Today I’ll be trying hair grease on my natural hair after 15 years of keeping it out of my hair regimen.
Blue Magic is one of those childhood staple products that I don’t think I could ever forget. I remember sitting between my mother’s legs to get my hair done while she greased my scalp. I remember there were two blue magic jars - the blue one and later on we switched to the white one. Well today I found the blue one and am trying it in a completely different way than I did growing up. Instead of applying it to my scalp, I’m applying it to my hair strands. My goal is to find out if grease can be used after all - not as a scalp coating, but as a sealant to lock moisture it.

It is so crazy for natural hair influencers can be so influential. I mean one person convinced someone grease was bad for you and they convinced someone else and that person convinced 10 other people and the cycle repeated until damn near everyone stopped using grease. If no one ever said that grease was bad. We would’ve never stopped using it

Yep. To be fair, petrolatum and petroleum ARE clogging to the pores. I personally don't want them on my scalp, but I think tweaking the application to the hair instead has a lot of benefits!
@TheVideti
@TheVideti 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah if a products doesn't work for one person they call it "crappy" and say it's bad for everyone and people jump on the band wagon without doing their own research. People were even saying it cloggs pores but I've seen many scientist say that petroleum/petrolatum molecules are too large to cloggs pores. They can lay on top and trap dirt and oils in the pores but they can't get inside to actually clog pores. Many of same people who say they don't use grease because it "clogs pores" are okay with using coconut oil and coconut oil has been proven to clog pores. 🤷🏽‍♀️
@flowergirle9250
@flowergirle9250 3 жыл бұрын
@planetvict0ria Yes I have seen where petroleum jelly was considered non pore clogging while coconut oil has moderate to high pore clogging potential. I know from personally experience that olive and coconut oil cause pore clogging on my face and dandruff on my scalp. Petroleum jelly never clogs my pores, but feel like it smothers my scalp and makes my hair greasy. so I don’t love it on my hair/scalp. I also didnt have huge success with LCO or LOC method on my hair. I prefer to go product free, no shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, oil, butter, cream, or nothing. I haven’t used any of the above in 18 months and my hair is surprisingly thriving on just sebum and water. Growing, staying moisturized, easy to manipulate, barely any splits. And the best part of all hair care easy and dirt cheap. I recently noticed even edges I didn’t know I was missing growing in, like my whole scalp regenerating from being able to breathe.

I'm a Chemist and trust me there is NOTHING wrong with mineral oil/petroleum. It's an excellent otc sealant. Only thing that's bad about it is it can cause irritation in SOME people. Same as any ingredient. For example, coconut oil is one of the best pentrating oils but, some people are allergic to that too. And, there is NOTHING wrong with sulfates. Sulfate free still strips the hell out of your skin and hair. What makes a shampoo not stripping is the humectants thats added to it. Just have to read rhe label and not focus on the "evil" sulfates. Sorry for the rant, but it's hard when people don't listen to scientist who actually make these products. Keep using your hair grease if it works for you ❤👍🏾. I have a sensitive scalp and can't use mineral oil or coconut oil or barely anything....lol. sigh!

Yes!! My husband is a chemist and he said the same thing about sulfate based shampoos and shampoos that use sodium hydroxide (creamed nature) to cleanse and soften hair. I alternate shea butter with Blue Magic when I twist up my hair and put it in a bun. I use Blue Magic to keep my ends from knotting and breaking.

Grease is a perfect science, it only makes sense why it works for our hair! From sealing in the moisture to giving it softness and shine and so many varieties, what's not to love? My hair has been thriving and growing so much since I went back into it in May of this year, I grease my scalp with BB's Pine Tar and seal my hair with Dax's greases (I interchanged between using their Green, Blue, Hemp, and Lanolin) and sometimes with BB's Hair Food grease. My nape used to be practically bald but now it's shoulder length when stretched, my hair overall is the longest I've ever had it since going natural (not counting when I wore locs)! If it works, it works, and grease definitely works!

Grease all the way! I started my natural hair journey in 2017 doing the oils, moisturizers bla bla bla... And my hair grew but the texture was always coarse. That's not what I remember grow up. Then one day being all out of oils I used the blue magic grease I bought over a year ago and BOOM in bounced the soft curly hair I remember... Soft, moisturised and juicy looking. Trust me...I'm never going back!

Despite what the KZfaq hair gurus teach, I couldn't help turning back to hair grease when I thought of how much it helped make my hair easier to manage as a child. My Mom kept my hair in twists or plaits (braids) for most of the time and always shampooed with a bar soap. I can't remember having any problems with dry or hard-to-detangle hair then. Since returning to natural, I mostly keep my hair in twists and plaits so I do use hair grease, Blue Magic or Softee, as a sealer but never on my scalp, and it still works just fine. I just make sure to use a sulfate shampoo to prevent buildup. BTW your hair looks great!

The world continues to go around. Grease will always find its way back to us. I'm a 70s brat and I allowed natural community to bamboozle me into thinking that what I grew up using in my hair was poison. I am so glad that I woke up out of that nightmare and went back to what works, working, and worked for me for the last 4 decades. Its worked for our ancestors and it will continue to work for the next generation if we allow it to. GREASE IS BAE❤️

I remember stop using it because of he NHC speaking against it, but it is how you use it and if it works for your hair then go ahead. I agree with the using sulfate to cleanse your hair after using the grease cause ggirrlll the sulfate is needed cause that grease is heavy! Also A little grease goes a long way. I went back to hair grease about as soon as I went natural. I read the blogs and watched the videos and was like hair grease never caused my mom any problems with growing our hair as a child so I I knew their info was false. My hair was the longest when my mother was braiding it and using blue magic.

I just started back using Hair grease. I stopped because it iched on my scalp but a youtuber uses Hair grease on her hair with some hair cream once a week and that babies hair grew down her back. I think her name is natural academia. So, I'm going back to grease but not using on my scalp and so far it's been good.

Grease is amazing. I went back to it about 2 years ago and I'm so glad I did. In a short period of time I had a totally different, healthier head of hair. Try the green one with Bergamot. Much more pleasant as far as the smell. The body and movement that you achieved is off the charts!

i went to the Dominican salon and got a blow out .. only thing she added was hair sheen. it was nice and straight but i got tired of my hair snapping every time i combed it.. I started to accept this condition and believed that fragility was my hair type til one night I got desperate picked up any oil/ grease/lotion i could find i'll say this...I DONT HAVE THAT PROBLEM NOMO. make sure you moisturize it with water or some type of hair dressing before you seal it with the grease.. honey then run the olive oil through it. old school goodie...

I've been back on grease (as a sealant) for about a year now. it's a definite YES!! Never giving it up again. I love blue magic and dax. I also use Palmer's olive oil formula (wal-mart). It's lighter / less greasy than blue magic and dax but still a great sealant.

The Sulfur 8 grease in the light blue container is the only one I use about twice a month for Seborrheic Dermatitis and it keeps my scalp calm. I totally understand why people go back to using hair grease. I stopped using it because my mom and aunties would put this on dry hair and tried to brush my hair and pull the life out of it but now that we know better I'm sure it can do wonders. I personally went back to using melted karite butter as a sealant and my hair feel sooo soft and moisturise for days, and it's easier to wash out.

I think, for protective styling, it makes sense. It seals in the moisture for a long time. For wearing the hair out, it’s too much build-up (also it’s a dust/lint magnet) and I’d hate to hate to use a sulfate shampoo at each wash day. I also fear that it would weigh down curls/kinks.
