Hey! I'm Indian-American and I've been a longtime viewer of OTV, so when you guys started talking about Indian inclusivity in North American media, I can't even begin to describe how good it felt to be recognized. I obviously only speak from my own experiences, but I'm totally fine (even proud) to be considered Asian, as I share very similar "alienated" experiences with other Asian Americans. There are definitely differences in treatment though- the Western image of India continues to be one of poverty, and that's even if they remember India exists. More often than not, "Indian" only registers to them as Native American, a mistake that Christopher Columbus made 500 years ago but still perpetuates. Many turn up their noses when I eat my lunch without utensils, there's limited restaurant options since I'm vegetarian, and I keep religious activity on the down low. Most Indian Americans don't anglicize their names either, so we deal with the eye rolls and butchered vowels of our names. And of course, these things were always played up to the extreme in the few Indian side characters there are in media, like Raj from Big Bang Theory and Ravi Ross in Jessie. Even movies like Slumdog Millionaire were directed by white people and felt a lot like just more "poverty p*rn." We're getting better with people like Aziz Ansari, Kumail Nanjiani, Anupam Tripathi (Squid Game dude) and Hasan Minhaj getting exposure, and movies/shows like "Bend It Like Beckham" and "Master of None," but there's definitely room to grow. Thank you guys for starting this conversation!

Yess! I feel like indian/south asian people are still looked down on and haven't gained as much international representation /popularity + having darker skin doesn't help, i really appreciate when our east asian allies stand up for us ❤️❤️

So glad toast brought up representation of people from India at 40:18. The thing is the Indian audience would actually be over the moon if they got to see their themselves and their movies break into the mainstream. That is why American/European reaction channels reacting to Indian content is growing exponentially. There is no a scarcity of good content and movies. Also bollywood is a term by which Indian cinema is widely referred to represents only hindi language movies, while there are other Indian language movies that are just as good.

YES!!! John talking about drive through time! No one understands that it's called "Fast food" for a reason I used to work at KFC and we usually get older people for some reason and they like to look over everything and ask question and we would always get in trouble if our times weren't on point. But we also were the best in our state so I feel like that was held over our head too much

@@pia1945 Depends, maybe in the past but it's equalizing in modern times. Jodi, Maya Higa, Jade Ahn all have Asian dads etc. And why I know it's changing is...well, I'll just say I've never been into Kpop, but I've definitely benefited from it's popularity as early as 2013

I'm Indian, and the crazy thing is I didn't even realize most people didn't really think about/consider Indians as Asian until I was around 13-ish. I've always referred to myself as Asian, because I am. Indian representation in media makes me so excited!! Especially when it's done, there used to be a lot of fake over exaggerated accents in television etc. which sucked. I'm Muslim too, so even just seeing a hijabi (headscarf wearing Muslim) in the background of a scene for half a millisecond makes me so excited. I especially loved the TV show "Never Have I Ever", never have I ever seen representation that is actually realistic (in /most/ aspects). I honestly can't think of any other shows with an Indian main character.

Filipino here, tbh I think that is because among asians, Indians do have a lot of unique traits compared to other asians. It's funny because your case is exactly the opposite of us Filipinos that we lack a unique trait and most of us have different looks. We're like the combination of all asians that even I agree some of us looks Chinese,Japanese, Koreans, Indians and etc. Heck, my neighbor looks like an actual Indian from the skin color to the facial hair and he's 100% Filipino haha.

That underrepresentation part is something i've always thought about, being a middle easterner myself. We aren't asian but we're in asia, the government considers us white even tho we're brown. Media portrayal of us is usually just "war/peace in the middle east again."

@@k-rodkev-dog7449 well im a Chaldean from Iraq, and usually when people talk about asians they usually refer to east asians, and like the other guy said, when there's asian on a government form, theyre usually talking about east asians. So while technically i am from asia, im not the kind of asian that people think of when they say asian. Just wish there was "brown" or something to more accurately identify us.

It's really funny to me how Americans redefined Asia to mean East Asia. The ancient Greeks who invented the word used it to refer to Anatolia, the Caucasus, the Levant, Mesopotamia, Persia and parts of the Arabian peninsula. Similarly Africa meant the strip of land on the Mediterranean coast to the west of Egypt.

Like for example Catholicism stands on the old Roman (pope) institution and the protestants had issues with how that institution was run so they split up. Well but and i have never understood the crazy kinds of Christianity that exists in the US. Y'all went wild over there lol.

