Perfect example of what us old farts call a "power-ballad" - and like the best ones, it hits you right in the gut/heart, and that guitar solo just sends you over the edge!

Great analogy, John and Chris. Chris being my favorite bassist of all time because of his style being one, like MISA, to always be somewhere different on time and in tune but not out there where it makes no sense.

Few people, artists especially, can appreciate that sometimes LESS IS MORE. Band-Maid and Kanami (the lead guitarist and main composer) have an incredible sense of space in their compositions. Now that you've seen the mid-tempo side of Band-Maid it's time to delve into the more progressive and edgier side of their catalog. For a mind-fzck check out Giovanni. There's no official video video for it but I believe it is listed as a on their KZfaq channel. Other great choices: Secret My Lips Blooming Bubble Play

Band Maid's been in my KZfaq periphery for a while now so I figured I would go down this road with you. Sometimes it's more difficult for bands to bring it down a notch than it is to ramp it up. Band Maid made this transition seamless. To me that's a sign of talent and that's what Band Maid has going on here. Thanks Prymal for steering me in the right direction.

I've been a fan of this band for a year now. They're now my 2nd all time fav band just behind Led Zeppelin. They combine complex structure in a simplistic way. LZ is the only band that could play on their level imo. Yes I know there are other great bands, but BM has brought back the joy of the great music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. I never thought I'd hear original hard rock (combined with other genres) played at this level again. Suggestions- If you want to stay on the slower, melodic path then About Us, Smile or Catharsis would fit the bill. Otherwise, you might try Real Existence (featuring one of the best hard rock intros I've ever heard) , Onset (an instrumental masterpiece) or the double bill Manners (groovy jazz and rock) and Black Hole (insane speed rock). Stay with the live versions for all of these suggestions. None of these will disappoint. I've subscribed and look forward to your next BM reaction

This song is so beautifully paced even if, annoyingly, it's main guitar sound does remind me of the style of the Edge (though I'm not sure he's up to playing that sweet breakdown solo as well as Kanami). There are a few more sublime songs like this from Band-Maid and one of them, 'Wonderland', live in 2020, really showcases Saiki's vocals (she moves through three octaves without a hint of vibrato at one part) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rpqYq6-WrcjViqM.html . Their song for the fans, 'About Us', has incredible harmonies and the speech Saiki gave before they performed it only adds to the heartfelt lyrics and sentiments expressed about the 2 year hiatus we've all been on and how we will have live gigs again ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p8-Tmrly3am9hmw.html ) - a very special song in lots of ways and one that moves me every time. There is also a live acoustic duet with Kanami on acoustic guitar and vocal harmony and Saiki on vocals, which is the definition of sublime, especially as Kanami's voice, so rarely heard, is incredible against Saiki's. It's called 'Anemone' and is only visible on the Chinese site Bili Bili. Worth hunting down but it won't let me post the link here. Enjoying your reactions and great analysis.

Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Wonderland, Awkward, Start Over, Mirage, At the Drop of a Hat and Smile -- an unbelievable range of mid-tempo songs from the greatest hard rock band on the planet - Band-Maid. "Daydreaming," "YOLO," "Puzzle,” and a host of others are world-class masterpieces. Although I love Daydreaming just the way it is and believe it may be Band-Maid's best composed and overall accessible song, I've always wonder if it was sung in English, how deep in the international market Daydreaming would have traveled...? Oh well, I'll stop daydreaming now. Thx PrymalChaos, for another great Band-Maid reaction and for your insightful comments!

@@cius2112 Singing in a foreign language doesn't seem to faze the Boomers and Gen-X Band-Maid fans - the Maids biggest demographic. So maybe this acceptance will eventually trickle down to the Millenials and Gen-Z'ers. I think one problem the latter demo might have is the tempo and complexity of the Maids progy hard rock music. I don't know if they are just more into the laid-back popy stuff because it requires less brain work -- you know, so they can listen to the music while multitasking on their phones, etc. I find it difficult to listen to B-M as background music. It always grabs my full attention... and that may be the problem with younger people ;-)

Another on point reaction. I really enjoy your breakdowns. When you said Dillinger Escape Plan and challenging songs, I was like "lol, Band-Maid got that too". Of course, they do it the Band-Maid way 😁. Some suggestions: H-G-K: Chaotic and all over the place. Kanami took a couple if months to learn how to play the lead. Yes, she is a composer before a performer, and she wrote a song she initially could not play, just to grow as a guitar player. Black Hole: 220 bpm Giovanni: Very progressive and the song structure is a departure from their usual song structure.

