In the National League, pitchers used to have to come to the plate and swing the bat, and some of them were decent hitters, but they were often laser focused on their pitching that the vast majority of them had terrible batting stats. But because the American League's designated hitter meant that all 9 players in the batting order can be competent or even outstanding hitters (giving them a big advantage over their NL counterparts), both leagues now use the designated hitter rule. When Ohtani first started negotiating with MLB, most teams wanted him as a pitcher or as a batter, but not both. It was unheard-of for a player to both consistently shut down the other team's batters _and_ slug home runs and steal bases. The Angels was the only organization who gave him a chance and introduced the first "two-way player" (TWP), a player who can swing the bat as a DH and also pitch when it's his turn to start the game on the mound. The last MLB player who could reasonably be called a two-way player was the legendary Babe Ruth. Shohei Ohtani is the entire game of baseball in one man. He has a devastatingly effective pitching arsenal (when he's healthy), he can hit anywhere on the field and a bunch of home runs, and he is so fast that he can get infield hits and steal bases. You should check out his recent plays with the Dodgers. He's still smashing home runs, even though he's technically a pitcher recovering from elbow surgery.

1:20 "Is that legal??" Oh yes, very much so. As long as the ball never touches the ground, any number of players can "volleyball" the baseball until it's caught and it's still an out. 7:50 If the ball isn't caught and it drops out of play, it's a home run. If the ball is caught by the outfielder, the batter is out, it's one of those Gold Glove type plays and it usually doesn't matter where the ball was when caught. I think if the ball is tipped back into the field of play, it's a ground rule double...? Someone check me on that last one. Trying to catch a ball that is on the other side of the wall could result in an injury, I've seen players climbing the wall to try to make that kind of play, and it's generally discouraged. 9:42 I know that voice anywhere, that's Vin Scully, legendary broadcaster for the LA Dodgers until he retired in... 2014? 2017? 10:10 Sometimes a baserunner and even the 3rd base coach will misread an outfielder, and clearly that outfielder, while he took his sweet time getting to the ball, has quite the throwing arm. That's how you turn an extra-base hit into an out.

There is so much more to the game than record long balls. Hitting the ball far is impressive, but a 400 ft home run is no different than a 480 ft home run in terms of scoring. There are other feats like a shutout, a no-hitter, and grand slam, the latter being a real team effort. You might notice that a lot of these homers are at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. That's because the thinner, drier air and relatively small field size makes it a lot easier for hitters to smash home runs at Coors Field.

It's has been a year so I am not sue this will help The video you choose has a LOY of errors and omissions For example Foul ball, it's NOT where it lands, it where it was when it crosses third base, so a ball can curve and land foul, but if it was in fair territory when it's past third base in it is a fair ball He did no discuss a balk of foul tip

Be a Cincinnati Bengals fan like me. For decades, we have been the scrappy underdogs of the AFC North. We have never won the Super Bowl, while all of our division rivals have at least won once. And bonus... over the last 4 years, the Bengals have transformed under Joe Burrow, and are now unanimously considered to be a championship contenter(widely considered one of the top 3 teams currently) and the only team considered to be a threat to the current top team, the Chiefs... P.s. I know I'm late lol

He is one of the best players to play the game, he is also a giant because the average player is around 6 feet, he's 6 feet 8 inches and 280+ pounds. It's the reason why he's been made the first captain of the Yankees since Derek Jeter. He holds the record for most home runs in a single season in the American League, National league only has two above him but they are both controversial since both were found to have used steroids.

To answer your question about records, a .600 winning percentage is really good. You're not going to see a team go 67-3 or anything like that because baseball is just so random on a day-to-day basis. Bad teams beat good teams in a single game all the time throughout the season. Non-baseball fans like to complain about how there's so many games in a baseball season, but there is a reason for it -- you need a lot of games to be able to separate the good from the mediocre. There's an old adage in baseball that every team wins 54 games and every team loses 54 games, it's what you do in the other 54 that define your success.

Yeah, but rugby is a slower sport by and large. No forward pass means a lot of scrumming around. I know you run, i know you hit, but most of the game is low to medium speed impact with softer immediate goals and not a TON of form plays. Rugby is a very fluid game with loose strategy. Football is a very formulaic game with very strick strategy. They are close, but not the same.

Chatwin you mentioned the helmets and shoulder pads. We learn how to use those pads as weapons... Adverts are very important. These companies spend big money for those spots. People pick teams by where they live. Or a nearby city or region.. Way back years ago the Pittsburgh Steelers did poorly. Since those bad old days, the Steelers have won six of them. Ages ago Pittsburgh PA. was known for its steel mills. Thus the name. Until the next time!!

Back in the 80s, only 2 teams had superstatiions... What I mean is 2 teams we're televised across the country. The Cubs had WGN out of Chicago & the Braves had TBS. Both of these 2 teams' games we're televised across 48 continental states, maybe even Alaska & Hawaii too, I'm not sure. These 2 teams have massive followings because so many people fell in love with & follow them. I say, become a Braves fan because of their history, but I could be partial because that's who I grew up loving...

An under appreciated part of the physicality of the game is what happens on the line of scrimmage. First, know that the guys lined up on the offensive and defensive lines are the biggest and strongest guys in the game. Each of those guys are engaged in a battle for physical domination on every play. There is an incredible amount of strategy, technique, power and quickness playing out in those trenches. Smart teams, like my Philadelphia Eagles place a very high priority on building the best offensive and defensive lines. The guys with the ball get all the glory but the games are determined by which teams owns the battles in the trenches. If offensive lines can't open holes for running backs or give their quarter backs time to through the ball the offense is screwed. If a defensive line is owning an offensive line at the line of scrimmage it's going to be a long day. The more you learn about the game the more you'll understand this.

Football is inherently stop-action. A play is dead (why depends on the relevant rules to a situation). To start the next play the players reset the line and the play starts from a dead position. Once dead, further attempts to play are invalid and can result in a penalty if it goes too far overboard. It is more like live-action chess than it is like soccer type football. The stop-action is the reason the game fits on television so well, rather than the game being arranged to fit a tv schedule.
