An old fella from my hometown was Mechanized Recon in WW2 and he would tell me about doing reconnaissance along the Rhine River. He said they would move into a position and the Germans would light it up from across the river with MG 42 fire. He said none of them had ever seen a gun fire so fast for so long. This guy was a superb shot too. I watched him level down on a coyote from well over two hundred and fifty yards away with iron sights and drop it one shot when he was 85 years old. No one else saw it until it fell and we were walking when he stopped and said "there that sucker is" and the he shot. That generation will truly be missed.

One time I was playing insurgency sandstorm and a squad of like 7-8 guys ran up while I had one of these and their legs disappeared as soon as they rounded the corner. It was so fast the others didn't even realize it they just kept coming. Getting shot at by one in game is scary so I can't even imagine what it must've been like to be on a boat meant to land on Normandy but you can't even get there cuz some Germans hopped up on meth absolutely mag dump on the boat. Like sardines in a can and anyone who survived that must've been a liability to their platoon. The sheer weight of their nut sacks surely held them back. During my military conscription, I was assigned the role of machine gunner, and the weapon I carried was a MG3. Almost identical to the MG42. The only difference being that the MG3 fires the NATO 7.62x51 round, and the MG42 used the 7.92x57 german Mauser round. So basically the same thing. It was heavy to carry around during training, but super fun to fire. Bushes, trees, wooden houses, cars.. no matter.. they turn in to fire wood in seconds.

My grandfather was one of his comrades, albeit a Ukrainian in German service (the Galician SS), though he never said anything about his war service (found out from family and the state archives in Ternopil, on coming to Ukraine myself, years after he died). And disassemled it in no time, so fast it was already done when we noticed. Then he said its a little bit different then what he knows from his time and put it together in no time under astonished looks. Last thing he said: "You dont forget this kind of stuff." This gun was decades ahead of its time. The fact it is unironically still used in some militarys around the world, speaks for itself. BTW, in the german military a time of about 4 seconds is recommended for the barrel change :D Ofcourse this is different in real warfare, but the barrel system is genius on this gun. You can do it from a prone position without risking exposing anything.

My grandfather loved it during WWII, but didn't have much use for it while flying the Bf109 and FW190. Both of his brothers were WWII "Electricians" in some special united and they used this gun extensively doing "electrical" work and believed it was the best tool in their "electrical" tool kit.

As my great grandfather's brother who served in the WW2 said MG42 was good but was too expensive on ammunition with lower damage per bullet and lower accuracy compared to the venerable M2 Browning. It lost to the M2 Browning when it came to the most important requirement of a machine gun during the war and that is brush-firing.

I was in the German army for 10 years from 1989 at the end of the 90s. I was stationed in Schwanewede with the "Panzergrenadiers". PzGren.Btl 323. I was a machine gunner MG3 there. Not far from us, about 5 miles away in the Lucius D Clay barracks, the Americans were stationed in Garlstedt near the city of Bremen. And whenever we were on the firing range and the US soldiers were there too and we were shooting with the machine gun, the US soldiers came onto our lane. And so it happened again and again that we let the US Army soldiers shoot with our machine guns. These are still fond memories today. Sorry for my bad english

when changing the barrel: 1. prepare a base beside your gun before starting the firefight. Piece of cloth, some stones, anything will do that keeps dirt from getting into the hot barrel - after all, you want to reuse it soon when it's cooled. Also have a handguard prepared as well. We had a special glove for it but I personally never used it - too much effort. Piece of cloth will do perfectly as long as you're fast and experienced. 2. hit hard against the interlock, so the barrel will already jump out a little bit, makes it easier to grab 3. pull it out and just let it fall onto the base, don't bother with repacking it until it has cooled down a bit 4. let your number two hand you the new barrel, that will work smoother than let him insert it, especially if you need to stay in cover. Best option is to already have it unpacked and at hand before the firefight. Loved the baby in my time in the german army over 30 years ago - well not the MG 42 of course but the MG 3. 3-4 seconds for a barrel change.

Sadly I've never fired one of those. But I did have the privilege of watching a local (I believe) retired sherrif who was an MG42 owner light up a range near Louisville KY with one - his was mounted on a quad pod and super stable. I had to pick my jaw up off the range floor when the casings stopped dropping. He totally covered about 250 yards of dirt with bullet impacts. Mad respect to our grandfathers and great grandfathers who went up against these magnificent weapons.

My grandfather served in WW2, he said that MG42 gunners were executed out of revenge if they were caught. So the MG operators were fighting for their lived due to this weapon. He also said that the British officers would have to scream at his peers cuz that sound made soldiers hesitate and freeze for a few seconds (as if they are trying to question their life choices). Soldiers didn't cower in fear of this gun, but there was definitely a sense of deep fear in their minds due to the violent nature of this weapon. This weapon didn't just kill a man, it tore him up. The brain seems to glitch in fear as it associates the sound with that type of violence.

about retaining a good sight picture, during training on the mg3 we were taught to really, really lean into the weapon. Basically brace your whole weight into the bipod and just hold the thing down tight. This helps for two reasons: First, it increases accuracy, and secondly, your shoulder will thank you.

A guy I know is a very skilled gunsmith/builder of combloc and other European weaponry. He’s spent the last year working on a semi-auto MG-34 build that was sent to him rife with problems. He never worked on one before, and there’s not much info out there on building them, so it’s been a learning process for him. Point of the story, these things were literal works of art. The way he described it to me was that, especially with the 34, each part was purposely made for one specific gun. Trying to work on them with different parts is extremely challenging, and is a testament to how much quality they were built with. A lot of hand labor went into these. I haven’t shot it (obviously it’s not mine nor his place to let me), but just getting to hold it and check it out was incredible. Hard to put into words to describe an MG34/42. It’s truly just a beast of a machine gun.
