Lego used to make trains that were run by being plugged straight into a wall rather than running on batteries like they do now. This is by far the best Lego train that there is.

I found this set in 2021 at a garage sale for $50.00. The train itself was never built still in original poly bags. Each train car had its own bag with a picture of that particular build on the bag. The only drawback was the original small cars and truck were missing. And I couldn’t test it out for one of the curved tracks was missing. But after building the train I developed builders remorse because it was such an old set.😂lol

I think the problem with the Hogwarts Express is not the weight, as the 9V motor is heavy enough: It's the technic axles connecting the wheels of the locomotive. I removed them with my train and it runs so much smoother. Also bear in mind that the original HE waggons from the set you own need to be slightly modified for some curves, bc the 3L axle is too short for the needed distance between waggons. They do touch in S-curves and switch points and derail!
@brickstudiosYT
@brickstudiosYT 6 ай бұрын
How would I remove the axles from the front engine with keeping the wheels on? And yeah I found out about the wagon connectors when I built my extra cars 😂
@judekw6034
@judekw6034 6 ай бұрын
@@brickstudiosYT I mean the technic axles on the outside simulating the coupling rods :) As the wheels slightly turn in opposite directions when in a curve, they touch the rod with the outward facing side of the wheel.

I prefer batteries since my house is old so it doesn't have as many powerpoints/outlets/recepticles, whatever you like to call them, it just doesn't have many, my gaming room only has 1 SINGLE outlet, not even 2 sockets in one! So I use two 6 port power boards/power strips/surge pretectors, again, whatever you like to call them, and don't question my potato PC with a GTX 970, some 4th gen Intel I7, just don't question it, atleast it works, well it's running Windows 11 Pro on a 4th gen CPU, I thought you needed 8th gen, oh well.@@brickstudiosYT

The issue your Hogwarts Express is having isnt weight. Did you flip the lock on the Hogwarts Express? The train has a lock mechanism that prevents the front most wheels from turning freely when the lock is in the down position. I can see its down so the train isn't in "free mode". Try flipping the lock into free mode (lift it up.) If it still doesn't work it's because the wheels on the HE engine has no traction. but this is fixable using O bands from a hardware store (bring a wheel with you for size comparison for the right one to fit like a glove) then use it on the track .i have this HE and motorizing it was easy but that lock the set makes you build prevents the wheels from turning left and right

I remember getting that set when i was a little kid, along with the switch tracks and cross track. Nowadays the pieces had split into the dusty collection. Still have everything, though; motor, speed dial, adapter, metal tracks. As for the question of battery vs 9V, since i never used battery, i say 9V, and yes, no worry about batteries and just simply plug into a wall (unless you experience a power outage). Those chrome pieces, i miss when lego made those.

everyone svears by the 9 volt train system but I'm personally partial to the grey 12volt system. mostly because there was a controll unit for it that you could attatch modules to let you controll EVERY aspect of your train lay out from the trains to the lights and switches. and yeah the speed controller isnt' the expensive part in this set there were a lot of versions of it it's that cable thats the expensive part.

Thank you for this video. Many kids of 90s were dreaming about it like about nothing else. And god damn, I still do!!!! It had such a remarkable electric blue color and weird shapes. For some reason I associated this train it with 90s aesthetic, movies like 5th Element, games like Unreal Tournament etc. Many videos about history of Lego trains are quite skeptical about this one, they're calling it weird. Probably they are just not 90s kids.

Battery powered is pretty good IMO. I jumped to powered-up straight from the blue-era 4.5V battery trains, and it works really well. With some experience from 'proper' model railroad I know that wall-plugged can have great advantages, but only if the system is digital so you can run multiple trains and power accessories directly off the track (which is always live). So: 9V Lego is fun, but certainly not better than the current RC battery trains.
@JaredJanhsen
@JaredJanhsen 5 ай бұрын
The 9V electric was a great system. However, I get why it was discontinued. Safety for the target age demographic is paramount. Sadly Lego never gave us an enhanced DCC style electrified rail. My Load and Haul railroad is in a bin in my dad's attic. Though I don't think it is put together, it's in pieces.

