Personally, I think the damage rating of the Master Sword should be dependent on maximum hearts in the same way that the demon king bow is dependent on hearts. Throughout the game you are shedding gloom through the shrines/orbs. If you read the goddess statue dialogue carefully this is what is happening. You are at full power from the last game but you are weakened from gloom until you get all your hearts and stamina upgrades. The power of the Master Sword should work the same way as an extension, like having a power equal to twice your maximum hearts...and more for when it glows against specific enemies. Durability is still an issue though and it's a shame they didn't fix that glaring issue from the last game.

Honestly, if the sword could start to regain durability over time when not being used, that alone would go along way to making it more usable without making it the only tool in the shed.

I had a very similar thought: 30 base damage plus 1 base damage for each heart container you have. This could also be extended to the recharge time being related to the number of stamina vessels you have. 15 minutes minus 1 minute for each stamina vessel. If you collect all of the shrines it would be base damage 65 with a 5 minute cooldown.

I can imagine this or something similar being part of the next Sequel Zelda Game. I imagine it like this: you have the Master Sword in the Beginning but with Ganondorf now having the Triforce of Power as well as his (damaged) Secret Stone he is only Killable with the Master Sword (which was a very big Flaw of the Ganondorf Fight since you can chease it with Multishot Bows and Anchient Arrows) - but Therefore him having much more HP and lile I said being immune to anything except the Master Sword which barely damages him. And in order to deal more damage to him you need to collect the Triforce of Courage by reuniting the Fragments of a Split Triforce Piece into one again similar to Wind Waker with the Triforce of Courage or the pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom in the First Zelda Game Before you complete this Quest Ganondorf is only Killable with the Master Sword but still very hard to kill, and the more Pieces of the Triforce of Courage Link collects the more power dwells within him and the more power he can transfer into the Master Sword when facing evil. And after collecting the Full Triforce of Courage Link basically can nullify some powers of Ganondorf such as for example Elemental Resistance or being immune to Arrow Shots and so on.

i love these comments, especially the heros health is tied to the swords power. if only ganon had times powers that would be cool, sadly the closest that was was when Veran in Ocarina of Time did it to resurect Ganon. ..... OMG they could resurect Ganon the same way Zelda gets resurected (Skyward Sword). glad to know Ganon isnt dead just yet. but yeah, if Ganon (not Veran) had time powers he could go back to Demise was around. They could collude to become more powerful the same way Rauru Sonia and Zelda worked together.

The Master Sword didn't empower itself by proximity to Ancient tech. It empowered itself by proximity to Ganon (and things connected to him like Malice). Granted, all of the Ancient tech was afflicted by Malice so it did activate near them, but not for the reason you thought.

If you can use a tree limb fused with an apple to damage Gannondorf then the entire bit at the beginning is pointless where the sword was able to afflict a cut on his face. When gannondorf grows in power reviving himself fully then it should only be the master sword that can damage him. As someone who just absolutely loves this incarnation of Princess Zelda, I have to agree. It was not enough that she imprisoned herself at 17 for 100 years to keep the Calamity from her people, but then she did it again. This time for thousands of years. All so she could deliver the repowered Master sword to Link at a specific point in time. She knew when that moment had passed, she would remain a dragon forever. Having the master sword lose its power at all seems just disrespectful.

perhaps the master sword has infinite durability, but then every 25 hits with it decreases it's base damage by 1. To balance this feature, the main damage resets every 20 minutes, the main weapon is 50 base dmg, x2 dmg to gloom based enemies and enemies near gloom, and also buffs special buffs on the master sword like bone attack up and attack up. Therefore, people see it as a superior weapon thati s quite op, though they don't use it too often, only when the you are is in dire need.

Mechanically I think unlimited durability and higher damage for the master sword but without being able to fuse anything to it would have worked well. Messing with scaling to use higher numbers is usually just asking for trouble. It can work but it doesn't seem worth it. It isn't logical that the mast sword is so weak, but it is intentional. If it isn't about gameplay alone, it could be the lore. Maybe something more fundamental was broken than the master sword itself...

I think that the sword should do damage based damage on your hearts and stamina. And eventually do 80 damage, without fuse. This would give another reason to complete all the shrines. This would also go for the durability.