Another great listen OTV. Toast is a good host to listen to because he puts out his honest opinion on things. Having John as an addition to OTV was a great move and it was a good listen to hear his past experiences before streaming. Keep the podcast episodes coming!

i agree a lot with what toast is saying about including brown asians in the conversation more. i think it's really weird (and this is coming from someone who is half korean and half polynesian and is living in korea) how i see a lot of western countries lump pacific islanders in with asians but leave south and west asians out. pacific islanders don't identify with being asian at all, we're pacific islanders. it's just something i've noticed and i would be really interested to see how other asians and pacific islanders feel (and i mean INDIGENOUS pacific islanders, not just non-pasifika people from australia, new zealand, or hawaii).

Indian's a lot of times consider themselves Asian. But you guys are right that it feels like sometimes it's it's own thing. But I think it's that when people talk about 'Asian' the immediate thought is east Asians. Right now though I think there's a movement with more Asian representation from the south and west like Indians, Malaysians, and Indonesians.

I'm Irish. In Ireland and in the UK, Asian generally refers to South Asians from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Because we all used to be part of the British Empire there has been a lot of migration from South Asia to here. We do have East Asian, South-East Asian and West Asian communities, but they are a lot smaller and generally a lot more recent.

Ayo thanks for talking about us Indians lol I come from the Bay Area which has a huge asian community and like *we* don't even talk about Indians. We have our huge issues but as a whole India is just kind of detached from everything so it doesn't really get talked about or anything. I was ecstatic when I watched Squid Game because that was one of the first times I had seen an Indian character in really any form of media that didn't come from India. We kind of get the same model minority treatment as well so that's fun lol. Personally I feel like the progress "other" Asians get is progress for me but I know that not everyone thinks the same... it's weird man

The viewer question segment where they talked about keeping close with parents really hit, especially Toast’s dream about his mother passing away and him never being able to eat her dish again. I had a similar dream where I was holding my father as he died and I woke up and broke down in tears even while trying to convince myself it wasn’t real, this segment just hit hard.

Got mad PTSD from Masayoshi talking about Starbucks LMAO. Loved working there and my coworkers (thankfully) but it was such a shit place to work at because of management (at least in my personal experience). But I was always in the warming section of Starbucks and I hard relate to Masayoshi talking about treating the drive thru times as a game. I got so fucking good at throwing in food into the oven because I was treating it like a game LMAO.

thank you for talking about "Indians" not being included when talking about asians. as an Indian i feel we should have much more representation. People hail movies(no hate on shang-chi loved the movie) for asian representation but theres almost never any indian subcontinent included in them. we are as toast said brown people and our roles are always the IT guy or the Desi guy. hopefully it changes.

I as an Indian don't usually say that I am an Asian but just as an Indian. This because of how the Western Countries categories different regions and India just has its own category for itself. I can say I am an Asian but people get me confused for an Chinese, Japanese etc. I have seen some repsentation in some dramas like New Amsterdam, the Resident, Quantico but I would love to see more main stream representation.

Personally speaking, Indian representation in NA culture is already growing. Glad to see them speaking about it as I am also a long time viewer of the OTV community and them standing up for it felt really good. But still getting to the point, even though Indian origin peeps are mostly relevant as CEOs or high position individuals in MNCs but in H'wood culture, it's still not that developed yet but hope to see it grow more with the current gen of Asian community as a whole

I believe it's actually from medieval Britain. Peasants often didnt have surnames and where thus called by their occupation.

John's emphasis on guilt with religion is interesting. Idk much about catholicism, but with christianity, trust in Jesus (who He is and what He has done) restores us into a relationship with God and actually frees us from guilt and shame; we don't do good things to be saved, but rather, because we are saved and in relationship with God, we trust God and want to do things His way.

There is a big emphasis on "original sin" in catholicism. There is the belief that those are not saved by Jesus until they are baptized. And from there, the relationship develops but as a kid, there is a good amount of emphasis on the guilt of sinning. Confirmed catholicism (but I don't practice nowadays)

Catholicism is the largest denomination of Christianity... When you're talking about Christianity I guess you mean Protestantism. The difference there is that Catholics believe in the church and Pope's ability to carry the voice of God

Well Christianity in general emphasizes improvement from within which is generally guilt-based, whereas most non-Abrahamic cultures are more shame-based.

Since Toast asked, you can think of Christianity as a pizza. Each slice of pizza (denominations of Christianity Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist etc.) are slightly different but all have the same core ingredients (beliefs). Take it from a pk this is the best analogy I have come up with. Fun Fact: catholic actually means Christian but if you say Roman Catholic with upper case letters and the specification that it a denomination of Christianity.

Thank you guys for the respectful chill talk, The biggest difference between Christianity and Catholicism is that Christians believe that you have to believe in Jesus to be saved and Catholics believe it’s good works
