After losing my old Taco, I'm happy to say I've upgraded to a new Tacoma with a fiberglass truck camper. So far I've lived in the thing for two months and driven it over 9000 miles.

First - glad you are okay from your accident. I looked serious. I had a a similar setup with a 2020 Tacoma and a Tufport T59. I have had many different setups, but I found this is absolutely the best for a single person. I thought I could provide a bit more information about the canopy/camper as I haven't seen too many other videos related to these canopies turned campers. The canopy is about 525 lbs. Most of the time I travel by myself so I was able to use it without any suspension modifications at all. I totally agree about the height concern related to regular truck campers - having a lower center of gravity and not having to worry as much about tree branches and rock overhangs on narrow rough roads is a definite advantage. The interior camper space is 60 inches by 75 inches. I am 5'10" so the north south bed as you have set up in your camper worked great. The T59 is 59 inches tall. Being able to sit up in bed and put on your shoes and clothes was a big bonus or a regular canopy setup I had before. You can easily work on your laptop sitting up as well. I had my bed setup so I could remove it in a couple of minutes. Wound up doing about five apartment moves, and that height meant I could stand dressers up on end, carry beds (the cab over was useful for this) and other furniture like chairs. I didn't have to worry about tarping to stop everything from getting wet, and could lock everything up inside. I actually think the camper makes the truck more useable as a truck. Tufports are made by a family owned business in Ladner, British Columbia Canada (just outside Vancouver). A large part of their business involves making off-road emergency canopies and refrigerated canopies for transporting tree seedlings. I think they have been in business for decades. These units just have to be built well to meet Canadian government regulations, or survive really rugged off-road use for the forest industry. I notice the seemed to have formed a partnership with a company called Wasatch Overland located in Utah. This means the units can be purchased on either side of the border. The base price they have for a T59 is about $10k. There are many options, including the inclusion of wooden strips to allow for attaching equipment on the sidewalls. I live in Canada, and travel at least 8000k/5000 miles a year on gravel and other off-roads. It is so solid that dust and water just does not get inside ever (except from your shoes of course). Note that when you a drive all day on gravel resource roads you may be travelling at 90-100k/50-60 miles per hour. You are also travelling with off-highway logging trucks and other resource industry workers travelling at even higher speeds to get to work etc. Often you have to pull over on the side of the road for a couple of minutes for the dust to clear. Out of curiosity I have been looking at some of the other more canopy based options that attach to your truck. All I can think of is the layers of dust that used to cover my gear when having a traditional canopy, in additional to broken zippers, tents with even tiny gaps that let the bugs in during the night, noisy windy nights from tent canvas and worrying about poking holes in the canvas even when it was good quality fabric. In the end I always come back to thinking the Tufport is the best option for me, the environment I live in, and typical driving conditions when on vacation. It looks like from your video you travel in similar areas. Thanks for taking the time to make your video. I hope you are really going to enjoy your new setup. Good luck and Happy travels.

Interesting paint job on the camper. I have the same camper from tuffport that I bought in 2002 -- but I have the canopy version (lighter weight) for my full sized 2002 4x4 manual trans chevy with 8 foot box. I bought the plain jane version and customized it for winter storm camping ski trips. Custom windows for storming, 1.5" thick styrofoam insulation, 20 cubic foot alum lock box, catylytic heater, vanagon camper van propane tank mounted under truck, crawl thru tunnel into the cab, special storming roof vent -- etc. Its served me well for trips from sking, mtnbiking, surfing, overlanding in Utah -- etc. 20 years old and the camper has no leaks or cracks. I think you will like yours. I did however add air bags to the rear -- seams to help with washboard and I can jack up the clearance at the rear bumper.

I had a 2004 Pre Runner 4cyl. Over a 13 year period I built 4 campers on it. I loved that truck. Never an issue with the truck and very little maintenance was required. I bought it for 18K and sold it for 7K. I had about 200K on the odometer when I sold it. I miss it so much, but unfortunately my dog outgrew the right seat and I had to get a vehicle that would fit her. Mine was an extended cab. You will love your Tacoma also. You got a nice rig there.

I've been looking for the right setup for myself to go nomadic. That led me to this video. Cool setup. I have so much stuff that I gotta get rid of. So this video led me to Red Taco's last run. Someone is watching over you! I hope you're recovering well. And, go buy some lottery tickets 😉 Best of luck to you!