Ur actually wrong abt the timeline of the events. Zelda did not go back 10,000 years. She went back atleast 50,000-70,000 years. We know this because of the existence of calamity ganon. It’s stated that the deku tree had watched over multiple calamities. And calamity ganon appears 10,000 years after its defeat. Meaning that the era of the founding of hyrule i.e the point Zelda traveled to, was far beyond 10,000 years.

I really wish the fuse mechanic was made better. I hate how you have it scroll through hundreds of items to find something to fuse to your arrow, and that you have to physically drop an item, go to the power selection wheel, face towards the item and fuse it. It makes things tedious and forces the player to spend unnecessary time in the menus. They could have brought back old-styled zelda controls with button mapping, but instead I have to press so many buttons at the same time in order to do simple actions.

It definitely needs SOMETHING to make it stand out and feel stronger. Tons of other weapons get a doubling effect (while flurry rushing, while wet, while at one heart, double fusion strength), so the master sword just doesn't feel that strong. Compared to BotW where it's full power glow happened a lot more often with boosted durability, it felt like a reasonably strong and very reliable weapon in Divine Beasts, Hyrule castle, and against guardians. In TotK it's full power is so rare.

Something of note, while all metal weapons suffered from decay (except bows and shields, for some reason) tools, like pitchforks and hoes were not affected by decay. I agree that the MS should have been made situationally more powerful than it was in BotW, i personally think that the base damage should have been made 40, and give the sword a buff or bonus damage against bosses and gloom ridden enemies. Giving the MS 2x Fusion power would just be stealing the identity of Gerudo weapons. The real trick should be that the MS should get infinite durability, but instead CONSUMES the durability of fusion materials with each attack. This way it remains indestructible, and will always do a respectable amount of damage, but won't really compete with the other highest tier damage weapons without a fusion itself, while burning through fusion materials to balance being indestructible. A "Secret" power/ability of the MS, or gimmick, could be something like a 25% increased fusion power, or a % chance for any attack to be a critical hit, or maybe the MS gains SUPER EFFECTIVE use of Light Dragon materials, allowing for 1/2 or full heart heals on attacks, or even healing gloom heart damage with attacks (singular). Stepping away from the MS, I really wish they allowed you to perform Fusions on bows. Imagine fusing a Ruby to a bow to give it permeant Fire damage or fusing a "Club" type material which gives your arrows a momentary stun or knockback effect.

the weapon fusion system creates a reliable source or consistently damaging weapons. That was why they chose to nerf base weapons. it makes sense. also, idea for the Master sword: how about having the damage decay over time the more you use it to a minimum damage of 10 or something? so it never breaks but still can't be used optimally all the time. and whenever anything fused to it breaks you still have the base sword to use. You could even refuel the sword with some kind of rare item like star fragments to make it recover faster. like the master cycle.

A bit of a tangent, but I feel like the Master Sword should be both harder to get and a requisite for the final boss. They go around telling you that the Master Sword is the only weapon capable of killing Ganondorf, yet you can ratio him with a 5x Lynel bow. At the same time, speaking of the Gloom mechanic, I was surprised that, after the whole Upheaval Weapons Decay and the scene where it shows the sages all decayed while fighting Ganondorf, the game didn't do something like Ganondorf erroding all your weapons at the beginning of the fight, requiring you to have the supposedly "gloom-impervious" Master Sword. I mean, what's the whole point of making the strengthening of the Master Sword a major plot point if it isn't actually required? (They do kinda give you the Sword at the end if you don't have it, but that just feels wrong)

A super easy fix is give it the Demon King Bow trait to the Master Sword, more hearts more base damage. You can keep the same requisites to unlock it but if you have like only 5 hearts only deals 5 damage, but if you get full hearts rises to 50 maybe. Second just the fuse part breaks not the sword giving it inifinite durability. Currently the master sword deals 30 damage and rises to 60 when it glows, with Demon King Bow trait at max hearts will deal 100 damage glowing and you can fuse something to give it 150 damage, an efective gloom destroyer.