They are already highly skilled as musicians and respect each other, but they always work hard without being conceited by it, do not compromise to provide better songs, and always think of delighting their fans. As a fan of both DEP and Band-maid, I'm glad you mentioned that we don't have to take sides or be the taste police. OTOH there is an element of primal chaos 🙂 that you have yet to experience with Band-Maid, and it's a side closer to DEP in fact. For example, HGK, Black Hole, or Giovanni from their latest album, Unseen World. Thanks!

Honestly I am so anti gatekeeping, and judging other people's passions. The day I realised I don't care what people think about my tastes was the day I started to experience joy all over the spectrum. That's why my channel as swung wildly from bands like Lorna Shore (extreme blackened Deathcore) all the way to Dimash and Lara Fabian and a cadre of extremely talented international (or non western) acts. At first I was a little worried that I may alienate some of my early subscribers when I diverted to look into some other areas, but then I realised that it's not my place to assume that they wouldn't be interested in some different flavours. It turns out, if people aren't interested in my reaction to Lara Fabian, they just won't watch it.. but on the other hand they may actually discover something new! (Or already be 100% familiar with Lara Fabian)

@@PrymalChaos I think the approach you're taking is the right one. However, in my observations, it only works when coming from someone with a muscian's credentials and the ability to articulate things that make a song work (which you have). What I hear from 95% of reactors is a lot of nonsense and I never subscribe. I'm also someone with extremely eclectic tastes, and Band-Maid hits the specific part of my brain that seeks songwriting that spans a lot of genre boundaries, often challenging but always well-crafted, and contained within a traditional rock framework.

I always look forward to your reactions as you’re extremely knowledgeable and speak about music in a way that elevates the song even more for me, so I’m really grateful for your videos they are a blast everytime ;) I think to contrast Daydreaming which for me makes me cry, Band Maid have a live of Manners and Black Hole which I think would give you an even deeper feel for their musical breadth. They are two very contrasting songs that they have posted live performances in one video on KZfaq. Basic summary is Manners is groovy hard rock and Black Hole is manic and their fastest song to date. Both of these songs are also off of their 2020 album Unseen World, so it gives you a good picture of where they are right now!

I appreciate your discussion of what is going on in the song and your take on it. 🤘😎🤘For a challenging song, I would (as others seem to have) suggest "BLACK-HOLE" or "Giovanni" off the "Unseen World" album (Their latest and best in my opinion). There is a two song live music video for "Manners" and "BLACK HOLE". "Manners" is my favorite bluesy "Classic" rock style song. "BLACK HOLE" is a fast sonic onslaught with great vocals. There is no music video for "Giovani" but it is in a play list for "Unseen World" on their official channel. Looking forward to more reactions.

Subscribed.... My Friend, imho, BAND MAID is The Total Band. Their diversity is out of this world and we don't need to talk about their skills as it is clear, really clear. In your ride you will find songs with enormous complexity in the concept, in the writing and in the performance and also you will find others with massive agressivity, etc. Let me comment that I am working in the world of art and fashion and there is a sentence that I like to use when we discuss about art or fashion and I use this sentence to end endless conversations: 'Is easy to be difficult but is more difficult to be easy'. You will understand my point as the fashion and art is full of divas and divos of smoke and trumpets. BAND MAID is always easy no matter if the concept of the song is extremelly simple or dificult. I truly admire them because they do it naturally and this only happens when you have talent and you understand that you are creating to offer something to others. I am a creator in both fields and BAND MAID put me emotional and happy because I can understand that they love the music as much as they love their crowd, their fans in they way they create. Inteligence and talent is the real harmony.