How is it unsafe though? It's 9 volts. Short of tearing the wall wart apart, and at that point I'd argue batteries are equally dangerous, I can't see a way to get a shock from that.

9V is actually really cool, but the main reason I think people prefer RC over 9V is that with powered tracks, you can reverse the track, it is expensive, and all the motors will run together at some time, that's why people prefer RC too because any model train fans out there know about DCC, and the Lego train RC series shows that very well. But if you can find and afford one, I would personally recommend the LEGO 12V system, it's awesome!

I think the reason it doesn't pull and push that well on the Hogwarts train is because the pins on that particular train doesn't put the rest of the train's weight on it (theres a little bit of up and down sway) it could be fixed by making the connecting plates thicker

@brickstudiosYT
@brickstudiosYT 5 ай бұрын
Well multiple trains can still run on the same track with 9v, they just all have to go the same speed. The power and speed are fairly close between the two, but batteries slowly die which makes the battery powered ones unreliable. Still, 9v is way better than battery powered.
@kauske
@kauske 5 ай бұрын
@@brickstudiosYT Running multiple motors on the same 9/12v track for any track powered model train actually cuts the effective power of each motor; interestingly enough. 2-3 on the same train would be a net gain, but 2-3 separate trains will slow everything down. The new Li-Ion power packs for the latest ones are -roughly- on par with the 9V; but I've compared the previous system that ran on AA batteries, and it was noticeably inferior; even with a brand new set of batteries. About the only advantage was the AA's were always stored in the loco, so it had more mass and could use more of its tractive effort; they also had rubber on the wheels as well. If you put a few of those ballast bricks they used to give with the real floating boats, and added some rubber bands to the 12/9v motors they could tug along a dozen cars with ease. With the current systems you could actually have multiple locos that give a significant boost to the train, but that's a lot of expensive powered up parts. One really has to wonder why LEGO as a company abandoned the 9V system, perhaps the cost of the metal railed tracks, or they wanted to offer the better control scheme that comes with self contained locomotives.
@TheRealStrikerofLife

i have said it before i will say it again. Lego should switch to 12-24V powered rail system and having that provide power to a similar system to what they currently use it. this would be in line with current model trains and would allow lego to compete with them. also would get away from the piles and piles of dead batteries.

I think really the only reason people like this, is because the wall power allows for continuously running display tracks. That's something only very few people do, though, and the playability of these old sets is much worse than what you can do now, *especially* with the enhanced controller sets. Because these old sets: (1) can't do programmable movement (no stopping at stations automatically, no turning on lights in tunnels, etc.), (2) can't attach powered functions (lights, motorized doors, people even put cranes on MOCs) (3) multi-track operation (you need some advanced building techniques to make working sidings even). IMO, if you think about it even for a few minutes, you'll see why modern lego trains are just better in pretty much every respect except being able to literally run forever without recharging. And how bad is that really? You get days of playtime before a battery change.
@brickstudiosYT
@brickstudiosYT 4 ай бұрын
There's definitely pros and cons of both. The 9v system is actually compatible with power functions and Lego mindstorms, as long as you have the right cables. But yeah the newer trains are definitely easier to code for that sort of stuff but I do love not having to worry about batteries!

love the old lego train stuff. still have some of it, i remember how rough i was with that cable as a kid... now its worth a lot :O maybe the problem at the end is that the other parts of the train that are not engine have plastic wheels? the old lego train wheels are metal, i believe. it could also be from the carts lifting the engine in the air due to the height difference. haha had a thought, maybe also a way to fix it would be to put rubber rings or bands around the wheel... oh wait, that would not work xD good night, i enjoyed the video

I do not really like the fact that Lego use battery powered trans now. It is inconvenient to have to change them but with 9v you get much more space inside the trains without having th battery box and receiver in there
