Not even that long. There's a wolf* research center up in Maine* that have been studying and breeding wolves* for decades. They showed how even without introducing any other breed of dog into mix, a few generations of breeding in captivity, resulted in physical changes to the wolves. Every generation they would start to take on more and more features of domestic dogs: shorter snouts, smaller teeth, droopy ears, different coats, etc. It was just the fact that they were being bred in captivity over generations doing this, not any outside genetic material being introduced. It was really surprising thing to see. *Edit: I was misremembering: it was foxes, not wolves; and it was Russians, not Maine. The rest still applies. People ask where I saw it: It was on the PBS show "Nature," season 25, episode 11; about 11 minutes 45 seconds in.

Back in high school one of my very close friends found "a puppy" on a back road we used a bunch. I swear it was a coyote pup that either got left behind or wandered out of the den or something like that. She looked just like a coyote in everyway!! She was a really cool pet and was smart as a whip. Was also very protective. It's been 30 years and I still think it was a coyote.

I found one on the side of the road near Brady, Texas about thirty years ago... He was only big enough to sit IN my hand. Wandered out of the brush onto the shoulder of the road... So I stopped and picked him up. I had that guy until he was about sixteen... And he just walked away one day and never returned. Named him "Buddy" and he was smart as a whip.

@@slicksnewonenow Thats a good story. I made a pet of a stray once too, a German shepherd female. I'm thinking he went away, left you when he was getting really old and he knew it, maybe he knew his time was up soon and he wanted to pass away in the wilds where he originally came from. I'm sure he loved you if he stayed with you that long though. 👍
@abitoffcenter38310 ай бұрын
@@slicksnewonenow Isn't it sorta odd how some animals that we have as pets* that we've either found in the wild or spend most of their time outside in the wild** just seem to go and never come back. What I mean by that. Is they know when it's their time to go. Sometimes I'd like to think it's to save us from the pain of loosing them. Which I know is just wishful thinking. I'm not sure what the life span of a coyote is. But maybe that's what happened in your case. I'm sorry to hear about you loosing Buddy in that way. No matter what, the loss is hard. * I don't see animals as OUR property. Imho, it's just not right to OWN a living breathing creatures that can chose to show affection or not. It's more a partnership in my eyes. **I'm talking about living on a farm or in the back woods. I've no idea about them living in the city. I've lived in town before. But that's not more than a population of 8K. I spent a few months in Houston in my younger years. Was visiting my brother. I don't think I slept for the first two weeks I was there. Then a couple years ago I spent about a week there. While my son was getting some treatment for his MS. He wasn't allowed to drive while going through that treatment. but all the damn noise ALL THE TIME!! It was definitely an experience. Not one I'd particularly like to repeat.

Please be careful. I had a pet raccoon that I raised from a little baby just a week old. As soon as he was old enough he was turned outside and free to roam our farm and wherever else he wanted to go. He was fairly tame and enjoyed being pet until he was a fully grown massive adult. I didn't heed his warnings and got bit and he didn't let go for a few seconds.
