You probably already figured it out by now, but if not. The core of baseball rules is as such. The box is the ‘strike zone’ if the ball passes through it and the batter either misses the swing or does not swing for it, it’s a strike. If it goes outside the box and the batter does not swing for it, it’s a ball, if he swings for it and misses, it’s a strike. 3 strikes and the batter is out. 4 balls and the batter gets to walk to first base. If the ball hits the batter do to a wild pitch from the pitcher, the batter gets to automatically walk. (Though that might be after a fight breaks out between the teams, also called a ‘bench clearing brawl’) An interesting thing is foul balls. If the ball gets hit too far to the left or right (there are yellow poles usually on the far left and right of field denoting the line. Though generally you can just say if it is too far left of third base or too far right of first it is a foul) if you have no strikes and you foul 2 balls. It counts as your first two strikes, but all fouls after are mulligans basically. This lead to an interesting event between a batter and pitcher recently where the pitcher threw 17 pitches to the same batter cause he kept hitting them foul. 17th pitch was a strike which ended the stalemate. Knock it out of the park, you get yourself and any other person of your team on base at the time to come to home plate to score a point. If base 1, 2, and 3 have a runner on it, it’s ‘bases loaded’. You get a home run with bases loaded, it’s a ‘grand slam’. As a batter, grand slams are one of the greatest things you can get and it lights up the crowd. For pitchers, there is an even greater holy grail that a pitcher covets more than most anything. It’s the ‘perfect game’ it’s when no batter from the opposing team ever reaches first base the entire nine innings of the game. When a batter hits a ball he starts running for first and becomes a runner. If the ball is caught, he is automatically out. If it hits the ground, it’s considered a live ball and the opposing team has to either touch the player with it or toss it to the base he is running to so someone can catch it with their foot on base before the runner can touch it. That is how they get runners out. If a runner gets on a base before the baseman gets the ball, he is safe on that base till the next live ball or the inning switches do to outs. A runner can attempt to steal a base when the pitcher is getting ready to throw to the next batter, but it is very risky unless you got a lot of speed on you. If you get three outs, the team at bat and the team pitching switches. This switch is denoted by saying ‘top of’ and ‘bottom of’. So team A at bat with team B pitching in the 3rd inning would be ‘top of the 3rd’ and after 3 outs, team B will get a turn at bat with team A pitching and this would be ‘bottom of the 3rd’. The innings and games system works a lot like cricket though. You have 9 innings in a game and there is multiple games in a series before a winner is declared. Usually it’s best of 5 games, the baseball championship series though is best of 7. Baseball can be very exciting but also can be very dull at times, so some funny stuff can happen when it’s not to serious a game which is what really made baseball great cause of all the shenanigans the players could get into on the downtimes of the game. Hope that clears it up some.

oh wow crazy speeds

A batter has 150 milliseconds (less than a blink of the eye), in that time they need to identify what type pitch is being thrown and instantly adjust their swing. The ball is only in the "hitting zone" for 10 milliseconds. Hitting a round object with another round object (with the accuracy 1/2:the size of a sim card) at i that speed has been argued the toughest thing to do in all of sports.

I mean 12 year olds are throwing 100-110 KPH the fastest pitch recorded was about 170.2 KPH (105.8 MPH) The number of MLB pitchers who can't throw 148 KPH can probably be counted on 2 hands

Lol if you start your swing before the pitch leaves the pitchers hand... Most of the time you miss it lol.

But pitchers will also purposely throw outside the strike zone trying to get batters to chase a bad ball for a swinging strike.

so if you swing at the ball even if its a bad ball thats a strike sounds harsh lol

@@ChatwinReacts yes if you swing and miss at any pitch its a strike against you.if the ball goes through the strike zone the batter must make contact with the ball or its another strike against the batter.

