In this book talk video, I dissect a single paragraph of the science fiction short story "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" by Harlan Ellison, first published in 1967. My aim is to explore why it works so well, and hopefully learn some lessons that we can employ in our own writing.
I wish I'd included a summary at the end. My "take away" would be to write with confidence. Don't patronize or underestimate your reader. Don't over-explain. Simple words and phrases, chosen wisely, can often pack a powerful punch.

This was an excellent analysis. The repetitiveness between we and he combined with a peculiar word choice gives this paragraph a sort of poetic rhythm. I haven't read this story but i do own a copy on kindle i'll see if i can read it after work. Lol. More of these videos will be great! There isn't too much line by line analysis on authortube and these type of videos are very useful. Thank you for this video! Definitely subscribed!

I really enjoyed this video and how you broke it down. Also, this story is now on my tbr! Lol It was excellent and even though the portion you read was more tell vs. show, it was done so beautifully. I felt the narrator’s dread and defeat. The words he chose drew in and painted a complete visual. Definite goals as a writer
