want to go out with my friends and enjoy new things- but they've grown accustomed to me being around them 24/7, if I don't notify them about where I am, I will have a long lecture, If I have plans and a family matter comes up, I should cancel my plans. I understand this girl too much, she deserves more than just a 1am curfew but to have more freedom to enjoy life for the first time!! A very frustrating concern indeed :(

My curfew is 9pm but I always stretch it until 10 or 11pm. They dont shout as much as they used to but every single time my mum has to nag me and blow up my phone with messages. I'm 22!!! It's not right for parents to control you and treat you like a child. It's mental abuse. This is also why I always miss out on having fun with friends. What gukjoo said at the end almost brought me to tears. I realised Im growing apart from my parents and even though we live in the same house, we hardly talk. They prohibit so many things for me that I cant even speak to my mum about anything.

Kinda same with my family. My parents want us, girls, to back at home by 7 PM. but when it comes to my brother, he can comes late by 12 AM. There's a lot family like that where parents are very lenient towards boys but not girls. "Girls need to do all the housework and treat man like a king" I REALLY HATE THIS since i'm living in this kind of family.

I can totally relate: mother being worried about you because you're a girl alone (which is not sexism btw), getting comments on spending too much money (also getting too many packages!), and questioning the 'utility' hobbies (as if hobbies should always be 'useful'). It makes you enjoy things less, because it gives you a feeling of guilt.

I'm 25 and about to get married next year and I still have curfew till 6pm. I need my parents permission whenever i want to go out with my friends or even date with my boyfriend. 3 hrs is the maximum hrs for our date. that's when i decided not to fgo out ever again. All I do now is go to work then go home.

She's a grown woman and doesn't need her parents to keep butting into her life when it is not needed. She shouldn't even need a curfew to begin with. She goes to work, travels an hour to get home, and by the time she wants to relax, it's late. Even on her days off, she needs to have peace in her mind that she can enjoy her time with her boyfriend, or friends, or even alone planning a day for herself. The parents need to change and hopefully when she gets married, they won't bother her afterwards.

I really feel sad about the gender discrimination because i am also suffering from that but for the curfew i can't relate to it because my mom always ask me to go outside and meet people instead of staying at home all the time but it is not my fault that i am unsociable and i always tell her that it is better than making her deal with problems that i will cause if i go outside fortunately that always ends this discussion.

I understand the parents and also the daughter. I've been through that too. Growing up from an asian fam, big but not too well off family. I mean, both of my sister and I are at our 20's already too but we still share a room at home. My mum and 3 siblings share a room and when my dad return home from work he often tried squeezing w/ them at that room or sleep on the living room (i honestly don't know how the 5 of them manage to squeeze in 1 room considering my teen siblings' big physique) anyway the point is, when I was younger I always also felt very confined. Especially towards my dad. He was a military man, and he rarely came home so we weren't really that close. But i felt suffocated around him, i often even described him as an overprotective dad to my friends bef (which i felt really guilty and very bad rn) and my mum is a very docile and soft woman. She can also be very guilible and panicky at hearing bad news. And she often gets easily anxious and over think things. So yea, as a typical teen in their puberty i had my rebelious phase. To the point where i almost hated and bore a grudge on them. I both hated and loved them. I also hated the fact that they treated me as a child and accused that fact as the reason why i wasn't as independent as the peers around my age (heck i couldn't even order my own food at the counter or at the restaurant until i was 19) i felt like i didn't have enough freedom to grow, to fail and learn from those mistakes on my own. HOWEVER! When i turned 20, those changed. Gradually, i got to better understand them, their reasons as parents and accept. I gradually started to adjust. But that didn't happen just bec. It all started when I was first diagnosed for depression and among other things (almost died twice or thrice for su!c*de attempt) so I had no choice but tl confont my parents about my situation and the things i've been bottling up. We had somewhat of an open forum. Talked calmly, tried to be open minded to each perspective on things, and tried to find a solution together. It was hard, for me and to my parents especially seeing their daughter like that. They felt like they failed as a parent and that also hurt me bec i also at the same time felt like a failure to them as a daughter for making THEM feel bad about themselves. In the end, we all discovered that engaging in small talks and simple conversations, major or not, no matter how busy we are is important. Both as a parent and child. We come from different generations so ofc our values and beliefs differ. Our decisions often contrast. And so talking is always better. Not fighting or anything, just plain simple and civil verbal communication about how we feel, our complaints anything. And here we are, closer than ever. I'm more able to joke w/ my dad, to cuddle up w/ my mum, or other simple sweet cringe things and talk openly with them. And to my parents, I felt like they started trusting me more. They started undertsanding and gradually seeing me not as a child in constant need of attention but as an adulting woman in need of a little guidance (I mean i still dont know a lot, I need them no matter my age i cant lose them never 😂) and I love them for that. I dont know about others abusing their trust but for me, the trust they gave me just 1. Let me understand the past concerns and over protectiveness they had in me before. 2. Let me accept their over protectiveness. 3. Made me willing to cater to their over protectiveness (its become a habit of mine to inform them about my wellbeing and location everytime i'm out even w/out them needing to remind me) and 4. It made me want to turn into a less impulsive and more trustworthy daughter. It made me want to prove them that me earning their trust is well appreciated and deserved. So i hope someday, teens or adults like her and parents like them realize a few little things and start adjusting for the better of each 😊

I never came home late unless I was with my parents . I do that not because she was strict or I have curfew but i did it out of respect for my parents.

Actually in my family, me (20 yrs) and my sisters (26 yrs) are not allowed to go out after 8 p.m. unless with our parents or brothers. While my brother during his 20's he must at home bfr 12 a.m. what i want to say is.. sometimes i do understand her concern but i totally agree with her mom since i get used to it and our culture that belief girls must be at home after dusk. Diffrent curfew, diffrent culture since in our culture there is no drinking culture after work unless it is a dinner.

When I’m going out and I’m staying out late and I know that I am I call my parents and tell them that I’m staying out late and they trust me if she’s never done anything for them not to trust her why are they so controlling? Trust is the key between parents and their children and my parents trust me to make the right decisions ,I hope her parents become like that to and treat them equally like my parents do+(don’t think I’m American I’m Arab but my parents are very flexible when it comes to rules)

Yeah, I'd have to move out. I wouldn't care if I lived in a 1 room studio or officetell. I'd have to go. Living like that is not healthy. When you live with folks or are surrounded by people who are constantly treating you as less than, deny you space to have an identity or as if you don't matter you will eventually develop some really unhealthy tendencies. Not to mention lack of confidence, codependency, inability to express oneself, unnaturally timid. Not to mention the inability to create strong bonds with other people and have healthy relationships and expectations. I moved out at 17. A person can only take so much and being over bearing has nothing to do with love. Everything to do with control, fear,manipulation and selfishness.