I thought the weapons being destroyed by gloom at the start was pretty logical, personally. It wasn't just gloom existing, but gloom controlled by Ganondorf, pointedly destroying the weapons so that they couldn't be used to fight back against him. The depths are his area, so of course he wouldn't destroy the weapons in his domain; he'd want his army to be as strong as possible. I don't think it makes sense that bows/shields/farm equipment were left untouched, though, unless it was just Ganondorf being sadistic- can't fight back, but gotta let them eat so that they don't starve before he kills them, and lol, look at them trying to defend themselves with their shields. And maybe a bit controversial, but I also think that the Master Sword *should* be the best weapon in the game. It's literally called the Master Sword, made by a Goddess to fight evil, and then bathed in holy power for 10,000 years. The fact that several enemies have stronger weapons is kind of absurd, IMO. A possible balance would be having it similar to BOTW, with a medium-level base stat, but then tripling or more in the presence of gloom. That way it's strong against what it was made for, and the rest of the time, just a pretty decent blade. So I agree to some extent with your ideas, but think it should be taken further, I guess. I had more thoughts, but I am falling asleep right now, so hopefully this is comprehensible lmao.

They break in 1 hit, even when Lynel mounted you only get 1 strike in during the mounted cycle before they shatter leaving the weapon unfused for the rest of the mounted strikes. Gibdo Bones are intended as a powerful consumable for a arrow strike. Gloom's weakness isn't sunlight, gloom still persists in the sun with gloom hands all over hyrule. Rather, the weapons decayed due to the initial blast sent out by Ganondorf during the upheaval. The depths weapons remained untouched because they come from the spirits of fallen warriors who were not the target of Ganondorf's purge of weapons all over the surface. This is why weapons don't decay after the upheaval. If Ganondorf were to unleash more of his power near the end of the game, the new weapons would be affected too.

I honestly don't mind the Master Sword as is now but it definitely is a letdown that after all it's been through it's weaker than in BotW. But to be fair, 30 base damage on a weapon that never permanently breaks IS pretty strong. What I would do is to have only the attached material break and then you're left with a weakened base (maybe 10-20 damage) that can't be fused until it recharges. And while fighting gloom enemies either have the base power go up to 60 instead of 45 again, or better yet, increase the whole damage by x1.5 or even x2. I'd like the sword that seals the darkness to live up to the hype but not render every single other weapon obsolete. In Ocarina the Biggoron Sword was twice as strong at the cost of your shield, so it's nothing new for it to be outpaced in raw damage. I heard that after you use up the extra fuse durability on the MS it never comes back and that sounds like a massive oversight, they should fix that.
@ulyssesb1842

The Master Sword not gaining durability from fusing is actually a bug. You can notice that the very first time you pull the Master Sword, it has the full durability sparkle effect and it gains 25 extra durability when fused for a total of 65. Once it breaks and recharges it does not regain this sparkle and only gets its 40 base durability even when fused. Also, the Master Sword has 3 different states depending on your enemy: - Normally, it is not glowing and deals 30 damage. - Near gloom enemies it deals 45 damage and has its normal durability. It starts glowing but does not cause explosions of light when striking an enemy, instead cutting like a normal sword. - When fighting Phantom Ganons/Ganondorf it deals 60 damage and never loses durability. It does have the light explosion effect similar to BOTW's fully powered sword. Surprisingly it does not glow at all when fighting gloom hands, only once the phantom ganon emerges. Also, since it's unbreakable when fully powered, it allows for an exploit where you get the sword down to 1 durability beforehand, causing every hit to do double damage since the game thinks it's going to break on that hit. Doesn't work on Ganondorf though because the sword is recharged when you start the fight.

As other have already written, the master sword is the strongest against enemies with malice or miasma (gloom is a bad localisation, my opinion). In BotW the master sword is more durable the stronger it gets (be it malice enemies or through thr trial of the sword dlc). In TotK it doesn't get this increase in durability, however it is indestructible against Ganondorf and Phantom Ganon. So against Ganondorf it is technically better.

With DLC almost guaranteed, my suggestion is as follows. Give us a newly redone "Trial of the Sword" that by the end boosts the damage to the awakened 45. "But Joseph, that would still mean that its nerfed at base vs BOTW's stats." Yes and no. Seeing as how the total damage of all pristine weapons has been reduced by 33%, the true power of the base master sword scaled to these weapons is actually more than what it used it be. If you multiply all weapons to return them to the previous system, TOTK's Master Sword would inflict 45 at base and 70 when activated. Given a new Trial of the Sword, TOTK's ultimate Master Sword would stay activated at 70 and could even see a durability boost. I always thought it was strange that TOTK hid the Master Sword's output. Given the fact the game was rebalanced to make fusing a better game dynamic, it makes sense that the fact that dmg output was halved; I believe the Master Sword's output is hidden to prevent a knee jerk reaction from players who didn't realize this was the case.

