As a plumber I've been in situations like this . I got called out to investigate a sewage smell coming from the crawl space under a house. Didn't even get under the house when I saw the broken waistline apparently had been dumping under the house for years the soil under the house it turned into a mixture of sewage mud I pushed the shovel into it and it went in about 3 feet before I got in real resistance there was no way that I was crawling into that I called the health department and the house ended up getting condemned. Fortunately the the people that live there were renting and we're able to find a new home . The owner was negligent and absent and ignored their request for repairs he got what he deserved .

I had a brief job with a residential company that also does plumbing. I went to school for HVAC and was hired for HVAC. They decided they were gonna keep putting me with the plumber to help him and some of the jobs involved clogged toilets and sinks. Unfortunately, people living like this is not as uncommon as you might think. There was a brief period in time where I thought I'd be a house flipper but I didn't have all the much to invest so I was buying these dirt cheap properties out in Pennsylvania. Literally was buying houses for a couple grand a pop. Well, there's a reason they're dirt cheap because they're ex-hoarders houses. I bought this house out in Mt. Carmel one time. Couldn't even walk through the front door, there was 4 feet of garbage that littered the whole house. Got the story from the neighbor that the lady that lived there was morbidly obese and basically lived on her couch and never left it. Literally, she'd lift the cushion on the couch and do her business right there under the cushion. All the feces and urine rotted out the floor and subfloor underneath and fell through into the basement. I guess it got to the point where it was too much so she started using plastic bags because she was too big to get up the stairs to the bathroom (which was the cleanest area in the whole house ironically enough because it wasn't being used). She passed away on that couch. Took years, but I cleaned it up and fixed it up and rented it out believe it or not. Property manager rented it out to a couple meth heads and they wrecked it on me so I sold it but still made an okay profit on it. The things I've seen and how people live over the years, nothing shocks me anymore. It's sad, animals are living better than some people are out there.

Its crazy and sad how some people live. Trash hoarders are the worst. I've seen my fair share of this working in the RV business. The thing I don't understand is how this is just normal life for some people and how they can bring their trailer in for service with trash and other things I refuse to mention just thrown everywhere. On a side note; I also watch another HVAC channel and that guy was called to house and it was filled with trash. The owner was pooping in a bucket in one of the upstairs bedrooms. I'm sorry but there no excuses for this. At least try to hide your shame before you bring someone in your place.

Never apologize for calling out slobs and pigs. I remember my grandparents telling me about living in the Great Depression in the big cities, like Chicago for example. A lot of people were out of work but, in the poor sections of the city where a lot of eastern Europeans were living, they didn't have much but, their homes and apartments were CLEAN. They would find any old pot or box to put flowers in that the kids would collect. Just so the place looked like decent people lived there. To be called as a bad housewife was just unbearable and it made the husband look bad, as well.
@OneRoomShed

@@BlackPill-pu4vi sometimes I feel like it's a mental issue and that's when I feel bad. Other times it's just laziness and not giving a F. Also sometimes people grow up in a household that was a mess and they continue the trend. I grew up with a kid that was exactly like this. Unfortunately it's was normal for him. My worst customers, 35 years in. I rang the front door bell, the husband opened the door and the thick stench of cat urine hit me in the face, never smelled anything like it. I stepped in, and my eyes started to sting and water, the urine was that strong. I went to the truck and put on a chemical mask, and completed my 15 minute inspection. The homeowners sat on the couch reading a magazine like nothing was wrong. #2...I went to a different house to give an estimate for interior work, and the stench inside the house while standing at the front door hallway was so bad, I declined to enter-- don't even know what it was. I knew if we got the job the crew would refuse to go in there to work. #3... I went to an apartment, and an older lady answered the door. The airborne spore level and stench from mold in the inside air was so high, it was choking, like like inhaling smoke. I couldn't believe believe she could stand it. I went to the truck and put on a mold mask. She told me that no one would sit next to her at church because she smelled to strongly of mold. Water was seeping through the block walls that were below exterior grade soaking the carpet- for years. The landlord refused to pay to fix it and do a clean-up.

Fixed the truck and they invited me for dinner, being polite I said ok and oh my god I entered the trailer and the air was STALE with cat piss. The floors had holes rotted straight through to the ground outside, there was PILES of cat sh*t at minimum a foot high just sitting in the kitchen. Several dead partially eaten cats lay on the floor. No AC of any kind in the 100F + arid New Mexico desert made the smell unbearable, it was inhumane the way they lived. I can still smell it...

Had a few calls over the years like this. One house in particular was so bad (the smell) that I uncontrollably threw up in the guys attic. House smelled like wet cat, feces, garbage and mold. I said I was sick, bailed and told the guy to call another company.

Now we all understand why there is a civilian flame thrower on the market. Anywho... did you at least advise them to burn it down, and collect the .89 cents insurance so they could start anew?

Lol. The insurance would probably give them $5 and a can of gas to start the fire.

People shouldn't live like that, there are resources and organizations that will help them, all they need to do is ask for help. I don't blame you for walking away Curtis, I wouldn't jeopardize my health on a job like that.

All they need to do is ask for help? lol, so naive. "Help" would only come in the form of an eviction and condemnation of the property. Nothing else. I remember when I was a kid, my mother had to swallow her pride and ask the Salvation Army for help, it was Christmas and we had no food, nothing. They straight-up told her "NO, they only offer assistance to people on welfare." They literally refused to help her because she had the audacity to be one of the working poor instead of another welfare statistic. That is just one of many such examples I can give. BTW, today my mother is 64 and making just over $100k a year and she's still angry. She tells the Salvation Army people collecting money to go f*ck themselves when she walks past.

First, I appreciate you for not showing their faces and causing further embarassment. But, I've told people a hundred times, being poor doesn't mean you can't be clean. I remember listening to my great-grandfather as a kid, he talked about how they bathed in a creek and used an outhouse. They had one pair of school clothes that they washed and hung up every night. If they could do that nearly 100 years ago, these people have no excuse to be filthy.

Sparky here, Had a duplex a couple years ago, went to crawl under it and came across a load of needles. Told the owner i'd either walk away, or I was going to do things my way. He gave me the go ahead, and I wired the rest of the one side of the duplex by cutting an access hole in the middle of the apartment. The crawl entrance was like in the middle between the two units. Got the work done, put a piece of plywood back down, all gravy, but I'll never go in a crawl again without looking out for that. Jeeze. Don't blame you at all for noping out of this one!

I used to clean furnaces for the gas company in Minneapolis. Yep, that was pretty nasty but I'm sure you've seen worse. I was cleaning a dryer vent for one lady and pulled out 2 gerbils that were dehydrated with the tail sticking straight out. It was like 2 furry popsicles. The lady says, we were wondering where they went. My favorite call was from a husband who hired his ex-brother-in-law to sand his floors and the guy didn't used a dust collector on the machine. Homeowner was freaking out. His wife was coming back from a week away and she hated the ex-Bro-in-law hahaha. I told him, you be screwed. I had to walk away from that one.

Who was breathing through their mouth when he went inside.... I was! It looked like a homemade walk through haunted house attraction - shut the lights out add a few props - ready to go. Serious throw out the junk / clean it up / paint the floors different colors / bring out your inner artist - it could be kinda cool with not a lot of money.
