Today we attempt to drive my new-to-me 2018 BMW i3 REx 1400 miles from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles, California. We encountered a winter storm in Flagstaff, AZ that killed our REx (gas) engine. We were left with over 100 miles of driving to the next charging station, with only 40 miles of range, and ended up on the side of the road in the snow / ice. This is my story.

Saving $60 every 1400 miles. Add that up over the lifetime of ownership (140K miles) and it's more like $6000.00 on gas alone. Also, oil changes once every 2 years vs every 5K miles, brakes that usually won't ever need replaced.

A car that is designed to have a backup plan, is one that also includes some very throughtful bicycle pedals/gears that are hinged to drop down from underneath the dashboard. Those pedals would seem to get some use, should they begin being built to have em, they could be useful to wind up a giant elasticband.

Just some minor advice from an EV driver: 1. If the station is billing by the minute instead of per kWh, don't charge to 99% unless you really need it. Your charge rate will be very high at the start of the charge session then will taper down drastically toward the end, especially above 90% or so(charge curve depends on the car.) Watch your kW charge rate throughout the charge session to see when it starts tapering down to a ridiculously slow speed, then unplug and leave so you charge more often, but at maximum speeds. 2. Swipe to charge in the app THEN plug in and it will work every time. Much quicker to start the charge that way because there's no waiting for prompts on the charge station.

Also, manually activate the Rex at 25% or more, especially when coming up to mountains and hilly terrain so you don't get so low you lose power. It keeps you high enough to avoid getting to that 1.5%, even if it dips to 20% or 15%. It will then go back up to the hold you set it to. It's under car settings in the menu.

I don't know about the engine in the i3 but my 335is does not like gas with ethanol in it. It had gummed up my injectors and was causing misfires during the cold Minnesota winters, they stayed as pending codes so I didn't get a check engine light though. I had my injectors replaced under warranty and have been running ethanol free premium for a few years now and haven't had any more issues. At least not with the fuel system, it's a BMW, there are plenty of other issues.

Welcome to Cali Randy. this posted on the 19th so you are probably back in OK by now. you are probably seeing the greasiest part of our state. I live in central Ca, Fresno to be exact. It is mostly farmland around here. I don't go to LA anymore. I just can't stand the freeway's down there. I use to go there in April every year for the all Ford meet at Knotts berry farm, but they moved where they originally had it and I havn't gone since. I am looking forward to the rest of the vids of this adventure. We have a Co-part here in Fresno where as a Dealer I use to go and bid on cars ( picked up a snazzy 66 Mustang once ) so if you are ever here you could go there and feel right at home.

Not to mention how clunky, loud, vibratey, and unclean they are. I don't have a car yet but I've got my license and I've got an e-bike, e-scooter, and electric ATV, so it's pretty obvious what I'll be getting and it won't be the rust on wheels my parents drive, that's for sure.

The secret is you have to code it that you can turn the range extender on at 75%....i always do that when i drive on the highway. It would take hours of driving at constant 90 plus miles an hour to drain the battery while using gas. But if you let the range extender come on at 6% you of course get his horrible results. In two years of owning my 2015 irex i never had his issues. After two hours on the highway with the rex on driving 80 i might fall from 75 to 70 after 2 hours of driving.....

We bought it knowing its limitations and that until we get more DC Fast chargers on I-95 we aren’t taking any long trips in it (because we will NOT be doing multiple long charging stops). So we’re keeping my Venza for trips (I work from home, no commute). And my 04 Wrangler for summer beach cruising. Am looking to add the I3 Rex to the stable in lieu of the Venza and just do trips in the Jeep. Chevy told us that unless you’re really uncomfortable, use the seat heaters to stay warm because they use less power than the car heater. We shall see!! Fascinating video.

According to fuel economy.gov, you will save $4,500 in five years compared to a car that gets 27 mpg. For less than $1,000 per YEAR, I don't think it is a bargain. I have a Ford C-max (I am super tall and it fits me) it gets 50 MPG and the gas engine runs it down the highway as fast and as far as I want to go. I rarely plug it in. I have driven LA to Georgia many times, about at the Texas/Louisiana line you go from a brown to a green view. To each his own glad you had fun on the trip.

Pro tip: 58mph will hold your state of charge when running the REX

Good to know! I’m thinking of the i3 Rex and this is the kind of tip that is good to have in the old knowledge bank.

@@m1cajah i3 are also running 2mph slower than what it says in the odometer so 58mph is actually 56mph. Only practical when driving behind semi Other tips: -get it used and save >60% -when buying used, make sure the climate control works (AC and Heat) because the battery uses it for thermal management -before buying, check out the hidden service menu to look into max kappa (battery capacity), this will tell you how much battery it has left -get one with ACC, which you can then unlock with a traffic jam assist (requires $400 module). great for speeds under 37mph. -when using ACC, the i3 locks on to the car in front of you. if the car changes lane, your car may follow so keep your hands on the wheel at all times! -unlock hold SOC so you can hold battery charge at 75% during long road trips -60ah versions, you can unlock the fuel tank capacity. 94ah or more, full tank capacity has already been unlocked

DC fast chargers are too heavy for the i3 plug. You need to lift up slightly while starting the charge and once it starts you can let it go. 2015 i3 owner.

Hard to justify the car. I'd rather get a Prius or corolla hybrid. I drove a corolla hybrid and was getting 56mpg on the highway at 68mph. Gas being at 2.39 it costs pretty much the same to run the hybrid and ev. Way I see it the ev would cost more since I'll have to be spending extra nights at a hotel since you can't just go non stop and motels ain't $5. And the rex isnt efficient, gets around 37-40mpg. I just love the look and aesthetic of the i3, one of the best looking post 90's BMW imo. Just wished it was a gas car or hybrid. Always wanted one.

If you want to regularly recharge at a station, don't buy electric. I have an electric car and have not used public charging yet. I would not recommend getting electric car if you want to do that. Occasionally on longer trips when needed its fine, but not the ideal situation. You charge at home/work and just drive.

Best i3 adventure I've seen! My 2017 i3 is a BEV and with a personal need of 75 miles of range a month at $.031 per mile cost on house L2 charge at 3.84kw, I wondered how I would ever use a REX. I have my answer. I wouldn't. Thanks for the vicarious excursion and I hope that the tumbleweed didn't do any damage. Great little car!

That car is designed as a City car, it was never designed to do long road trips. Electric cars generally don’t like highway driving, they can’t regenerate from braking.

Most gas powered cars can go twice as far on a tank of fuel and it only takes 5 minutes to fill up, I don't think electric cars should leave the city.

GREAT VIDEO love the story line and experiences that you share with everyone !! I am also an i3 owner as well and what is a really cool feature is “Hold State Of Charge” can’t tell you how many times i’ve used it for longer journey’s. The i3 is an awesome car and having the duel fuel option is one of the best features that BMW i3 offers. Thanks for taking the time to make this video man, really appreciate 👍😎