the damage unchanging is perfectly fine. Damage numbers have new context in tears of the kingdom, as even pristine versions of weapons rarely exceed or reach 30 damage, while classic weapons all have higher damage than normal weapons and also rarely exceed or reach 30. this makes the mastersword's 30 very powerful in this new context. I feel like the only thing that needed to be changed was that they write into the story that the mastersword's new divine blade has rhe ability to repair itself within combat, and that it's weapon modifier effect was that it would lose no durability when hitting enemies with it (but would still use durability when hitting anythiny else. so like missing and hitting a rock, or hitting a shield, etc). there is already similar code in place for when hitting zonai devices, so i feel like this is easily achieveable.

I might of misunderstood, but did you state that weapons are weaker in totk compared to botw? because that is straight up not true. Gerudo, Zora, and Royal weapons can consistently do shitloads of damage with little to no draw backs, and royal guard weapons can shred lynels when used propoerly. Enemies DID get an hp buff, but it clearly wasn't enough since 99% of weapons still shred enemies like paper anyways.

I mean the initial attack damage without weapon modifiers is lower. With a substantial boost to enemy health, weapons base attack being equal to if not higher than botw, and with weapon modifiers, I think it would help a lot of issue with enemies and weapons making them feel FAR stronger. From my research, I couldn’t see any example of the usual enemies getting an hp boost besides red bokoblins. Like I said in the video, this fix is less mechanical and more psychological just by tweaking stats to feel like a machine

I kike the idea some people have said that the Master Sword should function like the Demon Kings Bow, gaining damage based on how many hearts you have, with a base damage of 30. As for durability, i think a good compromise would be that when facing Gloom based or Gloom infected enemies it doesnt lose durability. That would mean when fighting on the surface or on Sky Islands it would lose durability in use, but against Gloom infested foes in the Depths, temple bosses, and against Gloom Spawn and Phantom Ganon's it wouldn't lose any durability. Or you could flip that around and it would lose durability against Gloom foes. I would have it be the first way though since it doesnt break during the Ganondorf fight, and he's the source of the Gloom. Another idea for durability that i saw someone else mention is, if the damage were to be based on how many Heart Containers Link has, then maybe the Durability and Recharge could be tied to how many Stamina Vessels Link has, increasing its durability and reducing its recharge rate. Honestly, the Master Sword NEEDS something to make it more than just a moderately useful weapon, just something to give it that extra boost. One idea i had not inspired by someone elses was some sort of power up to the sword beam the Master Sword can project, like give us the ability to truly use a powerful Skyward Strike. Would be easy enough to implement, just hold the Master Sword in the throwing position for long enough and the sword could ping with Fi's sound indicating the attack is charged, and it could be a larger beam that summons a blue lightning bolt down on the enemy.

My idea would be to have infinite durability and good damage, like 50 base, doubled to 100 when fighting against more potent gloom, such as gloom spawn, Phantom Gannon, or enemies in the depths, and still possible to fuse things to, though the fusions break eventually. But, treat it like the Ancient Arrows in BoTW, where any enemy created by Gannondorf is completely erased by it, leaving no loot behind. It'd be a great weapon, but it'd slow other progression down if you rely on it too heavily.

My head cannon for why the enemies are weaker even though the weapons are decayed and Ganon is at his full power is that link just got more proficient with his arsenal throughout the events of BotW so now it doesn't matter if his weapons are weaker. He still will get the job done with them. I think the ability to fuse alone makes the master sword feel more powerful, but I do agree it should increase the durability too. I didn't even know it didn't, but it's wacky that it doesn't tbh. Also it should deal at least 60 at base because of the trial of the sword from botw. Idc if they lower the durability because of that, and you upgrade that with another similar trial dlc. Especially since I'd imagine fuses adding some more durability as well before that comes out. They'll probably just do another trail of the sword type dlc that increases its attack.

Master Sword should have infinite durability but can't be fused with anything. It only does 30 damage which is rather weak compared to weapons like Scimitar of the Seven/Lightscale Trident fused with silver lynel horns or molduga jaw with bone proficiency. It goes up to 60 only when fighting Gloom Hands or Ganondorf himself while all other weapons should lose durability much quicker or shatter instantly altogether. Endgame bosses the Master Sword should be king while everywhere else it should be the less optimal weapon compared to others. Master Sword losing energy is such a silly concept that on my next playthrough I'll just use an infinite durability mod.

