31:42 The criticism on the flex is ligitim. Maybe some background: is was designed maybe two years after the first release of the N64Adv, which is designed - and it is still so - to get it installed with a bunch of loose wires if someone wants to go without flex cables in a DIY project. So I went for the solder solution instead of the ffc connector to be compatible with older PCBs out there. But I guess it's time to change the design a bit and go for simple connectors. 🙂

Would be handy to have simple connectors. I can imagine it would be a PITA if you ever have to disassemble the N64 again.

Great video as always! You get to learn and relax at the same time, you can't beat that. I think it would be great if you made a quick shop tour video going over some of the tools you have. Your soldering station video was a huge help, I can only imagine what other insights you might have for those of us trying to build up or upgrade our tool selection. Keep up the good work!

Great mod work! if I was going ahead to make a riser on a 3d printer, I would just make it a full length bracket to provide support across the pcb and create a bumper so it never touches on the opposite screw side.

Great video though I do have a minor suggestion if possible for future videos you could mention the temperatures to use for your irons especially when soldering the flex cables. I know from my experience doing the DC Digital mod and ruined the ribbon on my first try but from your suggestion on Twitter using a lower temperature helped me complete it successfully.

Just to clarify, what you are talking about It is a "Flat Flex Cable" or FFC. A ribbon cable is different.

The DC Digital was a tough one, and it took me a couple tries to get it right. Main problem for me was that, when I had one end of the FFC in place, it was ever so slightly out of alignment with the other chips it connects to. Ugh. Really hard on the soul to undo a flex cable joint that went reasonably well, just to get some other piece aligned.

Just did one of these a couple weeks ago. I found it to be one of the easier mods I've installed. Didn't have the issue with the spacers although I do think the kits solution is a bit janky and agree that it should be revised. By the way, great video. You should upload more often.

I'm not a huge fan of the N64 myself but I kinda wish I had an excuse to do these kinda mods though I'd want to get the proper tools first as I dont think I'll get very far with my dumb ol 40 watt iron without flux, braid or decent proper solder (Basically got the Iron and soldier back in 2008 from Canadian tire to muck about with stuff). Thank you for the usual nice and detailed video! I am looking for a solution like this one for my N64, that is a bit strange. I bought at launch in Japan, one of the really first batch, and for years I used in in RGB by simply connecting the three vias to the proper pin on the output. The image was perfect: proper brightness, no problem whatsoever. Then I read on RetroRGB that using this method, without any RGB amplifier, could cause damage to console. So I tried with three different RGB amplifier but then the image was waaaaay too bright. Is it possible that the really first JP N64 are somewhat different from the later ones? Maybe a solution like this one, that taps directly at the source and not at video encoder, is the way to go for me (no HDMI, since I play on CRT Projector, so analog RGB is perfect).

If your unit is compatible, the basic amp is certainly far cheaper and easier to install. It's mostly down to whether you care about the extra features, for simple SCART output the quality is pretty much identical.

Man, it looks great! And it's not as expensive as the HDMI mod kits. Question, though: Is this the best option for those who have a newer N64 and have an external video processor? I have a Funtastic N64 and an OSSC, and I'd like to have an option that is not as expensive as the HDMI kits. It looks like the N64 Advanced might be the option I'm looking for (in terms of price and features), but since I already have an OSSC, I don't necessarily need the Line Multiplier option it has. Anyways, great job with this video, and thank you for all the invaluable information!

IMO, using an external processor is a much better value than the current HDMI offerings if you have more than one system you'd like to upscale.

Very interesting kit, I was actually considering installing this in my NTSC N64 but for some reason cheaped out on it. In terms of the PAL N64 I'm pretty sure you can also route CSync to pin 3 there, in my PAL system(CPU(P)-01) there was no +12v there but not sure if this applies to every board revision but in that case you'd be able to use an NTSC cable.
