Between all the cigarettes and whatnot, nobody could taste a thing in the 70s. I think that explains a lot of amazing flavor combinations from the 60s to the 80s.

I lived through the '70s. A lot of the new foods brought out then, were full of chemicals, and tasted like shite. All the recipes shown, would have been utterly noxious. Luckily, both my parents were superb cooks, who always tried to make meals with proper, recognisable ingredients, and not cover them with greasy, chemical excrement. I like aspic, but where it's meant to be, like in pork pies, or on the edge of paté. Not full of poxy spaghetti hoops. I'm very surprised that the big US food companies didn't team up with Big Tobacco, and give us a lovely Philip Morris cigarette salad, made with aspic, Miracle Whip, and cigarette ends.

@@brianartillery I technically lived through the last half of the 70s, though I don’t remember anything before 1980 or so. I was….not as fortunate as you in the food department. My dad was okay, but I only ate there every other weekend.

That's why i always thought our english food was so bland, since the tax on cigarrettes was sooo high compare to the rest of the world, that more people don't smoke, and you can actually taste potatoes. a thoroughly flawed theory but i enjoy it.

Strictly speaking, Miracle Whip isn’t mayonnaise but a salad dressing and mayonnaise substitute with sugar (nowadays high-fructose corn syrup) in it. It has less oil than proper mayonnaise and the biggest ingredient is water. Less caloric than real mayonnaise. I find it truly horrible.

Yes, it was invented during the Depression to be a cheap alternative to mayonnaise. I never could stand it, either.

I feel that it was a touch unfair for Stuart to pick these "recipes" and then not be subjected to them himself. There was a show that aired on Canadian TV called "Back in Time For the Holidays" where a family signed up to have to spend a week living in the 40's - 80's including having their house remodeled for each era, wearing period appropriate clothing, doing popular activities of the time and most importantly eating recipes from those eras. During one season of the show that banana\ham\hollandaise monstrosity was on the menu and the family's reaction was very similar to yours.

This was so funny. I love thoseweird old american recipes, especialy how most tv portrays american food to be jusr burgers, pizza hotdogs and chinese food in funt cardboard happy meal boxes. This "aspic" stuff with the food suspended inti, it makes it look like someone freeze framed vomit mid-air

Bloody hell, it's the complete aspic package! Seeing these recipe cards again makes me really glad I wasn't alive in the 70s. I do get why some of these are WW recipes though, just looking at the pictures makes you want to never eat again. I love Dax's "WHAT THE SHIT" facial expression while you made the baked beans, she was NOT happy. 😀 At least the boys enjoyed it so it wasn't all for nothing (look at the pasta twins, so smol!). Thank you for making aspic so entertaining, I had a blast! 😀

I was alive in the 70s. Thankfully my parents were mostly sane so the only thing they ever put ina jelly mould was actual normal jelly of the "and ice cream" variety

The sad part that some of these recipes actually don't sound that bad until the horrifying swerve into "and then add a jar of miracle whip/brick of cream cheese". The cherry and banana candles sound like they might be pretty good with, say, whipped cream or chocolate, NOT FUCKING MIRACLE WHIP.

Astoundingly I have had something 90% akin to the dish at 20:00 and while I can respect the confusion from people unaccustomed to yams, sweet potato or yam casserole is often the best dessert at Thanksgiving, even beyond pumpkin pie, though I only ever experience it if going to a restaurant that has some kind of Thanksgiving themed special dinner. And granted I am suspicious of the oranges in this recipe

5:54: if you really want to know Octavius, per 15 tsp (or 14.7 tsp for the UK) is 40 calories or 167.3. Yes I converted it. And according to Wikipedia it has half the energy then regular mayo including fats. So it’s pretty much a mayonnaise substitute since it doesn’t have your traditional mayonnaise ingredients. Hope this helps somehow. 😅

I think a lot of these recipes come from three different things. 1 is, of course, the brands promoting ways to use their products more. 2 is fads, where people always try gimmicks with new foods or appliances, like the air fryer recipes we get now. And 3, people trying to appear cultured for dinner parties and potlucks, and massively over-thinking it.
