I'm really glad this is one of the rare rules stories where the protagonist actually does listen to the rules and doesn't immediately think they know better and scoff at them. It's fine to write rules stories where the protagonist immediately breaks/forgets them and that's what causes their problems. But it's harder and scarier when a character follows the rules and still ends up in trouble.
@alyasfukename3355

The rules also didn't feel so contrived and intentionally mysterious. They made sense for the kind of work besides the one weird one
@FiresCollide
@FiresCollide 6 ай бұрын
@@alyasfukename3355 Agreed. I think that's sort of a lazy form of writing, to make the rules intentionally weird and then the rule-giver expects the protagonist to not have ANY questions or push back. That has never ever worked in the history of human curiosity.
@alyasfukename3355
@alyasfukename3355 6 ай бұрын
@@FiresCollide I was honestly thinking it's the same fault of the "ritual pasta" trend before this. At least the rituals had the easy explanation of trying to achieve something unnatural. The format is there and it's not awful but it can easily become lazy and overwritten. With the ritual stories they seemed to stop having a truly desirable goal and instead became about the steps. With these ones they became less about the characters and the reason they're forced to follow the rules and more about how weird the rules are. If people are wanting to write something bizarre and surreal they're better off going for the "tales from the gas station" or "uncle Henry's farm" approach. But that is a story structure that requires some real creativity to keep interesting.

I've heard this dude on a couple other channels. Some of his speech patterns are almost comically over-done, but that's just it: He actually *feels* his characters he's portraying. Otis actually makes his entire story feel cozy. And then we've got other storytellers, where literally every character is the sassiest valley-girl you've ever heard on the internet. I'll take this dude any day. 10/10.

I worked for a small village that had its own sewer treatment facility but it was only rated for about 2500 people and every fourth of July our little village would see at least 10,000 people, which would of course overload our sewer system. If the material was of the wrong consistency it would clog up the intake valve, if this happened you would have to put on "the suit" a sort of spacesuit/deep sea divers suit, then you would have to climb to the bottom of the intake storage tank and manually clear the intake valve, that is right you would climb down or let yourself sink through 50 feet of human waste and if you let yourself sink you might hit different consistencies and fall at a different rate which is kind of gross because you know whats going on outside the suit. Thankfully I only had to do that job twice but it was enough.

My dad worked as a sewer chargehand before I was born, and for a couple of years afterwards. He witnessed some horrific things down there. Things he hates talking about because he can't believe himans could be so cruel (ironic coming from a man who was an abusive, violent, alcoholic. He's not abusive any more, but still an alcoholic). Some of the things he did tell me were terrifying. Not just "fatbergs" of waste, lard, and stuff that shouldn't be flushed, but kittens and puppies which had been drowned by flushing them immediately after birth. Half-eaten body parts rats had pulled into nests in the sewers, and a couple of full term babies who'd been stillborn. He witnessed at least one co-worker (that I know of) drown in waste after an area of sub-flooring caved in. I later went to school with the victim's son, who decided to become a civil engineer, specialising in sewers/drainage.
