This was a very interesting and very likely effective fix. It's too bad that the gearbox internals failed the way they did. If I had that situation, I would probably use something I happen to have - "Polyvance Airless Plastic Welder". One time, I had a Briggs Max engine (top mounted plastic fuel tank), and the tank was leaking at the bottom. I tried fixing it by melting the plastic, but it did not work. The so-called plastic welder is like an adjustable temperature soldering gun with specialized tips, and rods of different types of plastic. If you get good at it, you can do decent repairs to various types of plastic (car bumper skins, also). It wouldn't be worth buying it just for this single repair, but if you come across broken plastic a lot, it's something to consider.

One thing to keep in consideration for the next time you have something similar to this, drill a larger hole through everything that's just big enough to clean everything up and get them true'd up, then buy a drill bit that's about a .002" oversized press fit or whatever the original oversized press fit is on the undamaged other side, cut the shank off of the bit to the right length and put a little bevel on both ends like the stock pins have. You can buy what's called "indexable" drill bits that come in .001" increments, cutting the shanks off and using them to repair/replace little pins that wind up lost and damaged like the one's that a float pivot on is a handy fix, especially if you have a local hardware store that has them in stock.

Would like to have the Lawn Boy as a permanent back-up. Good to know how the transmission goes together, and what the weak points are. Currently, it won't run when warmed up. Count to 500, have lunch, and it starts, and runs fine again. Maybe the coil. He's going to look at it before I make a decision. Any idea what vintage this mower is? Early 2000s? Any other recommendations on tools ...angled pliers....or split ring pliers......do you ever replace bolts or keep bolts on hand if they are too rusted?.....Bought a new drive gearbox if possible ....what do you consider too much time or cost....2 hours 1 hour ...35% pr 50% of average used value?
@HomeGaragechannel
@HomeGaragechannel 2 жыл бұрын
yes long angle pliers 45 degrees, Is what I use. Split ring pliers are only needed once in awhile but worth it. I only replace bolts if they are cross threaded or, have a rounded head. I don't have a problem using rusty bolts again. I never consider any time diagnosing or fixing, too much, whether it be 2 hours or 200 hours. you'll learn something from it. Cost wise, that's tough, I would say 45% the cost of a replacement, but it depends on your budget.

Removal of the gear is an easy fix, but easy fixes takes the fun away. In Australia to replace cost on a Victa is over $200, hence the bypass method. I enjoyed watching the repair, for now it’s holding, if it fails I’m sure the bypass method would be that perfect fix. What gear oil did you use for the gearbox? That oil was strange being so brown any thoughts? Debating Question Mower Oil vs Car engine oil even at the same number say 10-30?
@HomeGaragechannel
@HomeGaragechannel 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I don't know why the Oil was that color. As for the Oil Debate, that's a great video topic. The short answer is, nothing terrible will happen if you use car oil in a mower engine. As long as you change it every year, it should last, until something breaks on the engine. Using Oil that was meant for air cooled engines, is the best, when you really want your stuff to last. I would probably do this, if I mowed lawns for a living, whether as a side hustle, or as a full time job.

@@HomeGaragechannel I have had two things 3-D print made. One was a cup hold insert that is functional but flimsy and the other was battery holds for my kobalt/dewalt tools. The battery holds was very stout. So it may be the kind of plastic used? If it worked, you could start making a lot of hard to find pieces. Might make an interesting business venture as well.

I would have just taken the drive gears out and use it as a regular push mower

if you're still having problem with it, make some 3d printed gears and replace the old ones.

I'm surprised you did all that. Seems you like Lawn-Boys. It would've been easier to just pack with grease and move on.

@@HomeGaragechannel Well, a love/hate relationship with the past might be more accurate. Just disappointed to see you didn't melt the other pin-side in while it was apart. Now you get to make another future video when that side goes. :) You silly.

@@HomeGaragechannel Unfortunately, I can't seem to find where I saw this before. I distinctly remember the various details (mixed blue\gray sealant, the loose pin, using the soldering iron to fix the gear) from another one of your videos, but it could just be you had to fix another one the same way. Strange either way. Still a good video, cheers.

I know, I couldn't get away with any less. I didn't show it, but I had to seal it twice, because the fist time, it leaked when I put a "sufficient" amount around the edge. That's when I realized someone had already damaged it, by prying it open.
