The puffin is a beautiful bird to photograph. Kim, you have definitely captured some keepers. Wildlife photography is one of the hardest forms because you cannot be sure of what you will find. Lots of time and patience are always required. Knowledge of the wildlife is also very important. I've always admired those who are willing to get out before dawn and stay late into the evening to capture the best images.

Beautifully done! You are so lucky, I doubt that I will get to see puffins in my lifetime. Your storytelling and images are wonderful. I’m still new and learning nature photography, so thank you for including your exposure settings too. The way you compose is beautiful. It is pure joy to be alone with your subjects! Always go out! New to your channel, and so glad I found it. Your perspective on just going out, and also focusing on the positive over the negative, truly spoke to me today. Yesterday, I went out to a favorite location on a rainy, overcast day hoping that the birds would all come out once the rain stopped. I patiently waited in my car for the rain to end, then milled about for a couple hours. It was dead quiet. Nothing happening at all. Although always happy to be out in nature, I was being a little pessimistic about how the day was turning out. Instead of going home, I decided to move on to a new area for a bit. I was greeted with several migrating Palm Warblers flitting about in the newly blooming Forsythia plants. It was beautiful, and I went home with a few good shots. So you’re absolutely spot on with your advice. Thank you for the efforts you put into providing quality videos such as this one. New subscriber.

Hi. Just found you today. This particular video brought back so many happy memories of my trip to the Westfjords in Iceland early June last year. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the puffins on Latrabjarg for a good two or three hours. It will stay with me forever. I was there in the evening with spectacular light - the sun didn’t set until midnight. I had a photograph enlarged and printed of a couple puffins with unsharp grass in the foreground and blue sea in the background. The puffins looking at one another, totally smitten. They ave captured my heart!

Great video Kim, as a wildlife photographer I can tell you that nature doesn't always deliver. But, when it does, it's always spectacular. Nature is a fantastic healer too, when I'm on locations I often get information from other photographers but often take my own parth. Discovery can be extremely rewarding in itself and you can learn more by discovering things for yourself. Thank you for the great video and I'm glad things turned out fine for you.

A very motivational video. I have been a wildlife photographer for over 20 years and set my standards extremely high, so much so that I am mainly disappointed with most of my images. I have learnt in recent times to enjoy the journey rather than the destination. Best light, filling the frame, low ISO, tack sharp images etc. But in reality this doesn't often happen, so as you say, just go out and enjoy the experience. Thanks for a wonderful video.

Hi Kim. I'm glad you're enthusiasm for photography has returned.. unfortunately mine hasn't. I don't know. Maybe it's just because I'm going back to the same places time after time after time! Anyway, my mobility scooter is out of action until probably Thursday of next week, so for the time being, I'm grounded anyway, so maybe by the time I'm able to get out and about again, my enthusiasm will have also returned. Amazing video again! And with the background sound of all those seabirds gathering in springtime. In Norwegian puffins are called "sea parrots". Looking at these images the nickname is quite understandable! You have really managed to capture the characteristics of these lovely creatures. I think my favourite is the image at 10:35. Fun to see how the birds are interacting with eachother, maybe it's some kind of mating ritual?

I also meant to say about the ‘best’ times to go places etc - due to physical issues I have to go places when I’m able much as I would love to be out every day, so it’s always in the lap of the gods or hands of nature as to what will present itself for my outdoor adventures. So the ‘best’ times to go out for my abilities is when I can manage it, I’m sure it’ll be the same for others. Your video has helped me be more okay with that aspect of my photography. Thank you 🙏

All of your videos are great (this is one of the best), and your images are stunning. I noticed that most (all?) of the images in this video were shot at 400mm on that 100-400 zoom. Don't be afraid to throw a 1.4x or even a 2x converter on -- it'll extend your far reach while still giving you considerable room to pull back if you need to. And while it's true that either one will change that f/5.6 to an f/8, you'll find it's still very, very workable. Glad to see you shooting wildlife. Lots of fun that. Glad you didn't listen to that "expert." ;-). And your words about mentoring are spot on. Love the channel. Would love to make it to the UK someday . . .

As with all photography, there is going to be an element of luck involved. We go to a nature reserve in Essex quite a lot and usually see a Kestrel flying around, but had yet to get a decent photo of it. Last week I was walking back towards the visitor centre when I looked round to see it hovering behind me, about 50ft away. I managed a couple of shots before it dived on something then flew away. I got it head on and with the sun behind me, my favourite photo so far in 2023. The only time I have seen Puffins was on a boat trip around Ramsey Island in Wales.

Just seen a couple of your videos. Love what you do. One question. I noticed a lot of your photos were 5.6A and some 6.3. Most bird stuff I have seen on KZfaq (my main learning source x practice) suggests using 8. Any reason for using bigger apertures? Thanks

I did this to allow more light in so I could reduce my ISO and increase the shutter speed. I usually photograph really low F numbers for wildlife but I guess it depends how far away the subject is from your camera. If the birds were closer F8 might have been better.

Puffins aside - what amazing cliffs! Great scenery as a backdrop. Great images too, makes me want to take a trip up there.

They certainly are! I photographed them at sunrise in a recent video and they looked amazing in the purple light