@@ChatwinReacts The 90 which appeared when Trout hit the baseball wasn't the speed of the ball after Trout hit it by the way, that was the speed of the pitch. Usually the speed of the ball after the bat hits it (usually referred to as exit velocity) is much faster than the speed of the pitch.

I believe I read a study where it’s estimated to travel 10-15% further. Have you read anything with how much further the balls travel there?

@@edmondlau511 Well, the MLB just played a game in mexico city which is 7000ft above sea level compared to the 5000 at denver. Well lets just say the score was something like 16 - 11 so I would say the altitude matters a lot.

a lot of those were at Coors field because it was taken from the All-Star game home run derby there.

Also wanted to mention that the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox are both Major League Baseball teams!

Most of these home runs are being done at Coors Field in Denver. The mile high altitude decreases the effectiveness of pitchers breaking balls, while allowing the ball to travel farther. It’s basically a nerf to pitching and nature’s steroids for hitters.

And probably another 5-10 ways that happen infrequently.

Don't shit on guys like Ruth or Gehrig. In their era, the ball wasn't as "lively" as it is today, pitchers threw off of a higher mound, pitchers weren't afraid to pitch inside, and a spitball was a legal pitch.

I suspect the shift of weight does contribute to power, it certainly helps with a golf swing, it's just less of a factor than bat speed or timing.

@@psymar Even baseball trainers will tell you that the power does not come from the shift of weight. I always shifted my weight forward when I was batting, and I had no power. The shift helped me to move with the pitch and time my swing. I was an excellent contact hitter, but no power to speak of.

The biggest issue, IMHO, is that you can't watch baseball on TV (except for post season) unless you have cable or pay for a streaming service. The other big sports are all on free broadcast TV. It is still hugely popular as a kids sport and may even have more youth participation than football.

I’m not up to speed with baseball rules anymore - is the square still unofficial, only for TV? Or do they actually use it in officiating (I.e., when a challenge is made to a called ball / strike)?

@peacefrog0521 You can't challenge balls and strikes. An actual strike and ball is based on where the umpire sees the ball enter the catcher's mitt. What you can challenge are check swing calls and calls for plays on the field. The little box on TV is for the viewer and is just for our sake because it's fun to boo the umpire.

@@richardbigouette3651 😄 Thanks. I’ve watched very little baseball in 10 years since I cut my cable 😄. You might know this already, but for others not so familiar (I’ve only been watching regularly since 2011, and am still learning the nuances), cricket 🏏 (or at least “big league” cricket such as International matches and “premier leagues”) has DRS (I forget what the “D” stands for 😅). Not necessarily used uniformly, and not used for every delivery of the ball. Mostly used for dismissals, such as to determine if a batsman is lbw (leg before wicket, the rough equivalent of “crowding the plate”. It actually has ball tracking (similar to what I’ve seen in tennis) to determine if the ball impacts in line with the wickets, and to determine if the predicted path of the ball would have hit the wickets, had it not hit the batsman. There’s also UltraEdge (also called “snicko”) to determine by sound if the bat made contact with the ball, either before hitting the batsman (in which case the batsman is Not Out), or if the ball is caught from behind, to determine if the bat made contact with the ball, thus ruling him Out (somewhat similar to a foul tip into the catcher’s mitt). Again usually these are employed as challenges by either team rather than umpire reviews, though obviously the umpires themselves can also refer to DRS if desired. Usually the on-field umpire will initiate a slow motion replay review in the case of a run-out, to confirm whether a ball thrown at the wicket by a fielder makes contact before the runner “is in his ground” (crosses the line in front of the wicket, with his bat or other part of his body grounded behind the line). Also sometimes a slo-mo is used to determine if a ball has crossed the boundary “in the fly” (meaning 6 runs), or “on the hop” (meaning 4 runs). Or in some cases if a fielder attempts to prevent a 4 by blocking the ball before it contacts the boundary; even if the ball itself does not, if the fielder makes contact with the boundary AND the ball at the same instant, a 4 is awarded.