Yeah you're right about the kind of arrangements they do - Kanami (the lead guitarist) tends to play melodic stuff in the upper range a lot of the time, so you get that separation between the rhythm chords and the brighter lead and ornamentation on top. And she likes to use octave shapes a lot to add another "voice" in the mix - not complex stuff, more adding a strong melodic line to the chord progression. I feel like she does that on choruses a lot, gives it that anthemic feel That's what makes this band shine I think - they're not doing the most challenging or technical stuff (sometimes they are! but it's usually more of a texture than the focus of the arrangement) but they know how to craft a good rock song, and make it layered and interesting. There's always interesting stuff going on, and it just works for the song One cool thing I like about this one - after the intro, the rhythm drops out to just handclaps, and from there it's like a constant rhythmic buildup to the solo. Even the chorus still has that slow laid back feel like you said, the next verse has all that tom action and then the bass and guitars start playing 16th notes, it's like one long escalation. It's a pretty neat arrangement! Oh and since you mentioned Dillinger - there's a Japanese band called Broken By The Scream I keep seeing people mention, they had a newish one out that popped up on my feed so I gave them a listen. Wasn't expecting ~that~ combination of styles but the jazzy metal reminded me of DEP a little bit, it was pretty sweet!

This was a challenging composition for Kanami as lead singer Saiki acted like a producer and wanted a song that sounded like some mainstream western music at the time, but still sounded like Band-Maid. Kanami was asked to listen to some tropical house EDM like Kygo, and write a song with a bit of that feel. You can hear the chimes and ramp up in the first section that resembles that. She had never listened to that kind of music before so it took a bit of back and forth to get this song just how Saiki wanted it.

You know, now that you've mentioned The Edge, I can't stop hearing it when she's got the chorus delay on. Hahaha. You know, that re-listenability... finding something new every time you go back... the sonic density of their songs, even reliatively simple ones like this... makes it easy to find something you've missed in the mix. I go from listening to something like this to listening to something very similar from a western band, and wondering why all the instrumentals sound so sparse and so slow... even when they're at the same tempo! Excellent reaction! You're correct that Kanami puts the song first and her ego second when she composes her solos, however, when playing live she can cut loose when she wants to. She still doesn't drag it out, just enough to let you know she can play. You could try an instrumental like Onset (live) or check out one of their more blues-influenced songs like Manners (official music video) or Manners/BLACK HOLE (live) if you want an extra helping of bass or The Dragon Cries which is in English.

The thing I like about the solo in this song is that it serves as a bridge too. The feeling of it is just as the lyrics suggest, but after the solo the feel of the song is more toward being uplifting and positive.

I tell ya, those voices soared...higher and farther than anybody in a grey place dares to dream. Coming back to you, mate, as I only had time for a quick comment before leaving for work! Fleetwood Mac! Oh, well, that reminds me quite a few good songs. I am sure that Kanami does not know they composed Black Magic Woman before her idol, Carlos Santana came with his own version! Have you ever watched, seen Peter Green play with Carlos? I like your hard practical Aussie approach and it should please quite a few maidiacs! "Medium-paced"! You have to play cricket to understand that? LOL (from a Frenchman, you will never believe it! LOL again) Probably the next stage, before you go into complicated songs like Hibana or Coralium, it might be a good idea to proceed onto Onset (everybody's requesting it) for their classic instrumental played only on stage, never recorded for a study of their team work. Turn Me On is a classic live crowd pleaser, and Play (with the rhythmic guitar playing in between solo riffs at the beginning) is another crowd-rousing piece. Hard to decide where to go, but at least you will never be disappointed even if sometimes you need more than one listening to appreciate. This is mainly Kanami's fault who is a classical multi-instrumental educated lady who prepares a demo every time for Misa to add her bass and Akane her drum part. The latter two are also classical/jazz multi-instrumental educated ladies. I have always called their music (somebody is going to kill me! LOL) Symphonic Rock. Does it make sense? Not my fault! LOL Looking forward to your next reaction! Take good care of yourself (ves)! Best regards, Robert-Gilles (also called by his Ozzie mates Bilbo or Billby)

Akane's drumming here is over the top. How many drummers would write like this for this tune. MISA IS the "Slide Queen" perfect timing for each slide be it lead-in or lead-out, and like Akane's kick drum and Kanami's guitar solos, it's never over-done......just perfect timing every time. Good Stuff PC!

