I Found Out Why My FIRST Harley-Davidson Was CHEAP

It was time to buy my first Harley-Davidson for our annual family motorcycle trip. The hunt was on for a V-ROD so I could enjoy the fastest, smoothest, and best looking Harley they ever made (until the Livewire of course). Of course tons of cheap V-RODs were for sale but this 2003 Electra-Glide Classic was the only thing close and it makes a bit more sense for a couple thousand mile road trip. So we picked it up well under the market price, and got to work cleaning it up... and that's when I found out the entire front fairing will need repainted.

Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make KZfaq videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?
Instagram: WatchJRGo
Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

A lot of people take the heel shifter off as they don't like it. The light on the front fender is stock. The oil cooler is an add on from harley. The 88 had about 65 HP. Kawasaki is the only mfgr I know of that got the heel shifter right. It is designed so that it can be adjusted to set level with the floorboard. It is so simple to slide the foot back and bump with the heel. No clumsy lifting of the foot and no clumsy shift lever in the %^#&ing way. As for stomping gears, racing or otherwise, it sounds like a good way to bend a shift fork.

I’ve always gotten rid of the heel shifter.. I like the extra floorboard room..be sure to lock tite the inside shifter arm… if the bolt vibrates out as you’re rolling down the road, the entire shifter shaft and shifters(toe/heel) will fall off and the first you know about it, you’re trying to down shift and you have no shifter…. Don’t ask how I know this..😖

You can most likely get that paint from PPG. I just had my 06 V-Rod resprayed in black denim and we went to them per HD for the base, matte clear, and reducers, activator, etc. If that stripe is under the clear, you should be able to sand away the clear, mask off the stripe, paint the base color, and then clear the panel. It's really awesome that he shares price info. For some reason in american culture people don't like to talk about prices they paid for things, or how much we get paid for work. Which is really dumb. We would actually be better off if nobody was afraid to talk about it. It would help each other out to learn if maybe we got a bad deal after hearing what everybody else got for deals. But if nobody talks about it you never know if the price you paid / got was bad. Honestly I think keeping prices secret really only helps the super rich because people who are getting paid badly and very little don't even know how bad they are getting ripped off.

The 100 anniv badge on the paint on the front fender is not stock...it's added bling like the sticker on the fairing you pulled off. Also, the rear air suspension is a standard suspension for all touring bikes. It has been like that for a while. My 1990 electra glide had it. Be careful adjusting it. To flush out old crap i usually gravity bleed (open bleed valves and keep topping up the master letting the weight fluid push out the old crap fluod) then Simple hold/open/release method method to make sure any air is cleared. If stubborn air persists reverse bleeding using a syringe of brake fluid on the bleed nipple to push up to the master cycle usually gets any left over air out.

I was by myself and had nobody to pump and release while I bled so I just opened it and pumped it and then went back and tightened it. I flushed all 4 brakes this way and it worked perfectly. You shouldn't have to pump and hold if the equipment is working properly, it should not suck any air in when you let off the brake right? When you let off the brake it just refills with extra from the reservoir, it doesn't suck air in from the brake.

Good looking Harley, you will have fun with a bagger. I have a 2020 HD Street Glide CVO and 2021 Pan America. With my Street Glide I took off the heal shifter as I hate that design on the Harley, it is too high to be comfortable to heal shift. I just use the foot shifter up and down, a lot more comfortable. They sell caps for that so it does not look goofy with out the heal lever on there. As for turn signals I think HD MoCo is the only ones that do the left and right controls, however the Pan American is normal on the left side for both. It gets rather confusion to remember using the turn signals between the two bikes, but I have got used to it. My BMW before the Pan Am was like all other bikes on the left side for both.

You need to clean the pistons on each front caliper. They will “stick” in their bore and cause that mushy brake lever feel. Each front brake has two pistons per side per caliper. They can be cleaned by removing and placing wood in place of the rotor and watch the pistons move. They’ll most likely be pretty gummed up since there is no real air flow to remove the junk. I do mine (2003 FLHTCI) twice a year. Use brake cleaner but be careful not to splash it everywhere. That year did indeed use DOT 5 Brake fluid and is non-corrosive.

