ML Drums Grit is an expansion pack for ML Sound Lab's modular drum sampler platform which adds a huge sounding full drum kit. The samples were recorded through rare analog hardware chains at Finnvox B-Studio (Helsinki) during the recordings of the upcoming "Blind Channel - EXIT EMOTIONS" album. The drums were recorded with some of the most sought after mics, Neve 1073s/1081s, Pultec and API EQs and the UREI 1178.
ML Drums Grit is based on:
-Gretsch™ Bell Brass 14"x6.5" Snare
-Pearl™ Masters 22" Kick
-Gretsch™ Drop G (1979 - 1981) 13", 16" & 18" Toms
-Zildjian™ A-Custom Cymbals: 14" Hihat, 18", 19" & 20" Crashes and an Ultra-Hammered 19" China.

Wowza - honestly in the moment I felt like I wasn't keeping time very well and almost did more takes. This consists of two takes and the cut happens after the "second chorus" before the toms start again. I played the fills "wrong" in the first take so I took another take for the end bit. Anyways when the video was done and I got to watch it properly for the first time even I was surprised now that I wasn't hearing the drums playing alongside a click track. I thought I did a terrible job not keeping time but I suppose that's exactly what makes it sound like a real drummer. 🙂

Those are the once that took the most time getting dialled in. Going to triplets and staying in tempo was the main challenge for me here... I start leaning ahead of the beat because I'm a guitarist and we tend to do that.

Hey ML Drums ! I have a Starclassic Walnut/Birch drum kit and I always wanted to get back its sound when I play on my e-kit. I have to say I love how you recorded and tuned your drums. This awesome. I just have few questions concerning the articulations and how you manage to reproduce the own feel and play of each e-drummer. I saw you made an update for Hi-Hats with CC controler and cymbals articulation but I wonder If there is rimshot articulation for snares : -What are the articulations available for the snare ? I have to say it is SUPER important for a drummer to keep access to this articulation when playing whenever you want or need it. (rim only is interesting too but it is oknot having it) Is there any cross-stick articulation too ? Maybe, positional sensing is a future feature you could consider too but right now, I need my rimshot on my rim snare zone. - Lastly, How do I control the velocities of my playing and feel behind the kit ? Do I have to use my module or can you adjust the response of your strokes in ML Drums to customize your feeling ? I play on Yamaha DTX Pro-X module, I hope mapping is ok too. Thanks a lot for your time, I admit it would be an instant buy for the whole library you released and I hope you will continue to release new things. If you could release a wood snares "deluxe" with some Tama STAR (I have a Star Bubinga snare, it is my Precious ^^) and/or SQ2 Sonor snares, I would buy it twice !!! Cheers ! Hope to see you soon with your impressive skills :)
@mlsoundlab

Thanks for asking about it! The current snare articulations are main hit and sidestick. The main hits cross over into rimshot territory naturally at higher velocities, but we do not have dedicated rimshot articulations at this time. The velocity response curves are something that we're considering for a future update - we do see the value in having this, but it's not something we have implemented in the plugin at this time. The overarching thing is that we built ML Drums to grow over time. We are a small team, but we're always keeping an ear to the ground to see what the most requested features are. Maximising the resources we have available to us is key to building the absolute best plugin we can. Both the Essentials and Free shells are based on the Tama Star Classic Walnut/Birch kit 🙏 -Kai

@@mlsoundlab Thanks a lot for your responses ! I am definitely buying thoses drums when I am back playing at home, that's for sure. I just need to try to match the sound and velocities to my playstyle first and I am good to go. The kit is tuned pretty much like I tune mine, with the same notes and harmony with the toms. If it can add something to you, the snare is my tuning, mid to high with a Evans G1. And I was struggling with other VSTs to have this sound (SDX/EZX mainly). I am not a sound engineer so I need something good to go within few hours at best. With ML Drums, this seems to be ready to go to my taste, even the cymbals. I hope you will add some few stuff in future updates and expansions but you really have something here with your software, I mean it a lot ! Huge shoutout to your crew and your work ! See you soon :)

@mlsoundlab
@mlsoundlab 8 ай бұрын
For the kits you'll need new licenses, which we're happy to provide if you reach out to us via the contact form on our site. For the MIDI Maps (and other presets), they should be located at /Users/Your Name/Library/Application Support/ML Sound Lab/ML Drums/Presets on Mac, and C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Roaming\ML Sound Lab on PC. Regular presets will end in ".preset", while MIDI Maps will say ".mpreset". -Kai

everything exept snare sounds amazing! this snare is too "bsh" for me, but your snare from basic kit is fantastic!!! by the way, which model of real one did you use recording that basic sample?
@mlsoundlab
@mlsoundlab 8 ай бұрын
The snare is set quite high in the room track really just to emphasize the room sound - turn that lower a bit so you'll get a more normal snare out of Grit. I'm not sure which snare you're referring to but the free ML Drums snare is based on a Tama Starclassic Walnut/Birch. This Grit snare is based on a Gretsch Bell Brass.

@@mlsoundlab big thanx! I love deep and ringing snares, maybe funky, but I use them in very speedy blastbeats. most of all vst snares I love your free one and sonor from Addictive Drums 1. Rest ones from other vsts are crashing in blastbeats and sound cringy as fock. so I`m searching for some real snare for live recordings
