Criminally overlooked. This thing was used for a very long time, up to the Iraq war, where it was gun to tank crews as defensive small arms. Sure, it shoots slower than the Thompson, but this gun knows how to put in work.

A slower rate of fire probably made it easier to handle over the Thompson

Correct ! used heavily in Nam. Rounds per minute is dependent on what ammo was used ,the hotter the load the faster, with limitations obviously.

I was in an army artillery FDC unit in Germany in the 1970's. While we were issued M16A1s (has to be the crappiest weapon ever fielded) we had to train with the M3A1's too. I can't recall exactly why... Maybe for vehicle drivers of which I was one. But, I'd have to say nobody was ever under-gunned with the M3A1 and 1911A1.

1990-91: I was with EWC Team-1 with the 1st Marine Brigade, Deployed to Saudi Arabia just a couple days after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait...while positioned up near the Saudi-Kuwait border, Army mechanized units rolls past this truck stop we had pulled over to buy some stuff, this Army unit fresh in from the states pulled over as well, and to my surprise, a few of the Army guys exiting the APC's and trucks were armed with M3 SMG's....

These need to be more accessible to law-abiding Americans. Oh, & I don't know about the designing, but the Inland Division of G.M. didn't make the M3, it was the Guide Lamp Division of G.M. that did.

-In 1982 in the Malvinas War the Argentine Army used against the English a version of the M-3 called PAM-3 In caliber 9x19mm, this submachine gun was manufactured under license here in Argentina by Fabricaciones Militares (FM) for many years, but the first came along with the M-4 Sherman tanks purchased from England in 1947

The barrel will get hot from the friction, but the bolt is massive and would stay in the rear when not fired, so it should be fine to touch.

The silliest part of the NFA is we viciously prohibit older submachine guns that don't fire any faster than your trigger finger could fire it .. why doesn't the NFA only apply to guns like the MG42..stuff with an incredible firing rate .. Far beyond what a human can fire at

When I was in an infantry unit in Germany in 1978 they gave grease guns to mainly mechanics, and I think soldiers with other noncombat jobs, like maybe cooks. I'm wondering how the M3 compares in range to a Thompson. I know the Thompson has a higher rate of fire. If I was an enemy it would scare me to see all those .45 rounds coming at me. I'm thinking the Thompson probably has a better range, too.

If you can't find an M3A1 to fire in the U.S., you can always fly over the Philippines and visit one of their military bases; the AFP still fields M3A1s (but with integral suppressors and accessory rails) in active combat.

Delta force loved the m3 up until about the 80s, for room clearing because of it low fire rate made it easily controllable and because it wouldnt over penetrate walls, very critical in hostage rescue or HVT live recovery

While the Thompson was heavy and expensive, it was the modifications done to it for WW2 than really made it worse because by lowering the rate of fire it made it much harder to control. In full auto firing, a high rate and a low rate are the sweet spots for controllability But somewhere in between those 2 spots is where controllability becomes an issue. The original Thompson with it's 700 to 800 rpm was controllable on full auto because the high rate of fire was akin to aiming a high pressure hose with a steady stream. The WW2 modification to reduce rate of fire to about 600 made the gun jumpy. Had they lower it even more to about 450 to 500, it would had been better.

History buffs who’ve never fired automatic weapon think the Thompson is an excellent weapon and the grease gun a cheap replacement. History buffs with trigger time on smgs know that M3 is a fantastic weapon that is better then the Thompson by most metrics and is one of the finest small arms of ww2. A marvelous little weapon with no muzzle climb and that is surprisingly ergonomic (relative to it being an angry pipe smg) my only complaint with it are its sights, but otherwise if I was room clearing in France, facing a wave attack at point blank range in Korea or in a denser jungle with sub 150 yard engagements, I can think of few weapons I’d rather have had at the time. It’s a wonderfully crude little weapon!
