Hi Beautiful! It got real hot in studio today. I've seen fire haircutting become even more trendy lately and I needed to get to the bottom of this. Does it really work?

Yea, I was thinking about this when he said it, however, he is right that it doesn’t seem like something great healing. Unless you treat it regularly, cauterised wounds often become infected, partly since you are also biting healthy tissue. I think his question regarding whether fire seals kerotin is one I’m curious about.

@@sparklemonami506 because it is not a clear point of reference... the ancients describe the culture of the roman and greek civilization in the time period of 800 BC to 600 AC. That's 1400 years of history and two different cultures. If there is a clear tradition the fire hair cut people are referring to, they need to date it and give sources for their assumptions. Where exactly does it come from? Where and when did the technique first show up and how was this documented? Where's the proof? In general if there is a real tradition that gets used, it will be referenced properly. Good example would be the stick n' poke tattoos, because it can be dated back to ancient Egypt - they found tattoos like these on mummies for example (and it's ritual practises throughout Asia are also properly documented).

songbird377 sadly it doesn't seal the ends so much as burn away the split sections. Hair does melt when it burns (if you grab a single strand & hold a lighter to one end you'll see the hair immediately shrivel & retract into a blackened solid blob similar to when you burn plastic strands), which is where I think the idea of it sealing or melting split ends back together comes from - but there's no way to actually control that melting or even isolate it to just the split strand - they're just too small, too close together, & in terms of temp flames are the least controllable source of heat for such a purpose. While *theoretically* I can see melting a strand back together as being possible, it's not remotely feasible - to generate enough heat to do so would completely destroy the structure of the hair, so even if you successfully melted the strands back together you'd end up with something probably quite similar to if you bleached it a half dozen times in one afternoon - it'll be really dry, stiff, incredibly brittle & end up breaking off when you brushed it, or lay down, or if there's a strong wind - probably if you sneeze or just look at it too hard. What they have perfected, however, is marketing - it reminds me of how chlorophyll & apple cider vinegar became 'health food supplements' - absolutely no evidence for any of the beneficial claims, but they're not actively poison so the FDA etc. let's it through, & let's people get swindled. Similarly, there's no actual benefit to setting hair on fire - but it's flashy & impressive, & so long as they have safety equipment they're free to take people's money.

Actually, historian here: in ancient times, if a knife or blade was not available, burning your hair was a viable option. However, it was rarely to get a haircut, but rather to burn off parts of a beard in mourning or as an alternative for waxing. Yes, women sometimes burnt off their leg hair in ancient Egypt and ancient Greece...

But not like this farce. I only know of Turkish barbers that still do it, but not one of them uses any of these ridiculous methods. Also, in ancient (and not so ancient) times people gave themselves lead poisoning with makeup. Maybe we shouldn't copy their example.

As far as I’m aware, based on the archaeology, blades and tweezers were used in “beauty routines”. I’d love to read where you found this info about hair burning, please. doesn't seal the wound, just stops bleeding and keeps infections from getting too horrible. It cauterizes the wound, which is used to either destroy undesired growth, and kill bacteria. But now, research shows that burning a wound is actually more damaging. It increases risk of infection and causes tissue damage. Cautery is another act of burning, but with metal to produce blisters to stop bleeding, which again is not sealing.

I think it is the logic between grabbing a hot pan with your hand vs using a hot piece of metal over an open wound. One just causes damage while the other fixes damage. You're still burned. Yeah. So there is some damage, but it heals at the same time

As someone who often uses the term "the ancients", I can say that you are 100% right. I know nothing of history and usually just use it to shut someone up about various questionable activities Im partaking in at that moment. (Example: my boyfriend bitching at me for tanning naked on the balcony so I dont get tan lines. "The ancients used to live their entire lives naked." My boyfriend bitching at me for spending too much of his money on amazon cat toys. "The ancients used to worship cats and believed treating them with respect will bring great luck." Sometimes "the ancients" turn into "the old days" but it's all the same. I just realized how much I actually use these terms lol

Um, you don’t see the difference between devaporating hair shaft vs burning ends, so the would be less splits? Bad scissors can ruin your hair. The heat goes up, if the hair would be really heated up, it would catch fire. I used to burn my own hair for sciiiience, the “cut “ it does is very nice. Edit: but these folks put hair in actual fire, it is kind of dumb. The water doesn’t let hair evaporate. Imagine burning paper cup full of water. It won’t burn
