Slum Village didn't have the commercial appeal. But they had legendary songs, my opinion. Real music lovers appreciate them.

Slum village is One of my favourite hip hop groups. They represented that hood soulful conscious hip hop vibe like a tribe called quest. Ez up, tainted, hustle, climax, fall in love, hold tight, get dis money are my favourite slum songs that I can think of the top of my head.

What up doe?! I remember seeing Slim Village perform at St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit, I lost my voice, and went to work the next day off of three hours of sleep. I was so geeked up from their epic performance. I still listen to their timeless classics. R.I.P. J Dilla and Baatin

I came up in the Detroit underground with these guys and others like the Laswonzs Out, 31 flavors and Proofs group Five elements and it's crazy to hear their story after seeing a lot of it first hand they will always be Detroit legends rest well Dilla and Baatin.

Please revisit the selftitled album that came after Detroit Deli. That album is so underrated. Also, Black Milk definitely deserved a mention, before Young RJ produced solo he and Milk were a duo called BR Gunna. Them alongside Kareem Riggins took over when Dilla left. Them BR Gunna Tapes we’re fire too.

Glad you mentioned that album. That's probably the era for BARS from SLUM. T3 really went to a other level messing his melodic flow with noteworthy lyrics along with Elzhi penning bars to flow more in pocket. All that made for better songs in the post Dilla Era.

Wow that sucks the news about Kurupts album. I actually own it and yeah I thought it was "ok" lyrically Kurupt is always on point but IDK something was missing elsewhere. That album did put out one of my favorite songs. To this day I still blast "We can freak it" that was one of the most laid-back, roll down your windows and ride out, songs ever produced! Battlecat killed the beat.

As good of an artist Elzhi is, the Fantastic Vol 1 & 2 era of Slum Village was perfection. Post-J Dilla Slum Village was good but there’s no comparison.

... I was there... you are right but keep this in mind... Age and peer-wise, Elzhi was a kid... His vibe from the time that he was 15 was always that, of a stand out solo artist... and honestly '7 Times Down 8 Times Up'... end to end Burner but... his real vibe was held back by being in the group (as a solo artist)... Katz couldn't catch his artistry bcuz, as a NEW artist... in a group... El was trying to stick to that SV vibe... it got him on

I never knew slum village went through all of those changes over the years!! I first heard of them at the time they made the song called raise it up amd didn't listen to them again until the song tainted and bought the trinity album which I really liked. Then after the song titled Do you, I never listened to the groups music again!! After seeing this video, I'll have to go and pick up where I left off listening to their catalog!!

I think the industry generally didn't wanna put out such positivity as slum village and the like. There should always be a 'slum village, d12, pharcyde, Dilla, Tribe, Citizen Kane, De La Soul, Madlib, MF DOOM,' place in hip hop. But its more profitable to sell something else than young dudes having musical fun. These dudes my favourite emcees possibly. Made me question the way I like rap. That simplicity and off the dome messing around can be the best thing ever, its so personal and light hearted fun.

I will still forever regret missing one of their last concerts before Dilla passed. I was sitting at a pub in Greektown waiting for the show to start. I eventually realized that I read the schedule wrong. I sprinted from Greektown to the Renaissance. When I arrived, the area was packed, the musicians were pounding their instruments, and the stage was empty.

Just ask Q Tip, Pete Rock, Kanye, Pharrell, DJ Premiere, RZA, Questlove, Alchemist, D'Angelo, Timbaland, The Beatnuts, Just Blaze, and Dr Dre!! Slum is definitely one of my favorite groups and yes they are underrated. We also need to speak on how they always were able pull out stars ahead of time Dwele and then Kanye? Especially back then its not like today where you record and drop the track a week later. A lot had to be cleared so you know they got that Ye verse before that and timing was impeccable.

Heard Fantastic Vol. 2 back in 2000. That along with Blackstar in 1998 and Common’s Like Water for Chocolate was the only hip hop I was listening to, I was starting to become disheartened by the end of the golden age
