That looks great. I took one of those to Madrid Spain from central UK once, and thought same as you when I first go on it - a bit small after my ST. But I absolutely fell in love with it. Those air cooled carby SS’s are fabulous bikes.

Looking bloody marvellous mate. Live and learn with homemade product. Nice to support local but sometimes it bites you in the ass. Glad it was recoverable. The finished product look good. One thing I did with my 2000 SS was to make a couple of brackets to lower the foot pegs 50mm and move them back 20mm. Meant my 67 year old carcass didn't suffer quite so much. Hasn't affected the ground clearance as far as I use it and means I can do 5-600k days and still walk afterwards.

As you can probably tell from my Avatar, I'm a bit partial to a 900ss! I owned one for about 10 years and still regret selling mine. What a wonderful example you have Andy! The SOUND, ahhh, takes me back. Mine was a 91 with white wheels/frame and red rear view mirrors. (No Oil temp gauge, I notice yours has) I can fully appreciate how much you wanted to get the bike out and have a run! Hope you have many happy trouble-free miles (km) on it. 😁

Remember, kids: tech and figures on a motorcycle are worth nothing if it doesn't "speak" to you. If a motorcycle ever had a soul, that Duc would be it. I sold mine 17 years ago after nearly 40.000 KMs of the sweetest (+trouble free) times on it, because of the "grass-is-greener-over-there" syndrome. I've had plenty others before and after it, including a very tricked-up Ducati 748 (w/ 916 engine) that, alas, was sold as well. It's the Supersport that I remember most fondly and the one I regret selling the most... what was I thinking!

Nice looking bike Andy. I do have to laugh that it looks like you put on the carbon fiber clutch cover. I just watched a video you made two years ago on this bike and one of things in that video you pointed out was the aluminum clutch cover because the carbon fiber cover let all the noise out. I must admit, the carbon fiber cover looks dapper.

How is the seating position, comfort wise, of the mono seat compared to the stock seat? I have a mono seat that I am planning on mounting to my 1996 900SS and have a corbin seat that is on there now. Mounting the mono seat looks like a trial and error type job, the factory mounting kit with three small brackets laminated to the inside looks fragile, there must be a better way.

Andy, I do follow you with your motorcycle/Ducati passion. I as well do love the air cooled/belted Ducati twins, enough grunt for regular road use (more than I dare using in fact). Own a very early M900 (‘93) and a yellow ‘94 900SL, both fantastic bikes that I’ve had for more than 25 yrs now. Have been tempted by the ST’s, pick of the bunch I think being the ST3s (although I prefer the looks of the original top half). Can’t however get myself to parting with either of my two current Ducs. What I am really jealous of though is that when you take yr bike for a spin, you find yourself in Australia with more room than you’d ever need to potter around, whereas I’m in the Netherlands which is pretty much the exact opposite 😊. Keep it up and enjoy!

I have a 2000 ST2. Do not discount the 2 valve. Easier to do the valves. Do the performance chip, have it tuned properly, get rid of the stock exhaust. Change front sprocket from 15 tooth to 14 tooth. You will have all the power you need. Fully loaded panniers with passenger you will not need to rev it all the way out. If you do you will be hitting 110 mph in no time. You will not need to go over 7-8k for more than enough passing speed. Most times no need to go over 5k for city, 7k for highway. I'm at 5k at 75 mph. Will pull from 2,500 to 3k, 3-4k is all that is needed for city. Mine runs a little rich below 4k. As I am in Arizona with 100-111 degree temps. Need to turn on fan manually, running rich at low rpm helps keep it cool when idling at traffic lights. Will load up a bit & get a bit of stumble 3-4k if running it there for a while. Cruise 4k or so keeps it cleared out. Even though it is nice to have that extra power of a ST3 or ST4. It really is not needed. If you set a ST2 up right.
@bramboer727

I follow you from a to z. In fact, as I mentioned already, my 2 older Ducs have ample power already and are less powerful than the st2’s. Jealous of you as well with Arizona as a playground😊.

@@bramboer727 Some great places to ride in Arizona all year around. Go to the Mountains in the summer, for cooler weather. Winter, stay in the lower desert areas, warm during daytime. I have had a lot of bikes over the years, been riding 54 years. I have had the fastest liter bikes, etc. I have always had smaller displacement bikes, as well, small nimble. Fun because you have to rev them right to get the performance out of them. Realistically, the average older Ducati has all the power you need on the street. The strong midrange without having to rev out. Provides great tractability & control. As much as I like the high horsepower liter bikes. Really cannot use 200 hp on the street. Unless you live somewhere you can actually rev it out. I have been fortunate to live in the US & Mexico. In days past you could run as fast as you wanted in Mexico. Not as doable nowadays, but still possible, better carry lots of cash though! My ST2 is as fast or faster than I want to go nowadays. With all the distracted & intoxicated cage drivers out there. Marijuana is legal, see stoned drivers every day, oblivious of their surroundings. If you want to be able to walk or be alive. Better to slow it down. Simply too dangerous. In Tucson, a motorcycle rider gets killed every 2-3 days. Half of them are due to the rider going too fast for traffic conditions. Crash would have been avoidable if they were not going so fast & beyond their skill level. I have been taken out 3 times by cars over the years. Last one about 13 years ago. Seems to be worse than it used to be. People run red lights & traffic signs all the time now. They simply do not want to be inconvenienced by stopping. Not enough cops to write tickets. They do not care if they kill someone. What ever is on their phone is more important than your or their life. Really sad circumstances.

I used Eastern Panel and Paint, but I don’t think that they would take it on if I’m honest. They are a high volume shop and I get the feeling that I just got the right guy on the right day. My advice would be to try a high end/bespoke place like Bocchino Motors on Albert Rd in Moonah. They did my Triumph Daytona years ago and are top shelf. I think they trade under a different name now, European something? But they’re still the best around Hobart.
