That is the problem.....Washington wasn't his only friend. He has his wife, ...who should have been his best friend. She was the one he ended up hurting with this, and the one he never even bother to talk to. Heck, she was the one to save his legacy ...to give him more time. If he couldn't talk to her, Angelica would have eaten him alive, but she would have left him alive. He would have done better to talk to her. The problem ...was Hamilton valued his career more than his family. He thought of them second or third or fourth, but never first and that more than Burr is what killed him.

@@letb5569 True, but he also had reason. If i'm not mistaken, *WHICH I COULD BE*, if he went to court because of the money thing, that would count as treason and if i may quote wikipedia. "Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer *death*, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be *incapable of holding any office under the United States*." So he would either outright be killed OR fined 10000$ and sent to prison for 5 years and the "holding any office under the US" thing too. I'm not saying what he did was right, but between ruining my relationship with my wife and being killed or going to prison, getting fined, and losing my job, i'd pick a ruining the relationship. Again, I might be wrong somewhere but I hope i'm not!

Hamilton is afraid Jefferson and company would ruin his reputation. So his answer was to ruin it himself much more thoroughly than they ever could AND publicly humiliate his wife too. He always had to fight. He always had to win. He always had to be right. His unbending nature is what drove him to be a great man. It also ruined him and led to an early death.

The way Jefferson and company would ruin Hamilton, he could be facing a trial for treason or have some vigilante knucklehead come after him (like Burr did when he eventually got tried for treason and had to flee to the UK for a few years despite being acquitted). There was some logic to it (though mainly it was just Hamilton feeling he had to take control of the narrative to minimize damage).

@@Teknanam Well if it had ever come to a trial for treason THEN it would make perfect sense to come clean about the affair. At that point admitting to your adultery and hurting your wife is the lesser evil. But notice in the song Hamilton admits what he's afraid of isn't being tried as he hasn't committed a crime and has evidence to prove he hasn't. What he is so afraid of is his reputation being destroyed through rumor and whisper. What's really telling is he complains, 'these men won't let go of the scent until they taste blood.' That describes Hamilton to a T. If he decided you were his enemy he would go after you without quarter and would never stop. This is what he did with Lee, this was his attitude towards Jefferson, and later Burr. Now he is expecting Jefferson, Madison, and Burr to be as ruthless and persistent as he's been and it's got him in a panic. It's also hypocritical of the man that he loved accusing Jefferson of infidelities, but then can't handle having people do the same to him.

@@nelsonchereta816 Why would Hamilton want to let it go as far as being formally accused of treason? Most people would rather nip that in the bud before charges are filed. Just the formal accusation can destroy you regardless of trial outcome. Again ook at Aaron Burr who years after the duel, got accused of treason for his activities in Mexico. Was acquitted but became the most hated man in America. People were making effigys of him to burn and threats were coming in his mail. He didn't feel safe in the country anymore and had to leave. Hamilton's concern isn't simply about the affair being known. Beyond the chance of being formally charge with treason for embezzling government money via improper speculation, they can let the rumors spread and multiply until his rep is completely destroyed. His silence could be interpreted in the worst possible way. So Hamilton thought that by getting in front of it all and giving his version, he could reduce the damage. If it were just going to be leaks of his affair, Hamilton might have stayed quiet, but it was never going to just be leaks of him being immoral, but still law abiding.

Also, this is a musical. I've read the biography and irl he didn't publish the pamphlet right away. Jefferson sold the info to a newspaper that published a bad version of the affair, so Hamilton ended up publishing the pamphlet to try to "clean" his name as much as he could telling the story that was already out there in his own words.

@@anonymouscausewhynot IDK if there is anything George can really say to Eliza. He can't take the blame for Alex's mistakes nor can he tell them how they should handle their marriage post-Reynolds. He did however acknowledge Eliza and the kids, saying that he and Martha wish the best for them. And with the letter, he gifted the Hamiltons a Wine Cooler. IIRC, Eliza kept that thing all the way to her death IIRC.

1. Oh my gosh Alex going to Washingdad for advice on how not to *fudge* up his life is just beautiful. 2. (Sorry for the rant, I just need to say this) This provides a lot more information on Alex's internal debate over whether or not he should publish his affair, instead of just him remembering all the times he wrote his way out without thinking about anything else. In this, he's really considering the shame and his honor and how people will react and *WHO HE HURTS*.
