Wow I can just imagine Elvis in a purple suit. One of Elvis's first performances in a high school in the gymnasium. The conversation with the gentleman who was a senior, Mr. Clayton. He said he would never forget. Elvis got snuck into the building by getting into a window. Tupelo. Mr. Clayton was senior president. Elvis, Scotty and Bill. Then 17 remembered the live performance great to listen to. Pink car Elvis drove. The favorite performance at school that day live and up close. Down to earth. Thank you for sharing this with us. A fan of Elvis for life. Long live Elvis!

Jerry, a man who helped many people in Tupelo, told me this story many years ago. My mother took me to see Elvis in concert in Tupelo at the MS-AL Fair and Dairy show in 1956. The newspaper said "Tupelo Ain't Nothing but a Town Agog." I was 8, and that concert forged my love for good music, particularly Elvis music. I attended dances at the youth center Elvis funded, the same building that is now the museum at the birthplace. There are Elvis stories around every corner in Tupelo. If a city could weep, it wept the day he left us. Janelle McComb, the lady Jerry referenced, arranged a meeting with Elvis and Sheriff Bill Mitchell in December, 1970. Elvis came down with Sheriff Bill Morris from Memphis. Elvis knew Bill and used to sit in with Bill and a band he had when Elvis was younger. Janelle came to my mother's funeral. She wore a giant black onyx cross encrusted in diamonds, a gift from Elvis. We had all Elvis gospel songs for the service, and Janelle invited me to her home afterwards to watch unreleased Elvis footage, her way of doing something she knew would comfort me. She sent the funeral recording to Prisicilla and Lisa Marie to show them "what an old Tupelo-Elvis funeral was like." Mother would have been so happy. Mother worked at the hosptital and she always knew if Janelle was in for a procedure because banks of flowers came in from Graceland. Janelle borrowed a pickup truck on August 15, 1977, to take a load of watermelons and peas to Elvis at Graceland. She never wore jeans, but she did that day. As she was leaving Graceland, she said Elvis said, "Janelle, I don't like you in jeans. I don't want to see you in them again." The last words he would say to her. The next day he was gone. Thanks for posting this and helping to preserve old Tupelo and cherished memories.
