Thanks. I haven't sewed since highschool and I'm 45 years old now. It took a few tries threading the needle, but after eyeballing the needle clasp, I'm a pro now. I'm sewing!

I learned to sew on a Singer treadle sewing machine a hundred years ago! Well, it feels like that long! It was heaven when I bought an early electronic machine many years ago. Now I have upgraded to an all singing, all dancing one and I am in heaven! One important thing you didn't mention (I'm sorry if you actually did and I know this is a very basic introduction!) is, when changing the upper thread to cut it near the reel/spool and pull the loose end down through the machine via the needle. This saves too much lint getting in the machine as you are not pulling the thread back through the machine though it should be cleaned often but cleaning would be another video. It is nice that you have made this video as, for beginners, reading how to do something on a new machine makes much more sense when you actually see it.

Great video. I don’t think you mentioned that it’s super important to thread your machine with the foot up so the thread can correctly sit in between the tension discs.

Me too. The DVD that came with it had a damaged area at the beginning, so I was hoping to find the same video on youtube. I know from past experiences that I'm prone to being intimidated by sewing machines and and tend to leave them sitting around collecting dust. I don't want to do that this time.

I just got this same machine, and I’m totally an absolute newbie to all this. The DVD that came with this got me started with the single stitching with the dial on the top right and I tried to reverse (as instructed by the DVD) and the reverse lever wouldn’t move. So I tried just using a regular stitch, and the reverse lever worked. Does this mean the reverse lever doesn’t work on single stitch setting?

I think it would be good to remake this video because you are off camera during winding the bobbin segment. Also, very blurred at key points. I did love the part on the automatic threader. FYI it wasn't working for me - I finally figured out the thread wasn't thin enough to go through the needle. What needle would you use for thicker threads? When I changed to thin thread, it worked great.

Hey I hope all is well. I just had a question. I'm trying to sew belt loops and want to stitch at the very edge of the piece of clothing. Do you think that's possible with this machine? It looks like those two tracks under the needle that moves the clothing are too wide unless I can just lay the piece under one of the tracks and it will still move properly. Thanks!

Gee wayyyyy back in 1974 I got a sewing machine for my graduation. It's what I wanted. At that time it cost about $350.00. It didn't have half these stitches on it. I still have it. Only it's too heavy for me to lift. So I'm looking for a lighter weight one to use.

Great Video - Thanks! First time sewer here. I found the bobbin kept getting tangled up every 3-4 uses with the needle actually snapping one time, and the top needle frequently lost the thread . I was doing a lot forward and backward sewing. Would that contribute to the problems above or maybe I got a dud GX-73 or maybe it's just me not knowing what I'm doing?

I’m thinking you might have gotten a bad machine or maybe it is not threading correctly because sewing back and forth should not be messing up your needles.

I have used a Bernina for years and just got this machine used. I am brand new to Brother and so excited to start using. I'm confused about the SS stitches.
