Went to Stone Mountain and caught some grasshoppers and Cheffed em up. Grasshopper Catch and Cook. Made Inago no tsukudani (イナゴの佃煮) and they were delicious. They do taste similar to shrimp! y'all try it too before the summer is over.

Here in Texas the locust, ( grass hoppers) , are three or four times the size of the ones you caught. One method used to catch them much easier is to wait for dusk. Then with a headlamp go out into a field, or better yet, get permission from a nearby organic farm. Usually they are happy for anyone to come out and harvest the insects that eat their crops. At night especially if the temperature drops a few degrees. The locust go into a mild torper, almost a hibernation for insects. In this more relaxed state. catching locust is much easier and you won't be needing that net. They will typically stay right where they are and you can easily pick them off the plants barehanded.

In Arkansas, I collected about 15 of them to cook. I prepared no rice, although I am sure that would have been better. I prepared mine with a quick fry and a softer boiling sauce of Soy, Mirin, Chili oil, sugar, Garlic, and Ginger. Actually tasted very much like Shrimp! Very impressive. Next on the agenda are meal worms and crickets.

We just use a large fine web net and swing it back and forth through the tall grass along the edge of a lake or pond. We always get more than enough especially from late may till late summer (Aug). Mostly for fishing and food for the pond fish but we eat them also. The smaller ones are my preferred because the big ones have more guts and tobacco juice. Deep fried and spicy are really my favorite way of eating them. We cook black ants the same way too.

Here in Louisiana we lay out a wool blanket and run around and stir them up. When they land on the wool blanket their sticky legs get caught up in the wool and then all you have to do is pick them off the blanket. I smoke them on the grill and they are delicious that way.

I've eaten hoppers a number of times and ways. I may have to give them another try with this recipe. When it turns fall and the nights get cool, insects get slow until the sun warms them up above around 60°f . As the evening cools off after sunset, they climb plant stalks or sticks. In the morning you can walk along and catch them much easier.

Eating insects is pretty common outside the US and throughout Asia. I've seen some recipes that use termites and crickets and combine it with peanuts or peanut sauce and various spices and it looks amazing. Cool to know I could maybe make some kind of US version if it 🤔