Prymal, you've added a word to my music-appreciation vocab that really fits here: Tasteful. With all the great stuff they've put out since this song, it remains one of my go-to's. Those beautiful bell-like notes from Kanami's PRS are every bit as goosebump-inducing live as in this excellent MV. I wear hi-fi earplugs at rock concerts, but I took em out for "Daydreaming" at the several shows I went to in 2019 cause I didn't want to miss out on any tiny bit.

What a great song. How crazy is it to take out your ear plugs mid-show and realising how insanely loud live music actually is. I wear in-ear monitors at band practice and every so often I pull them out, and I can barely be in the same room as the drummer!

perfect example of a darn near perfect old school power ballad. I hear very heavy influenses of U2 and Smashing Pumpkins(one of MISA's favorite groups) in this song. a song like this would have been a very big top 20 hit in the 90's, even here in the USA. but this is one of my top 3 songs by these ladies. just so much emotion in this song, you can't help it.

This song is about repressed feelings for someone you secretly love and you can just "daydream" about that love, because that person is already with someone, out of reach or league. The perfection of Kanami's solo is that it comes as a release of all pent up feelings like anyone with such a pressure will do at a given time. And, as you said, just enough to fit in with the rest of the song, no more, no less. Awesome composition.

I don't think I've ever heard the words to the last verse. Kanami's guitar has an effect on me. Like, suddenly I'm five years old. I'm holding Mommy's hand and looking up at her. Her hair is so dark and she is so pretty. There is a bright red balloon floating high overhead in the blue sky. We're at the state fair; it's a beautiful clear October morning and there are crowds of people all around. The smell of hot oil and spun sugar is in the air, and happy screams from the midway rides. Daddy is paying the man at the booth where he was throwing a ball at some wooden bottles. He knocked them all down and won a red balloon. He gave it to me and told me to be sure to hold it tight until he gets back, and he'll tie the string around my wrist. But I forgot and let go, and it's flying away. MOMMY! MY BALLOON! MY BALLOON IS FLYING AWAY! MOMMY! IT'S GONE AND IT WILL NEVER COME BACK! OH MOMMY! Oh, the song's over.

Some people desperately want their favorite band to be the greatest ever all time, as if that's something that can be quantified. It's totally fine for anyone to not like BAND-MAID. And more importantly, it's totally fine if a person hearing them for the first time doesn't lose their shit and scream how great they are. They ARE great, but we all have different tastes. There are death metal bands who play absolute top tier, state of the art death metal, but I'm not gonna like it, because I don't like death metal. So when you catch flack from the comments, just remember that the majority of your viewers are more like you (else they wouldn't be watching you) and roll with how you feel without feeling self-conscious. F the haters.

I mean honestly I could count the haters on one hand. The interesting thing though is how easy it is to fixate on those ones. I have to train myself to ignore them. I can't imagine what it must be like to be a well known person going through a shit-storm of hate.

Sorry, mate, but I have this tendency to come back again to some reactions (not many, mind you!) simply because it is fun to add a little every time. Truth be told I might be repeating some other comments, but bear with this old French geezer who tends to find himself too often on a sticky wicket! Kanami reportedly said it proved the most difficult song/music to compose, but its has become a classic although going back 4 years in the past does seem quite a bit when you realize the immense output of those last 4 years. One thing I noticed about Akane: she is usually very tight in the pocket, but this is probably the first time I noticed her elbows literally flying! Saiki and Miku are presently recognized as a vocal duo (as opposed to two vocalists) and this particular song was arguably the first to establish the notion. As for Kanami, you have only witnessed her quiet side, even during these solos (always too short, but so perfect). She reveals her true self in front of small crowds in cramped clubs where she literally let everything fly! Just check the fan cam (Vladimir Chupin) at Hamburg when playing Moratorium! As for Misa, if she hadn't been a lady, she would have probably become one of the very best session musicians in Japan. But we ironically have to thank the male-dominated Japanese music industry which forced her to "content herself" with being a band musician! What a sweet revenge! On another note, since you like Gacharic Spin, here is another band (trio) of two boys and one girl, Asterism. Start with Rising Moon (before many more): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f8yogMxhp96YqGQ.html I will not say any more about them for the moment but they are becoming big! Do have some fun and take good care of yourself (ves)! Best regards, Robert-Gilles
