Once they get boat limits of chuckleheads, they all get thrown back, which is fine. Sheephead take forever to grow big so that's why they have fairly strict limits. Also, that first ling you had looked a bit short.
@BenjieKimFishing
@BenjieKimFishing Жыл бұрын
Good info thank you. With the ling, for sure it wasn't very big but the captain was sticking his head out the window right above me when I brought that up and he said it was a legal which is why the deckhand tried to snag it with the gaff. Not that it matters now haha.

Thank you for that feedback. I make a lot of "how to" vids but this trip was just straight fishing...which gets old fast (in my opinion). I've been trying out those little cuts because I'm hoping it adds value to some folks who are watching. Whether it's good or not, time will tell and I'll always pivot and try and find what's most helpful and valuable for you guys.

@BenjieKimFishing Totally! I grew up in Cerritos. I was 17 in 1978 and 4 of us would go down to Onofre at 11pm in a Chevy Nova and split a 45 dollar parkin ticket.. then we would commando down the cliffs with gear , beer, and foil and butter, and charcoal....catch giant bar perch all night into the morning, dig a hole and cook the fish on the spot. I wound up in the Army a year later. Awesome times

FYI there is no minimum size limit on rockfish in SoCal. Check out section 28.55(c) of the DFG ocean regs. Thanks for the video!
@BenjieKimFishing
@BenjieKimFishing Жыл бұрын
Wow, thank you for pointing that out. I'll be honest, I've spent the past 20 minutes google searching and reading the CADFG page trying to find 28.55(c). I see references of it on google but I can't seem to track it down on the actual site, nor can I see any wording that states no min size limit for rockfish in SoCal. Not doubting your statement as it's so specific, but I just can't find it right now and I'm too sleepy to keep trying lol! wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Regulations/Groundfish-Summary#south that's as specific as I could get for SoCal rockfish regs.... Tight lines!!!

So when you was swapping fish out for a bigger one. They wasn't just tossing the dead one out for the new one right?
@blndrckr

That's what I was wondering . And what's the limit? Cuz he said this is like #10....
@bringit3164
@bringit3164 Жыл бұрын
@@blndrckr 2 was the limit
@BenjieKimFishing
@BenjieKimFishing Жыл бұрын
Correct - when swapping out the smaller one, the deck hand was simply giving it to someone who didn't have one in their bag. The limit is 2 per person and even though I caught way more, the boat was not close to limits so all the extra ones I caught went to those who wanted it. And looking at my footage, I think 10 was a bit of an exaggeration but it sure felt like 10 at the time...prolly closer to 6 or 7 overall. I hope that clarifies. Thank you for the great question.

Nice fishing! I usually really like your videos this one not so much. I will probably get flamed for this BUT how man y fish do we need to catch and keep when we go fishing? To me this video high lights the sad state of “ Sport Fishing “ today. The commercial sport boats want limit fishing in their counts to promote business. So we have good fisherman passing off extra fish over their limits to other fisherman maybe not s good, but who paid good money and would like t o have something to show for the cost. Thi s has been going on for decades. The DFG had to implement no take reserves to ensure that there would still be fish around despite the extreme pressure put on the fisheries by increased population. Th e diversity of species in near shore waters is pathetic. There are little or nine , sheepshead, cabezon , rock fish and lingcod due to high , constant fishing pressure. Limit are there for a reason. This not put and take stocker fishing but a wild fishery. The video shows there is still some good fishing in the outer waters. I am not against catching MY limit to freeze for later especially if this type of trip is few and far between. So what about catching limits for someone else a less capable fisherman? This is what I have a beef with, How are they going to learn how to fish better if someone else catches their fish? They won’t. What about hooking and handing off? That doesn’t work either they didn’t hook the fish that requires some skill and luck. My suggestion is this after you catch you limit why don’t you help someone who is not doing well by letting them use your gear and rig that is working and coach them on how to catch fish. That would be a win win situation. You use your skill and maybe better gear/ setup to help someone be a better fisherman. I don’t want someone catching my limit on a trip like that. No one should either, but that’s the state of “Sport Fishing “ today. Rant over by one old fisherman.

Hey Mike, some wise mentors taught me that when the heart speaks, the heart listens. Thank you for speaking from your heart...certainly passionate and direct but not disrespectful...and I'd like to think this is a comment that has room for conversation. You'd be surprised the type of comments that come through every once in awhile...filled with ad hominem attacks that leave room for nothing constructive. To keep it somewhat simple...."why don’t you help someone who is not doing well by letting them use your gear and rig that is working and coach them on how to catch fish" That comment right there is a wonderful and practical suggestion that provides a solution to the problem you outline. To be clear, I don't necessarily share those exact same concerns, but I do understand where you are coming from. And because of the manner in which you communicated your passion here, I PROMISE to think about what you are saying here and to genuinely consider changing how I view my sport boat trips. And that quotation that I copied and pasted....that one I will again promise to think about and I think I can certainly do that on my future trips. We don't always have to perfectly agree for us to show respect to one another and foster unity in whatever world we are navigating. Much love and tight lines.

@@BenjieKimFishing Bennie thanks for your kind and thoughtful reply to my rant . At 71 and a native San Diegan I’ve seen a lot of change happen in the ocean. My 96 yo Dad who is still around is a retired captain of aNOA oceanographic research vessel, the “David Starr Jordan. “ My Dad is also a native SD. His whole life was devoted to the study of the oceans and their importance on our lives. When my Dad started out the ships mission was to studio fisheries for the bureau of commercial fisheries department of interior. He did a lot of study of the albacore tuna, and they worked with commercial fisherman to stop the dolphin kill alongside the YF tuna catch. The sardines have come back . They were not around for a large part of my life. Now we see the amazing return of the Blue Fin Tuna . I see the incredible amount of time and money spent chasing and catching them and the great kill of them I want to catch. one. I don’t need hundreds of pounds of fish to sustain me or my family or even friends and neighbors. So watching all of the fish counts is up setting to me. Is it avarice, human pride that drives the need to kill so many fish? It certainly isn’t necessity. God gave us dominion over all other creatures . We must take care of the greatest source of life that sustains us. Our oceans. Sorry for rant two.
