Outer Farne Island off Northumberland - much cheaper trip about £40, I spent a good three hours in the midst of numerous puffins, guillemot, shags and many more. Really good chance to test your zoom to its limits but also wide angle as so many birds in one shot. Iceland looks very remote and I guess the isolation has its own rewards. Enjoyed the video.

It’s easy to get “wildlife Photography Fever.” I’ve watched dozens of Puffin videos…but yours is really appealing because of your compositions, backgrounds, and the fact that you seemed to capture special moments when the birds are in just the right position! You should do more like this! Thanks for taking me along!

I’m so thrilled for you, Nigel. I often photograph wildlife. In Yellowstone near my Idaho home, it’s easy to capture wildlife almost tamed by tourists. But it’s the remote settings and the slow approach that allow an intimate experience with nature’s wild creatures. It’s not about the images. It’s about the connection of one being to another.

Just back from Skomer Island in Pembrokeshire...it was amazing. You can literally get close enough to the Puffins to touch them! (not that you should do that!)

Just 100km north of Bempton Cliffs are the Farne Islands, another 100 or so further north the Isle of May, both giving you ample opportunity to photograph Puffins. Or the Threshnish Isles (reachable from Ulva Ferry on Mull) or in Pembrokeshire there is another Puffin colony. No need to go to Iceland.

Love puffins. Every year we go to a cliff in Aberdeenshire to see them. Next time you want to photograph them, come to Isle of May, close to Edinburgh. You have to book very early tho as it's difficult to get a spot on the boat. Tickets go months before the first trip goes out. Another good spot, very close to Isle of May, is a Bass Rock. You can learn more about it in "Wild Isles" episode 1.

Beautiful images Nigel. Another incredible location that also has some of the most beautiful landscapes in Canada is the Island (province) of Newfoundland and for Puffins the Avalon Peninsula. Specific locations would be Bay Bulls, not far from St. John's the capital and Cape Saint Mary's Provincial Park. Heading over to the west side of the province is Gros Morne National Park which for a landscape photographer, will offer you endless opportunities for beautiful images...

Hello Nigel , glad you got to do what you have wanted to do with the puffin photos ! As many have already mentioned, there are a number of places you can get close up to puffins in the UK, Skomer island being the best I've visited. The main problem there is that there are so many nesting in burrows that you have to be SO CAREFUL where you walk in case you put your foot through one of them. It does get a bit crowded too, a problem you didn't seem to have at your location :)

Dyrhólaey for Puffins in Iceland Nigel, they are almost tame there, you can almost reach out and touch them (200mm is ample) Back in Iceland in 3 weeks time and can’t wait to get some more shots of them, so endearing and photogenic. Love your images of them but who doesn’t love a Puffin image, I was as excited as you when I had my first sighting and certainly ticked one off the “bucket list” 👍

Great work Nigel, but if you want to get close to puffins, go to the Treshnish Islands off the coast from Mull; I had a 70-200mm on my D810 and it was often too long. The birds are just not phased by humans. I even saw a razorbill pecking one guy's mobile phone as he was snapping them. There were bluebells out when we were there; puffins and bluebells? It doesn't get better than that.

Wow, superb images, thank you for sharing these, Nigel. There’s so many lovely photos, I find it difficult to choose only one favourite between them! I have been trying to capture an elusive kingfisher from a local quay, where the beautifully coloured bird sits on a low post below steps, when tide is right, to fish, but I’ve not been able to get that image yet. I've only seen Puffins in Faroe Islands in Mykines. It was amazing the Puffins were like 1-2 meters away from us. Their borrows were there, so they always came back, and there were like around 50 there all the time. I was able to do headshots of those small birds with a 350mm lens APS-C (525mm FF equivalent). It's super touristy, there were loads of tourists there, the birds there are somewhat used to humans, as they were ignoring us most of the time.
