For example, I may say, “I know I am going to get an A on my Greek exam tomorrow.” Does that mean I have metaphysical certainty of this? No! I may in fact get a B or worse. Ever freeze up during an exam? What I mean and what the verb to know can be used to mean is that I have confident assurance of an A, because I have studied and know the material thoroughly. There are four problems with the defense of sola scriptura using 2 Timothy 3:16. First, it does not speak of the New Testament at all. (Matt. 18:15-17) According to Scripture, the Church is the final court of appeal for the people of God in matters of faith, morals, and discipline. It is telling that since the Reformation of almost 500 years ago-a Reformation claiming sola scriptura as its formal principle-there are countless Protestant denominations. In John 10:16, Jesus prophesied there would be “one flock, one shepherd.” Reliance on sola scriptura has not been effective in establishing doctrine or authority.

In the Old Testament it is clear God did take body and soul Enoch (Gn. 5:24) and Elijah (2 Kings 2:11). Would it be fitting for Jesus to take His mother also? If we read Rev 11:19 in continuation to Rev. 12 we read that John saw the Ark and after a big storm he sees A GREAT SIGN, the Woman, which we believe is Mary AND a symbol of Israel. Church Fathers have expressed that this Ark is the New Ark, which hold The Word (commandment tablets), the Bread from above (mana), The High Priest (Aaron’s rod) which is Christ! Who had Christ INSIDE? Mary!! But to convince a protestant of this interpretation only the Holy Spirit can. Remember we Catholics are not Scripture “alone”. We have Apostolic Tradition AND Magisterium also. God bless!