I bought a set of LED Harley driving lights and retrofitted them into the foglight housings from my 95 Pontiac Trans Am since it uses the same 4.5 inch size lights. They are bright enough to use as headlights so in haven't used my popup headlights in about 4 years.

Good point, I was actually just going to leave the same comment. If the bike managed to make it to 69k miles on it though chances are the last owner addressed it at some point, My understanding is as long as it's been upgraded to a hydraulic tensioner the 88's were actually good motors. Have the same Rhineharts he has on my 96ci. too they are a riot:-)

My 83 Low Rider actually has turn signals and a flasher. You just have to hold it in and release when your done. Makes you a hand gymnast when clutching & braking. LOL

that electraglide has another 2 or 3 decades in it if you keep up with it. the best part of a harley is that there are so many aftermarket parts, and classic styling... you can keep them running forever

It is very hard to get a firm pedal/lever with DOT 5. I read that the fluid has micro bubbles in it. My 95, 98 and 01 FLHs had squishy barely adequate brakes. The weakness of the early 88 cu engines is that the timing chain tensioners fail at about 40,000 miles. Some people installed aftermarket gear drives after tensioner failure. The front fender light is stock and the turn signals should cancel.

Dot 5 is clear -w- a purple tint. When it gets dark, it's due for a fluid flush.(like you did). The stuff you had in there was overdue.

I have a friend that NEVER washes his Harley. One night during a camp out weekend, I agreed to wash and wax his bike for no cost. The next weekend he dropped off his bike. I really shined it up for him, it looked really nice. When I was cleaning it, I found a dead mouse in the saddlebag!

BMW has the same kind of turn signals, at least my 30 year old K75 does, PS, 1 finger braking is not recommended by MSF. At the end of the day you do you, but I always use 4 fingers on the brake...

The light on the front fender is definitely stock. At least a direct replacement. Which could explain the exposed wiring.

If you do "a couple thousand miles this weekend", you the man. That's 1000 miles per day Saturday and Sunday. Even if you rollout on Friday, take advantage of the long weekend and ride through Monday, that's still 500 PER DAY! That's a lot of seat time no matter your mode of transportation. That's 10 hours straight at 100 MPH.

Caliper pistons are dirty. Pull brakes out and clean up the piston area. That will fix the squishy brake lever. One of the 4 pistons is slightly hanging. Spray them down with brake cleaner. Nice bike.

That is low milage for an 18 year old bike. Good find. The squeak in your front brake lever is due to the plunger seal in there. It may cause fluid bypass.

If you unbolt the calipers then pump the brakes until the pads almost touch then spray them with brake clean to get rid of all the build up around the pistons the front brakes will work much better. It’s a common thing

Replace the front master cylinder, it is cheap insurance. The paint is available from ppg, I sprayed my friends 03 sidecar, its a match. Other places harley went cheap is the neck bearings grease, and fork oil. If you dont have the records for either I would do them sooner than later.

Several you think are aftermarket are stock. Air shocks and front fender trim with light are stock. Harley-Davidson switched to Brembo Brakes with DOT 4. The turn signals are Self Canceling. All Air/Oil cooled have oil cooler stock from 2010. 🏍💨🏍💨

Not to cause alarm, but you need to address a known problem with the 1999-2006 Twin Cam Harleys. From a reputable source: In severe cases, as the spring loaded cam chain follower fails it shreds plastic material that fouls the rotary gear oil pump cutting off oil flow to the engine that can cause sudden catastrophic engine failure and destruction. Also, metal to metal contact in these shoes produces metal filings to disperse into the oil prior to being filtered by the oil filter. If this happens be prepared (worst case) to buy a completely new motor as rebuilding the engine may not be feasible. This is not a likely situation, but a realistic possibility. Have your cam chain tensioners inspected. There have been failures with very low mileage bikes and others which have been driven more frequently. Basically, I'm suggesting you don't assume you have no reason to worry. Thankfully, there are a number of upgrade options to choose from.
