The Pet Shop Boys never went away. Their latest album is "Hotspot". Other albums from the past three decades include "Behavior", "NightLife", "Very", "Bi-Lingual" & "Super". Just because music isn't played on the radio or celebrated in the media doesn't mean it doesn't exist or isn't out there.

To put it plainly, West end girls are rich and proper. East end boys are rugged, poor, working class or "dangerous" types. Like in many cultures, it is the classic story of rich women going across the tracks for "low class" men. For example, much like Princess Leia and Han Solo.

It's more layered than that. 1980s London East End = post-industrial decay and social deprivation, West End = traditional wealth but more importantly for this song it was the glamour, being the benefactory of the 1980s capitalist financial sector boom that saw the explosion of the yuppie culture of excess as opposed to the more sober, dusty old money. True it plays on words conjuring the traditional image of rough poor boy meets glamour girl but it is in fact is about the idea of the lustful draw of escapism and temptation of urban and capital excesses that lead you down the dive bar or a gun against your head (the dive bar is in the West End remember, not the East End ie you think you do not fit in), "no one knows your name" is a clear echo of a feeling of urban alienation brought about the two seismic socio-political shifts London saw in the latter half of the 20th C, collapse of the traditional working class communities during the post industrial decline and those who benefitted from the free market economy boom of the 1980s. The Pet Shop Boys did many other songs about those subjects.

The whole thing about Pet Shop Boys in the 80s is that they stood out a mile. Not dancing around is a conscious stylistic choice, because everyone else back then did. They looked different, they sounded different, their album covers looked different. There was depth to their lyrics that most pop acts lacked, but they still had some big hits, especially here in the UK.

We could debate this all day but all I have to do is look at my own lineage. My daddy was uptown and went down to where the working class folks were and found my Carolina born sharecroppers granddaughter mother. don't sit there and tell me it's always poor women going out gold digging. Rich boys are oftentimes so repressed they have to go find a girl that knows how to have a good time without anybody telling her which fork to use. You kiss my Carolina Mama's rice!

I was stationed in London when they got popular. They would often hang out at Heaven Ultra Disco. The largest Gay nightclub in Europe at the time. Fun!

@@bjhellstream I saw Eartha Kitt in concert there. I honestly didn't know she was supposed to perform that night! Was on the massive dance floor having a blast and all of a sudden she appears on stage with a couple scantily clad and oiled up muscle men. She had a reputation for liking men a lot! Haha! I think she must have had a good buzz on because they practically had to carry her on and off the stage! Amazing fun!

The energy is simply cool calm and collected. The energy shows emotions that cannot be affected. He's cold as ice, he is not simping on anyone. This is one of my favorite alternative rock songs from the '80s. Nice reaction!

The song was inspired by the members love of hip hop, it’d also inspired by a poem called “The Waste Land” and old gangster films. It’s also really deep if you learn of its origins, these dudes were super serious with their love of all types of music, poetry, and films.

I like you and your reactions and have Subscribed but I am glad AT LAST you are actually looking at the video while moving..lol Especially as that has been my wonderful, beloved Home Town that as given me 66 fantastic years. To make me even more nostalgic that Train Station "Waterloo" was near me @ 5'16 and immediately followed by the number 42 Bus @5'18 that went down my Walworth Road High Street in South East London. Moved from there 37 years ago to the safe S E London Suburbs which are lovely but I miss the vibe and buzz and only 2/3 miles from London's West End then!

I loved your reaction. 🖤 The vocalist, Neil, wrote the lyrics for this song in 1984 and it’s social commentary on British morals. Most of their songs were making social commentary. They weren’t just another 80’s pop band.

Yes it's from the 80's. I remember buying the album in 1984. And yes it has been sampled by several artists since. It's about high class interacting with low class. The tough part of London versus the posh area. East versus West. The flat attitude the singer is displaying was very fashionable in the mid 80's. It was all about having the right look and acting detached - aloof - unemotional - disinterested. Some pulled it off better than others. That's what was cool at that time.

Yes, the Pet Shop Boys are always serious. It was a reaction to the groups of the period being so exuberant. If PSB is anything, it is contrarian. The guy who never speaks is actually extremely chatty and loud in real life, but he plays this silent person on stage.

Yes, white gay synth group rap! Recorded in 1983/1984 in New York, as Neil was there on journo assignment. Inspired by T.S. Elliot's poem 'The Waste Land' and the famous socialist history book 'To the Finland Station' by Edmund Wilson. The song was re-recorded in 1985 after they eventually changed manager and label.

That cool, sophisticated detachment was an attitude that a lot of British bands adopted from Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music. Bit of Bowie thrown in for good measure. But yeah, this band was built to last in the clubs.

Although The Pet Shop Boys are classified as a British Techno-Pop duo, this song could be classified as "Urban Contemporary" music. The duo recorded this song twice; once in 1984, and after they changed record labels, again in 1985, and released in the US in 1986. Techno-Pop music artists tend to have a detatched on-stage presence (Eurythmics are an exception), but otherwise, they are emotional like everyone else.

I only know this song from playing GTA V. Heard it one time, while Franklin was getting a lap dance, and was hooked lol. Started playing it all the time as I cruised around doing missions. For me, this song will always be correlated with my memories of playing GTA for the first time back in 2013. It’s nice to see all the comments of people enjoying this song back in the 80s when it first came out as much as I did, although it was much later.

The song's lyrics are about class, and inner-city pressure. Tennant (lead vocalist of Petshop Boys) said that some listeners thought the song was about prostitutes, but was actually, "about rough boys testing to be classy." like rich west end girls. East end boys are rugged and destituted while the west ends girls are rich and classy. Petshop Boys were the first of New Wave rock and begun the syn pop culture in the 80's with this song 𝑾𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑬𝒏𝒅 𝑮𝒊𝒓𝒍𝒔.

The Pet Shop Boys was part of the eighties British Invasion of great music! This was their first big hit in the US! I think the song may be describing how East End boys use West Ends girls because they come from wrong side of the tracks (got no Future, got no past)!❤️❤️

This song is an homage to East Coast Hip Hop. They heard Grand Master Flash and were blown away. This was there turn at London Hip Hop.

I love the Pet Shop Boys, though this isn't my favorite song of theirs. I like Opportunities, and Left to My Own Devices. They also have done some great cover songs, like Where the Streets Have No Name, Go West, and Always on my Mind.
