Bravo, good to see you back and that frontal analysis of the Typhoon was very illuminating and rightly distracted me from my chores. I remember watching and photographing the EAP in flight and how just a few more feet in length and span made the Eurofighter a much better looking aircraft to my eye. Guess the wing stiffness gives fewer variables to the aerodynamic interaction between canard and delta.

The eurofighter has also a very good high speed manouverability to "escape" hostile missiles in a BVR fights. Missiles are really inefficient when it comes to turning, so they will lose a lot of speed if the targeted aircraft makes some manouvers. This shortens their effectiv range, so enemy aircrafts have to come closer to the eurofighter to shoot their missiles.

What a masterpiece of engineering is the Typhoon. The Eurofighter is the only 4.5 gen fighter with a real full CareFree handling, and this gives a real advantage in WVR. Moreover with an A/A load at sea level in ISA +20 cond. the Typhoon accelerates from 200 kts to mach 1 in less than 25 sec. It's not a secret that the Typhoon Tr-4 will be the best 4.5 gen aircraft ever produced. I've heard the tranche 4 will incorporate the Aerodynamic Modification Kit, an upgrade that will increase the maximum lift created by the wing by 25%, angle of attack values + 45% greater than on the standard aircraft, and roll rates up to 100% higher. Finger crossed!
@bagdaduk

I believe your talking about the LERX (Leading Edge Root Extentions) To my knowledge this kit is optional and not standard on the T4 Typhoons kind like the Comformal fuel tanks that were never used onthe T3's. But the. LERX might be good at helping with lower speed maneuverable. It has a negative effect at higher speeds if my memory serves me correctly.

An excellent video by any measure! Could you have a video on the tactical reasoning behind the choices about going stealth (even if means sacrificing aircraft performance like agility, range and weapon load) vs. using active EW while maximising other performance & tactical flexibility. For example, analyse thisp: If you go in with F-35 and the opponent has a good long wave radar system he will know you are there, but does not know exactly where. If you approach with Rafales or Gripens or Eurofighters using active EW the enemy will know you're there, just do not know exactly where. In this scenario the benefits of passive stealth design seem limited...

Isn't it obvious by looking at it? Especially after watching this video? Just look at the old, statically stable F15 vs the unstable su27. Look at an F16 vs an su27. Look at the eurofighter vs su27. The Su27 (& mig29) have large cropped delta wings (eurofighter) with blended leading edge root extensions (LERX) like an F16 (which also has cropped delta). The su27 has variable intakes underhung like the f16/eurofighter. Su27 has widely separated engines like the f14 tomcat, becoming a lifting body, aiding fuel efficiency and lowering wing loading.

I think a worthy mention for this video would have been the *McDonnell Douglas F-15 STOL/MTD* or *F-15 ACTIVE* - It was an experimental version of the F-15 that had canards. While it never went into production, A lot of the avionics used on it did eventually end up being rolled out to a lot of the F-15s that are flying today. Only one plane exists making it truly one of a kind. it should be on display down at Edwards air force base unless they have moved it elsewhere.

Reason canards were originally installed on the Flanker was actually a forced measure: when uprated radar was installed on Su-27M, it was fat and heavy, even more so than original which itself has exceeded projected maximum weight. That made Flankers instaneneous and sustained turn rates far more sluggish than originally planned, and new radar made it even worse. Hence the canards installation. Combined with original Flankers wing that had very basic control of leading edge flaps (fully retracted/fully deflected) the effect was very significant. For F-15 it was even more profound due to total lack of leading edge flaps. The cost of adding canards to traditional layout is extra weight, complexity, drag and thus fuel penalty, especially supersonic. When Russians made Su-35BM/S, they didn't just add power, but also they installed far lighter avionics, all-new wing with far superior FCS which finely controlled deployment and retraction of all flaps and aerodynamic controls. It also added the thrust vectoring which has far superior controlling effects irrespective of velocity. When Russians deleted the canards, they got the added benefits of reduced drag, lighter nose, less complicated control system that no longer had to actuate the canards. Flankers leading edge wing-root extensions are shaped about as good as one can get for its purposes of vortex generation. Canards have a known quirk: if the airflow on the canard surface stalls due to AOA, it causes the nose to dip, which in turn INCREASES the AOA of the actual canard surface. Not sure if those blades on the nose help with that issue. For supersonic cruise canard layout is a good thing though as it allows to combat the centre of lift shift when going supersonic

should be interesting to see what the Typhoon can do with the new EJ2x0 engine mod2 The EJ200 has a dry thrust of 60kN and the EJ2x0 mod 2 is more like 78,000kN in full reheat it's a way bigger difference. That will radically increase the power to weight of the Typhoon and I believe increase the service ceiling by 1500m or so. I know one has been tested with the mod 1 EJ 2x0 but no info has been released.

