I got hit by lightning while filming in the Everglades in Florida. While filming some content for Garmin, I waded into the swamps of Florida, filled with alligators, to show off some great Garmin products. While I was talking about my GPS systems, a bolt of lightning struck the swamp I was thigh-deep in.

During a canoe trip at camp lightning struck the little rocky island we had all our tents on at a similar distance. Very grateful none of us were in the water at the time. Counsellors were freaking out, I definitely inherited a healthy respect for thunder storms that day🫨

Similar story, I was out fishing in the Great Lakes and get ready to drop my anchor for my 24 ft aluminum boat and I looked off in the distance, and it was dark gray clouds and thunder. I look at the radar it look gonna pass me. But got a gut got feeling that you know I probably should head back and go home i’m in an aluminum and there’s thunder and it’s probably not a good idea😅 so decided to head back and make it back safe. I literally tie up my boat to my grandpa dock. Jump in my truck and it literally started down pouring really hard like cats and dogs and hailed a little bit and then it die down a little bit where I could see and decided to drive back home then I’m driving home Along the water when literally lightning struck 3 feet away 😅where I was going to anchor and fish‼️ don’t know if I had a Guardian angel watching over me😇 or maybe just a little bit of common sense maybe a little bit of both😂‼️ and was the end of June when it happened

As an electrician, I can definitely say that the lightning strike absolutely made your muscles tighten up, which can make you very sore. I’ve been hit with 120 and 480 volts and it made me sore. A lightning strike is several times worse than the worst I’ve ever experienced. I would say you both got lucky in terms of what could happen with your heard, though I’m sure the sound itself made you feel like your heart skipped a beat. Glad everyone is alright.

@@bigt9374I mean, the water is the only reason he got lit up in this situation. If it hit 15 ft away from him not in a pool he woulda felt it a lot less. It’s safer to be in a body of water that gets hit than directly hit yourself, yes.
@hoon_sol
@hoon_sol 7 ай бұрын
@@ghostpiratelechuck2259: While one might intuitively suspect that, it's not actually the case. I wrote up a detailed analysis of the entire situation with some references to IEEE and IEC safety limits in a top-level comment, if you're interested. Long story short: what he's experiencing in this situation is step potential, that's why his glutes and quads specifically are so sore from cramping up; in layman's terms, it's current flowing between his legs as a result of a potential difference between them and any alternative route being resistive enough for sufficient current to flow through the legs too. Understanding this, it's easy to see that the less resistive, i.e. more conductive, the path along the medium his legs is standing on (or in this case _in_ rather than on) is, the less current will flow through his legs. If he were standing on the ground, the ground would offer up far more resistance, and far more current would go through his legs, could even be sufficient to cause fibrillation even despite not going directly through the heart. This could be why Mitch was the only one who explicitly mentioned feeling it in the heart, as he was standing on the ground on the other side, but it would've helped him too that the water would be carrying away a lot of current quickly. So the water was actually very beneficial here.

He said that my dad's body seized up, he lifted himself off the ground with the arm that was touching the rig and then he dropped to the ground and started running. About ten feet from the rig he fell to his knees and all of his body cramped up. His arms bent in towards his chest and his hands were clinched in fists and he could move for a good minute or two. When he had finally gotten up and got to the truck he took a drink of his sprite and said that he didnt realize until then that his teeth were hot and his hard hat was gone ( they never found it) and at some point he peed his pants😂 We are still waiting for him to get super powers or something 😂

Lightning then hit the backstop, like 40 feet away. It traveled in the ground, where the STEEL METAL pole was grounded and the bench I was sitting on also was metal and had steel poles in the ground. It had me jump off the bench after what felt like my hold body got it not just my ass n legs. AND THE WEIRD THING IS I got that same metallic taste in my mouth (I had braces on at the time too) so it just tasted like I had a bunch of change coins in my mouth.

Me and my cousin had almost the exact same thing happen to us a few years back while fishing. His girlfriend called and told him we better head back we have a big storm coming and we didn't listen not even 10 minutes later lightning hit about 10 to 20ft away from us. Probably the scariest thing I've ever had happen.

That was a seriously close call. Would've been the worst loss since Steve Irwin. I'm so glad you guys are okay.

Jeeeeeeeeeeeez! Glad you guys are ok! Please be careful on your journeys! From Eastern Washington state, got some gnarly lightning storms there, glad I'm up north now, just gotta deal with bears and moose. 😆

My parents would take my siblings and I out in the old Dodge 1-ton van during thunder/lightning storms and would play classical music. Some of the best memories I have from living there.

I fish the back country, at the first sign of lightning pack it up and run towards the ramp, if you can see the storm and dodge it you're good. If you can't see the storm run to the ramp and live to fish another day.

Every time I see this video I jump and gasp. You are so lucky. You and anyone who was hit should have had medical attention. You can have a heart attack after being struck by lightning. The heart attack can happen hours later. Be safe out there. Blessings ❤️🌺

Ok, so I live basically on the New Mexico Colorado state line about an hour north of Taos. About 2 months ago I was laying on the ground under the 65 Volkswagen Bus that I'm restoring. I was on my back had a wrench and I was reaching up to tighten the master cylinder bolts and I heard the lightening crack, I seen the arc from my wrench to the bolt and then I felt the shock. All happened in a split second. My friend was standing 4 feet away. He said he seen the lightening bolt strike a mile, ish, away. That electricity ran underground almost a mile away and I felt it enough to not only scare the ever loving shit out of me but also make me pretty damned concerned. I could feel pain in my left shoulder, armpit, chest and the top few ribs. Luckily the shock didn't travel through my heart directly. Holy shit!! I'm 44, been all over the damn place, never even came close to being struck. Smh. Definitely made me start thinking twice about doing certain things as recklessly as I have done in the past.

Great video, love your content. One question, you get into a body of water, with alligators, in a thunder and lightning storm, and you call it a controlled environment? 🤨