It's been 10k years since the last Calamity, and the calamities have been going on for the last 100k years at least. Then _before_ that was the original Zelda Timeline(s) which never really committed to a sense of scale, except for like saying that TP was 100 years after OoT. Zelda could have had that sword stuck in her noggin for anywhere from 111,100 years (everything mentioned previously, plus 1k just for SS) to a million, or so. Um... so... yeah, it should probably ought to be a little more than 30 by now, or something...

My solution: Tie the Master Sword to Link's hearts, dealing 2 points of damage per heart and the light dragon part provides 4x more attack damage, so, maxed out stamina, having 37 hearts, would be a whopping 74 raw damage and a Light dragon horn, provides 20 x 4 80, so the master sword will have a 154 attack damage, also against gloom enemies have a 25% more damage, this is justified as a legendary weapon and the sacred power of the light dragon.

the problem with "fixing" the master sword is trying not to make it overpowered In botw people had the same problems with it Nintendo "fixed" it with the trial of the sword Having 197 durability(technically still 40 but hitting something will only take around 0.20) and 60 damage then People complained it was too overpowered Now in totk they "buffed" by simply being able to fuse things to it to make it more powerful without increasing durability Its Not basically useless like it was in botw with it now having a higher base damage than almost any other one handed weapon (almost because gloom sword has 41) Unlike botw where even royal weapons did more Its balanced

Currently the Master Sword is pretty good for *Weapon Conserving*, you can just kill a couple silver bokoblins and lose your sword and then its back in like 10 minutes, you didnt have to use ANY weapon durability. This makes the Master Sword unimportant, it effectively doesnt matter where you use it or what you use it on, it will always come back. I think making it weaker with use and charge back to full strength over time would work better. No more destroying the master sword just to get it to fully recharge minutes later either. Although I suppose lore wise it may not be perfect. Maybe the Master Sword could be the strongest base weapon in the game, but not be fuseable. But I dunno, im not a game designer.

The Master Sword isn’t supposed to be the strongest weapon in the game. Even in OOT, the Biggoron sword was stronger. They should have made greater efforts to make the Master Sword more interesting. Maybe certain enemies are basically unkillable without ‘sacred’ weapons. Maybe you could Fuse two or three items? And durability went down from there? Or maybe it starts with a high attack, and goes down the more you attack. Until it reaches 1, then it actually recharges/goes back up over 10 minutes. But never becomes unusable. Idk man.

Personally, I do think the Master Sword should be unbreakable and overpowered. Weapon durability is just a tacky crutch that the devs leaned on too heavily to force the players to experiment, instead of just trusting in the inheritant fun of trying different weapons/fuse combinations. Weapon durability makes more sense in the early game, but is just a nuisance in the mid to end game. At the very least, players should've been given a route to overcome weapon durability all together after having progressed in strength through the game. The master sword is exactly what could of filled that niche of end-game weapon. Instead they essentially just made it like any other weapon (the only major difference really being that it can recharge), which is just lame and completely antithetical to the Master Sword's identity.

I don't think it's fair to the Master sword for it to have to be balanced against other weapons in the game. It's an endgame weapon and is *supposed* to be more or less the best. If it had to have some balancing factors with its buffs, I'd make it so it does ~2x as much damage as the second strongest unfused weapon and has infinite durability, but it can't be fused with items. Fusing would still make certain weapons stronger than the master sword, potentially much stronger, but unlike them, you can use the Master Sword without worrying you're wasting it on too weak of enemies. I think it'd also be cool if it had a damage modifier against Ganondorf and other gloom enemies that made it deal among the highest damage possible on a weapon. Maybe it can even reduce or negate the adverse effects of being near/touching gloom when its being actively wielded, but doing so will drain its durability when doing so would otherwise be impossible. Then, having the 10 min penalty for depleting its durability would be a little more warranted, as you could say its recovering from fighting off gloom for an extending period of time. Maybe it slowly recovers that durability when not in use to prevent it dying the moment you pull it out despite not having been near gloom for several minutes? I feel like that's how it should've worked as a baseline in BotW/TotK, since there's no reason for it to be able to recharge when its about to fall apart but not when it's mostly fine.
