Okay imma get slightly ranty here but uh the fandom is fully incorrect when they say Race's name is Anthony, Racetrack Higgins was an actual leader in the real Newsboys Strike of 1899, he was actually the leader of Brooklyn (it's widely speculated that Spot Conlon was actually just an alias of his which makes Sprace that much funnier of a ship) and his real name is known to be Ed, not Anthony

I’m gonna rant along with you for a second if you’ll allow me :). Race, Jack, Spot, Buttons, and Barney Peanuts are all names that were mentioned in the papers as being associated with the strike. All their tales and stories are sort of formed into one figure in the musical, Jack Kelly. So yes, in real life Race’s name probably wasn’t Anthony, but the fandom pretty much agrees that the fictional, Manhattan version of “Race” is Anthony. Thanks for the cool comment btw!

@@sparrow8534 Spot Conlon was the Grand Master Workboy of Brooklyn-I don't think the Brooklyn newises really had a "leader," but Racetrack stepped in when David and Blink were bought out. they could have been the same person, but no one really knows because it was really badly documented (correct me if I'm wrong)

Racetrack is called Racetrack because he bets on horses by the tracks on the daily. Specs is called Specs because he can't see. Crutchie is called Crutchie because he has exactly one crutch. Davey is called Davey cause Jack gave him that nickname from David. & Spot is called Spot because he has a Dalmatian and all the Brooklyn boys started calling him that.

I play Jojo in a production of Newsies and to be completely honest I’m kinda digging the name Jonah. Like, hello newsies fandom his real name doesn’t have to be JORGELINO JOSEPHINO DE LA GUERRA. Like dAmN that’s long, it could be Jonah De La Guerra.

Its historically accurate tho, considering the Spanish-american war that happened a year prior to the musical timeline. And jonah isn't a Spanish name, so it would make no sense to have his last name be of Spanish descent. And Spanish names are usually very long anyway.

And Jorgelino Josephino de la Guerra gives us insight onto his past because 'de la Guerra' means from the war, giving us the inference that he comes from a troubled past. I think it's a perfect name for him tbh :)
