On today's episode of Library Macabre, I will be reviewing and reacting to my very first Darcy Coates book, The Whispering Dead! This will be released from Poisoned Pen Press (Source Books) on May 4, 2021. I can safely recommend this spooky novel if you like cozy horror, ghost stories, and haunted house books. For me, this is the big summer read of 2021 and the must-read book of the year. I cannot wait to read more from Darcy Coates, who is being called the rising queen of atmospheric horror!
But I'm going to need the help of you Darcy Coates fans out there... which one should I read next? The Haunting of Ashburn House, The Haunting of Rookward House, The House Next Door, or The Carrow Haunt? I can't decide.

Never apologize for enjoying 'formulaic' stories - I LOVE books and films that do the classic style well. I'll always choose an atmospheric haunted house story that doesn't stray far from the genre conventions over a needlessly convoluted narrative that tries too hard to reinvent the wheel!

Darcy Coates is great! I discovered her a few months ago and I've binged heaps of her books since. I have to agree about her dialogue, I've noticed that with all of her books that I've read so far - the conversations and interactions between characters are all very realistic and flow very well, especially compared to some other books I've read. She's also amazing at building up relationships between characters. My absolute favourite book by her is Hunted (wasn't a huge fan of this when it first started off, but then it was absolutely amazing - it has some fantastic characters too), and I really loved Dead Lake too. For cozy horror feels, I'd definitely recommend checking out The Carrow Haunt.

@@LibraryMacabre I'd love to see you vlog in a cemetery sometimes. Perhaps you've already done that and I missed it. There is a lovely historical cemetery in Philadelphia called Laurel Hill where my family plot is located. It's like a park with benches and trees and stunning statuary and mausoleums. There are some cool photos of it online. One of the creepiest things I remember about visiting that cemetery as a kid is seeing a child's grave with his toys perserved under glass.

I posted a reading Vlog about a month ago where I go to the cemetery in my town, but I definitely want to incorporate it more often! It’s a nice little cemetery. It also has one of those child grave with toys encased in glass. It’s sad, but a really nice monument.

Agree. That was a cool series. Can't say I liked the female lead but there were enough other likable female characters to make the series acceptable. I don't need to have a female character in every book I read, but when they are there, I prefer them to be strong, relatable, and not overly attached to a male character.

Great review. I have only read 1 Darcy Coates book “The Haunting of Blackwood House” and I would agree with you that her books are probably meant to be an easy cozy read. I was able to finish the book really quickly which is always nice. It’s funny you mentioned that there was an unlikeable character because my biggest complaint about the “Haunting of Blackwood House” is how unlikeable the main character was. Essentially I felt I couldn’t connect with any of the characters in the story but I definitely plan on reading more of her work and this one sounds like it might be a good time.

I agree. I love Darcy Coates's stories but some of the lead female characters are a bit annoying. So far, I like Kiera in the Whispering Dead. One book that really surprised me was Hunted, which really deviates from the cozy horror genre and actually has a relatable, likable (although flawed) female lead

Loved this review! Thank you for sharing this. I keep hearing people mention how they are disappointed by Darcy’s work and their main thing is “it didn’t scare me at all and a paranormal read should be scary”. Or something along that. Some of her books are genuinely scary. The Dark Winter series creeped me out, at least the first book. The other books in the series were less creepy but had a lot of tension, making them page turners. Many of her stories have a survivalist element, which adds a fear factor that is not there with a simple haunting. Try Hunted, Dead Lake, and the later books in the Dark Winter series. I also heard that her first book, Ghost Camera, was extremely scary and looking forward to reading it next. I'm impressed with Coates' range.

I love spooky novels so I think I'm in the right place. I came here because I became a Darcy Coates fan on Kindle. She has an incredible range and, in my opinion, some really great stories although some are only mediocre. She seems to do best when she combines creepy with survivalist elements. I just finished The Hunted, which was not at all what I expected from Coates but was actually pretty amazing. The Dark Winter series is good - it gets better as you move through the books (less creepy but more exciting). I get the sense Coates usually follows a formula she thinks her fans want, but occasionally breaks that formula to try something a little different.
