Theory: The old man knew it would be impossible to sucker a truly worthy replacement into taking on that job for life, so he omitted the reason why the light has to stay on, and didn't show him what happens when it's off, then sacrificed himself on the beach to guilt him into taking on his legacy.

These things are scared of any source of light so i would probably spend some money on replacing that stupid door and look into getting a better generator. After that it's free money, getting paid to do nothing as i fixed the problems that would have made the job threatening

Great story! Seems like, though, the BEST way to manage this would have been to have the old lighthouse keeper stay with the rookie until the first power outage - then you show the kid what the deal is, how to handle it, and NOW you retire!

He shouldn't have any job though. If the survival of everyone in the town depends on it there should be 2 lighthouses each with a backup battery system that comes on automatically in a power outage. Then you just need somebody to come by each day and make sure nothing has broken, but it's not an emergency because the system has full redundancy.

@@duckmeat4674 I mean how would he explain it exactly? Even in the case of the dropping of a pen causing ww3, there's not really a way to explain that to someone and have them believe you, let alone not think you're crazy then be tempted to do it just to see what happens. Just my opinion anyway

@@baddragonite he would probably lie and say there are light sensors underwater that pick up the lighthouse light. If the light goes out for too long then it causes the town nearby into an emergency lockdown. Say its a soviet thing that still around. Doesnt have to be that exactly that, but use 1% of your imagination to explain it better than "just dont". Literally he didnt turn on the light and apocalyptical creatures came out. Same thing as dropping a pen and causing ww3

Lighthouse horror is right with this story. Rip to the old man. He was definitely the mvp. I mean he could've explained it, but mc's like this wouldn't have taken it seriously. Mc's like this need to learn by experience, unfortunately it will always be at the expense of other characters

While the narration is excellent as usual this is a classic example of a story where characters do dumb things not because they would but because the story requires that they do. Considering how important his job was the Old Man would surely have shut down the light for a little while to show his young, unbelieving replacement just what happens when you don't keep it on If he came down to the beach every night because he was worried you'd have thought he'd have wandered over to the Lighthouse and banged on the door the moment the Light didn't come back on. Or at even done so right after he torched off a Flare... Or at the very least just brought more than just one flare... For that matter even a dumb kid like the MC should have been smart enough to know if your one job is to keep the Light shining then its pretty easy for anyone who looks out of their window at night to see you're derelicting your duty and get you fired from your cushy job

I was so annoyed with the careless attitude of the main character. Then the anxiety level built up when the clumsy fool couldn't get the generator started. I was all in! Kudos to the author and my favorite narrator.

Didn't finish; won't finish; not Stephen's fault. Stories like this one just puts me off because the root cause of everything that goes wrong isn't the failure of the protagonist to follow instructions, but the incompetence of the mentor to teach their apprentice properly. The whole fiasco could have been avoided easily and all Wallace had to do was turn the light off on the first night and say, "Have a look out there. Do you see them? Now watch this." Not only does it show the importance of keeping the light on in a way that cannot be discarded or disputed, it shows the apprentice that they are not entering into a simple job, but into a sacred mission, and that sets up a _much_ more compelling story. Anyway, if you read this far... thanks.

Who will watch the watchman? Interestingly, I feel like this story would do with a bit more length. The frustrating hubris and ineptitude of the protagonist made for excellent tension, but I suspect the ending would have packed a harder punch if there had been some buildup. Time spent getting to know the old man, providing something left for him lose, building their relationship up beyond a couple weeks with your new supervisor. And longer moments of mundanity--red herrings that built up small mounds of suspense that lead nowhere, each time undermining the old man's suspicions and making every fearful moment collapse, like the waves drawing back ahead of a tsunami. The story does a great job in the short length it has. I'd love to see this writer build it out a bit. No need to go for the length of War and Peace, but maybe like... Metamorphosis. A nice novella length. That'd be swell~

I'd honestly repair the entire thing: better generator, better door, SOLAR PANELS for goodness' sake! Not just one power source! Also, I'd make the place more livable. So I can be cozy in those nights, and make it appealing for the next person who will take over after me. Heck, I'll even put a garden and a small tourist area to take pictures... RIP the old man.

I’ve listened to this multiple times because it’s such great storytelling, but I can’t help wondering why with so much at stake you wouldn’t have a few portable spotlights on hand charged up and ready to go. If the 100W bulb from the door light sent the creature screaming, an LED torch from Home Depot with 100K lumens would do even better. The same goes for the old man on the beach who could have lit up the entire area with multiple spotlights instead of just firing one flare. Also, lighthouses focus their beams out to sea and not to illuminate the immediate area. Instead, you would light up the whole area with a bank of LEDs with failsafe backups instead of relying on a rickety old generator and an ancient mechanism. My garage is better protected from monsters than this town. Although I have never seen a mermaid crawling around, I do live in Chicago where we have our own monsters. This is what you get when instead of just enjoying a good story, you overthink things, which I tend to do. It’s a great story as is, the lack of torches and common sense monster security notwithstanding.

Ok but was there some rule about the old man not being able to just tell the new guy about the monsters? That could have saved everyone a lot of trouble... Also, if this lighthouse is critical to the survival of everyone in the town how does it not have a backup battery that comes on automatically??? It wouldn't be that difficult or expensive to set up.

Awesome story Stephen, the lighthouse stories are my favourite. Personally I would love a 'Lighthouse ' story playlist on the channel. The conditions the men had to endure while building a lot of the lighthouses are pretty horrifying, especially the ones around Northern England, Ireland and Scotland. As crazy as it sounds I would sell up and move anywhere in the world to man a lighthouse, my crazy dream job! Cheers Stephen, Lee.

I literally could not get over the fact that he locked the generator door but not the door to the outside, why would you even need to lock the generator door in the first place unless it’s for waterproofing. Then you’d also need to lock the outside, and it’d make sense anyway to lock the outside.

Just not enough good ocean-related horror stories...and this one was excellent! Considering that over 60% of the world's population lives within 20-minutes of the ocean, you'd think there'd be a lot more horror stories like this out there...boats, creatures, shores, islands...but, sadly, there isn't.

I heard this story on the NoSleep Podcast (Season12 I think) a few years ago, it's a really good story. Both NoSleep Podcast and Lighthouse Horror have good narrators/voice actors.

At first the ending was scary, but than it got really sad. The music did a great job of making it even sadder (or scarier at times). Thx for another great story :D!
