KleShreen, that's always been one of my pet-peeves with these sorts of re-configured apartments, calling an open plan kitchen, where a renter should put a table & chairs, a living room. Who would think it's such a good idea to put a sofa near a kitchen?! Cooking odors and grease would be absorbed into the sofa material and whatever else a person keeps in their living room, their TV, books etc.

There will always be one who is late with the rent, or utilities or any other bill. He will insist he doesn't use as much electricity and always deny that he stole your food from the fridge. He will say with a straight face "I'm sure I bought that yogurt." He'll let his girlfriend move in, insists since she sleeps in the same bed he shouldn't pay more, even though she occupies the bathroom most of the morning and, like him, eats your food. He'll lose his job, not pay his share and blame it on the economy/government/banks, etc. so it's not his fault and you have to make up the difference or get evicted. The landlord and the utility company demand the entire rent, not each person's share.

In the 70's my first apartment was $130 a month rent. Granted it was in an old frame house, second floor, but it was clean. Only the kitchen & bedroom (connected) shared heat from a wall mounted space heater. The small front bedroom and the living room & also the bathroom in the back of the apartment were freezing in the winters. Oh, and it was right next to the clattering el train. Such a quirky apartment. I have fond memories of that place. I wish young people could spread their wings independently with a first apartment---affordably---today as I did back then, without roommates. Having my own space was the whole point of moving out of my childhood home at age 20. What a great time the 70's were. P.S. I found out recently that that building has been fully rehabbed and rent for that 2 floor apartment is now around $1200. Times sure have changed.

@@thecatatemyhomework It doesn't matter if income has gone up, rents in NYC are outrageous. Even the outer boroughs are no longer doable for many people. Current NYC rents are not commensurate with most current salaries. *In the past, rent was actually one weeks salary.* I don't know many people who earn $3000-$6000 a week. Because rents were affordable in the past, few people needed roommates. Years ago, a friend was able to attend college, work part-time and rent an apartment, he did this without needing a roommate or getting financial help from his family! In fact, he's still in the same apartment.

@@thecatatemyhomework Well this was Chgo. not NYC, I should have mentioned that. Still $1200 is not dirt cheap anywhere. For the rents people pay in NYC, there are few amenities within the building or unit. And frankly the same here in Chgo's more high end neighborhoods. The landlord/bldg mgmt laughs at the chumps willing to pay sky high rents for location snobbery. But still have no parking, no laundry, not even a grocery store nearby, just trendy bars that come & go, high crime & rats! It's just foolish.

Nice apartments but I question this per person math ------what if you cannot find 4 compatible people to divide up the rent------what if one or two people can not pay the rent on some months-------what if one or two people move out and stick the others with the total figure. A few things are happening: families are leaving the city (NYC DOE has about 20,000 less students this year), families live in much smaller than you would expect apartments (Multiple kids to a room, putting up temp walls to create more rooms), they have government assistance or subsidized housing, and some people are in fact wealthy enough to be able to afford this. I work in Manhattan and if I wanted to live in a studio less than 350sq ft I could live three blocks away for $3000+ a month and my utilities probably wouldn’t be included. The one-bedroom unit doesn't impress me. As for the other one, a four-way sharing of a small apartment is risky, and though you may think the other three are friends, they might not be after a month or two. One or more may have outrageously bad habits, and you may end up being the only one who cleans the bathroom or washes the dishes (there's no dishwasher here). One or more may be a late-night freak, or plays loud rap constantly, or showers only once a month. One or more may always be short when the rent is due. If you can navigate those minefields, maybe this unit will work for you, but I'm not that much of a gambler. The price isn't bad if you are. One washing machine is inadequate for the whole building, and we don't know how long a hike it is to the subway.

The studio apt would be my choice! I live in a small studio now (250sqft). The bedroom would be perfect for a Murphy bed storage set. And some comfy chairs with a tv on a swivel wall mount. The kitchen add some stylish storage shelving surrounding the small 4 person dining table . Just remember when it comes to small spaces you go up utilizing wall space not go out which makes the space cramped with no flow. I find tiny living wonderful as it increases your creativity and limits material acquisition. Which I think saves you money on crap you don’t need and you can use it toward seeing the world around you.

These apartments are really nice. I like the finishes; the wood in the bathrooms is a nice touch. I'd move into that studio in a heartbeat, as that outdoor space is really great! The only problem is there's no storage space, but with enough cabinets you could make up for that. And it looks like each unit has its own water heater which is good. The four bedroom would be best split by two people; maybe two couples. Nice cheap rent! I'm guessing the area is not very desirable for those working in Manhattan

The whole thing depends upon whether you can deal with sharing a place. If two people shared the four bedroom apartment, it would be cheaper than the studio per person, but you'd still have space of your own. The studio (which was really more of a 1br), however, had that really nice outdoor space. From living in NYC, I learned that being on a lower floor is usually quieter than living on an upper floor because there are more buildings and stuff to block street noise.