I know one is designed to crash into ships but the Typhoon is such a performer . I expected the Typhoon engines to be more powerful being it super cruises . Smart design .

Great video, commenting for the algorithm... Then got carried away... I think it is worth pointing out how aircraft designed with stealth in mind not only prefer not to have canards, but also see less benefit from them. Engine nozzles are hard to make stealthy against radar, and exhaust plumes are bright in IR, so one of the tricks that many aircraft can use is to have extensions along the sides past the engine nozzles*. This means that conventional elevators get more of a lever arm, making them more efficient. You can see this in the F22, a bit in the SU57, and heavily in the F35 and SU75. *Reduced side visibility has a major tactical impact because it is the aspect where doppler will also be zero. If you want to defeat a missile radar sensor that is the aspect you would chose, because in any other aspect even tiny returns can be detected. Western designers treat it as a special case with very high importance. Incidentally, this makes tail angle extremely important in terms of tactics. A vertical tail might seem like it is extremely bad from this point of view, because it will present a missile with a flat surface, but it isn't quite that simple. At low altitude an attacking missile will probably be looking down at the aircraft. A twin tail design will have one of the tails sloping away, so might actually be closer to perpendicular (Vertical twin tails makes the corner a retroreflector, so are not viable). Unless the tails are significantly tilted like the YF23, low altitude stealth in side aspect can actually be reduced by twin tails. The net effect is that twin tailed stealths want to stay high, single tailed aircraft stay low. Given this, the J20's decisions then start to make some more sense (though may still be wrong). If it is never expected to attempt to defeat a missile by notching at low altitude, it can entirely eschew the typical western emphasis on side visibility. As sensors get better I can see this being reasonable, because running away isn't vulnerable to improving sensors. My guess is that it's tactic is basically to delay early warning as long as possible, launch on the target, then get out of dodge relying on speed for defence. It's stealth is not regarded as a defensive tool.

Question: The first generation (trench ?) of Eurofighter had a smooth transition from the Cockpit to the back of the plane, while newer models almost have an F-16 style bubble canopy. Was that "just" done to improve rear visibility / does it create more vortexes over the back / both ?

There's really not much difference from configuration between something like an EF2000 and an F16. Both have up-loaded control surfaces in turning flight so trim drag is negligible. The EF has a lower wing loading and the F16 has a higher aspect ratio.

Not mentioned in the design of the Typhoon is doctrine it would be used which effected its design. Being used as a defensive interceptor/fighter which dictated less range and weight class compared to US aircraft. In regards to the Typhoon’s lack of stealth characteristics, the canard contributing to its higher RCS. US Studies have shown that once engaged in a dog fight the odds of victory become more even. American doctrine has highlighted stealth in the F22 & F35 in getting into missile range undetected and getting the first shot off. The F15 has a massive radar to detect adversaries at long range. The Typhoon looks have a relatively small radar.

In terms of RCS, how are canards worse than tailplanes (you need one or the other)? If the answer is that the main wing hides the tailplanes (elevators), then don't the canards hide part of the wing as well... I've never understood this part about canards being bad for RCS.

You are right! But part of radar returen is the deflection of rudders. In modern combat airplanes they compensate for the lack of stability all the time. Beside that weakness, SAAB have a patent on how to minimize the radar return from canards. Why the don't have applied it on Gripen E is unknown to me. I guess it's RCS lowering effect is too small compared with carried weapons.

Why not a twin canted tail derivative of the Typhoon or some other delta canard fighter? Would slightly improve stealth, increase lift, and improve roll authority. Slightly more weight but the extra lift would probably provide a net improvement in range as the F-15EX canted tail design option suggested. Could probably update the engine intakes and ducts at the same time to improve stealth and maintain weight balance by shifting overall engine system weight balance slightly forward.

my fluiddynamic professor was the leading aerodydnamic engineer for the Eurofighter and he once told us that the initial concept of the Eurofighter intended a double tail or v-tail (I'm not sure anymore which one) but it did interfere with the delta wing aerodynamics especially in high alpha domains so they scraped the concept.
