I finally got to ride my new custom bike-and I have a lot to say about it!

In the last episode we built up my custom titanium hardtail mountain bike, which was made according to an exhaustive list of specifications. At the end of the build I immediately got sick and could not ride, so in this video I actually take the bike out and give my thoughts on it.
I worked with Dave from Sage to design this bike. It was a lot of sending measurements back and forth, sending photos, pictures of tape measures, videos, etc. We went through several versions and worked through all the details, like ensuring the front tire would clear the downtube, and ensuring my seatpost would fully insert and end up at the perfect ride heigh when extended to 150mm.
It's easy to find a 27.5 bike that fits me, but not a 29er. In the realm of 29ers, the Sage Powerline was already pretty close to what I wanted, since it has a pretty short reach and a nimble geometry for covering ground-I just wanted it to be a little more aggressive, but not TOO aggressive to where it's just a plow. So we ended up with a little longer reach and chainstay than stock, also an increased wheelbase and shorter standover height. If it wasn't for Dave at Sage, I would have messed up the geometry pretty bad.

I really like your take on geometry. It feels like manufacturers (and many cycling journalists) are pushing everyone towards super-slack, super-long bikes that don't make sense for many riders, especially those of us on the East Coast.

I bought a gravel bike from Sage. We used dimensions that I got from a fitter. Dave was a blast to work with. When I got it all put together this summer I was blown away on how comfortable the bike felt, especially for long rides. I am now a total believer that getting a bike fit and getting a custom frame is the way to go, but wholly cow was that an expensive way to go. The bike fit was by far the cheapest part of the whole thing.

So, I am not changing my beliefs or how I greet someone. That's part of our society's problem, too many people are offended and of weak character. Just because someone is offended, doesn't make them right.

I'm a similar height to Seth. I recently went from a reach of 450mm down to 435mm and loved the change. I ride janky trails on the North Shore so I like slacker HTAs (I ride 63). But with the reduced reach, my bikes came to life. I like the stability of the slacker HTA combined with the mobility from the shorter reach. I also went from 165mm to 155mm cranks. LOVE LOVE LOVE the shorter cranks. I'm not sure why we've been so stuck on 170s for so long. I'm telling you, if you're in that 5'7/5'8 height range, and liked going to 165, don't shy away from trying 155! Less pedal strikes, easier on the knees on the climbs, and better foot position on the downs (for people in that height range). One formula to try, is take your inseam in mm (with bike shoes on) and multiple by 0.197 to get your crank length.

@@mrvwbug4423I calculated my RAD and found that my setup at the time was +6mm off my ideal. My stem stack height at the time was already too low and scary to ride steep descents in. Now I'm a whole +16mm off after adding a spacer under my stem and it turned me into a way more confident descender. RAD is good for nerding out on geometry, but it's definitely outdated on modern bikes as you say, and the average spender would be spending more time on math than actually riding.

Nice ride! Welcome to the Ti HT club! That inside feeling comes from a proper reach/HT&ST angle. I have switched to XL frames just to get the in bike feeling, and still have to put 65mm stems on them and I am only 6', its been driving me nuts for years. Frame designers don't get it, steep ST and slack HT means the cockpit shrinks even with a small increase in top tube. Custom bike would solve the bad geo combos that are all too common.

For me a custom bike would solve a whole other set of issues. I'm a mountain biker at heart, but since there are very few good challenging trails within reach for me, I mostly ride and enjoy paved paths now with some light unpaved sections, so I just want an all-road bike (between road and gravel) with MTB inspired characteristics. Basically this means I want a longer and slightly (not too much) slacker road bike for smoother cornering at speed, better control and better comfort. I think I should start saving up for a custom geo all-road bike..

I'm right there with you, it took AGES to find a bike that I felt comfortable on; I'm 6'3, but my legs are pretty long, so no matter how far up i oushed the seat, I was always feeling like my quads were working overtime, and at worst - it was like my knees were in my ears like I was some kind of clown on a small bike. After watching and enjoying your videos for the past few years i've learned how customization is a big part of riding, and back then I didn't even know that changing something as small the pedal arm length could make such a difference - but it changed my enjoyment massively! I can go for (no exaggeration) 3-4 times longer out on trails without all that extra stress being directed towards my knees and quads, I feel like I can take big strides when I'm building up speed, much more comfortably - THANK YOU

Nothing to do with geometry, I’m fortunate to be very medium in size and easy to fit, but one of my favorite bike moments was finding one that fit my aesthetic style. I like things that appear understated at first glance but have interesting, attention getting/conversation starting details and choices that separate them from the pack. I love design, I love quality through subtlety. So, when I found a certain bike that fit all of that, that I could truly say “If I designed a bike for myself, this is what I would have created”… it feels so great to have that connection. Happy you found that for yourself!

I feel you on the properly sized bike. I'm 6'6, and though i don't ride mountain bikes, I do ride road bikes. I got a vintage 10 speed that was abnormally big, and have been riding it every since.

Some of your videos have made me want to get into mountain biking, it looks fun and I already like to bike not only for fun, but as my form of transportation since I dont want a car. I've also realized that I want to go into bicycle mechanics as a career path with help from your videos. Keep up the good work with your videos and enjoy that awesome looking bike
