The audience went crazy BEFORE he sat down because they knew what was coming!!😂 His son Nicholas is following in his footsteps as another great drummer. Phil started as a drummer. But he not only drums and sings. He arranges, composes, directs and produces. He did the entire sound track for the Disney animated movie Tarzan. Check it out (with your kids) if you haven't already. 😊

the songs bout his ex. "you told me you were drowning, i would not lend a hand" the emotions are still as raw and pure as they were before he wrote it. just the pure intensity of his face, eyes, and movements screams he still feels it today. the emotions of loosing his best friend, soul mate, and the foreshadowing of what his kids would go thru with the divorce just thrown out there for all the world to see. i dont know bout yall, but knowing the backstory you can feel his emotions. he taps into it so easily. tells the story of his life and you dont just hear it but you FEEL it. a man who can tell a tale and evoke raw emotions like that is a legend

In an interview, Phil Collins said that he didn't really know what this song was about specifically. He was going through a nasty divorce and some other personal issues at the time. It's mostly just pain, rage, and disillusionment all rolled up into a song. You can hear it in there, too. Even now.

This pos phill Collins was such an anti-Reagan, and this song is a call to arms against Reagan helping bring down the Soviet union. If you don't know about his anti-Reagan stances, watch the video about "Land of confusion." I stopped viewing his videos or listening to his music a very long time ago. He and every leftist marxist who ridiculed, mucked, and protested against Reagan ought to say "Thank You for giving us, the world, a little time of peace. Where it not for Reagan, the USSR would've torched many nations in their quest to stay a super power, as it would've kicked and thrown temper tantrums as it was finally eating from within.

It’s difficult to play the drums and sing at the same time. Phil is unbelievable. I’m 45 years old and grew up listening to Genesis and Phil’s solo albums. The 80’s-90’s and the 00’s were amazing for music. Especially the 90’s.

I was in HS in the late 80s. I used to write "Phil Collins is God! Genesis is All!" on my notebooks. Man it was fun. I've seen a few bands twice including Phil Collins (solo), U2, Aerosmith, Billy Joel, Red Hot Chili Peppers, & Journey.

@@tomking7080 I agree. There was great musice in the 80s, but in the early 90s when I was in college I remember talking about how it felt like we were living in a rock n roll renaissance. It was more than grunge too. I loved the Seattle sound that permeated the era, but there was something about the music industry that cause a tsunami of creativity. Such great stuff. These there is some excellent music, but how often do you hear a guitar solo? How often is there a truly innovative drumbeat drop? It just is not the same. My generation grew up during the rise of rap, new wave, ska, grunge, and more. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I also put half my money away for school when I started working at 12. I put most of the rest toward concerts. I never would have seen so many if Ticketmaster had the monopoly stranglehold in the 80s and 90s that they have on the industry now. It's criminal how they turned crap arena seats into a luxury item. We gotta break up that crap or only rich people will ever enjoy live music.

@@jdice6868 I agree with you 100%. I’m Gen X born in 1977. Man my friends and I went to a lot of concerts in the 90’s. We went to the first lollapalooza here in Phoenix in 1991. Which was my freshman year of high school. We went in 1992,which I think was the best one of the 90’s. It was the Chilli Peppers,Ministry,Ice Cube ,Soundgarden,Pearl Jam,Cypress Hill,Boo-Yaa Tribe,House of Pain,Rage Against the Machine,Stoned Temple Pilots,Porno for Pyros and the Jim Rose Sode Show which was incredible. I had never seen anything like that before. I remember once IceCube finished his set on the main stage you could hear on the speakers coming from the second stage which was a little distance away the beginning to “Hunger strike “ by Temple of the Dog obviously. They were not on the list of bands to play here in Phoenix but since Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were there I guess that it was on. Then you hear on the loudspeakers “Temple of the Dog” on stage two and everyone started rushing over that way. There’s actually a video on KZfaq of this happening. If you type in Lollapalooza 1992 Phoenix,Az Desert Sky Pavilion Temple of the Dog you will be able to see it. We seen Metallica 4-5 times in the 90’s. The funny thing was that Dave Mustaine,Megadeth,was my next door neighbor here in Paradise Valley which is a suburb in Phoenix and Megadeth is one of my favorite bands and we seen them in 1995 on their Youthanasia tour and Korn opened up for them here at America West Arena. That was my first time seeing Korn live but it wasn’t the last. We went to the infamous Woodstock ‘99 because I was living in Boston at the time and we were not far from New York and it was Woodstock man so we had to go and check it out. One of the craziest “festivals “ I ever went to. A good friend of mine was involved with Woodstock so we got all access passes and we’re on the second stage right next to Korn when they came out and if you have ever seen the video of Korn opening up with “Blind” that crowd went nuts and that was the biggest human wave I’d ever seen in my life. I felt like I had vertigo just watching the crowd. It was amazing. But yeah we went to U-Fest,Ozzfest a bunch of times. When I lived in London in 1998 we went to Glastonbury which was insane. Man we had a blast in the 90’s. I love all genres of music besides country. I just can’t get into it honestly. I tried because my wife loved it but it’s just not for me and that’s ok. I grew up on hip hop,rock,metal,grunge,hair metal and the 90’s in my opinion had the best music ever. From The Notorious Big,2Pac,IceCube,NWA,Dr. Dre,Snoop,Wu-Tang,OutKast,EPMD,KRS-One,Big Daddy Kane,Eric B and Rakim,DMX,Cypress Hill,Fugees,Bone Thugs,Tribe called Quest, Roots,Public Enemy,Beastie Boys,House of Pain,Gang Star, naughty by nature,Mobb Deep,36 Mafia,Nipsey Hustle,Ghetto Boys, Souls of Mischief,Luniz,MOP,Compton Most Wanted,Goodie Mob,UGK,Junior Mafia,Busta Rhymes, The Lox, so many more amazing hip hop artists. We had Metallica,Megadeth,Deftones,Tool,STP,Alice in Chains(my favorite Seattle band),Soundgarden,Nirvana,Pearl Jam,Jane’s Addiction,Motley Crew,Korn,Chilli Peppers,Green Day,Smashing Pumpkins,Radiohead (which I have a amazing story about them),Pantera, Cranberries,Oasis,Sonic Youth,Bush,No Doubt,311, Collective Soul,4 Non Blondes,Tracy Chapman,Matchbox 20,Seven Mary Three,Portishead,NIN,Blink-182 and so many other amazing bands and artists. I’m not even going to list all the Pop singers and groups like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC because I would be here for a hour typing. Can you name 10 new /newer bands/groups today that are in the same caliber of the artists/bands/groups we had in the 90’s? I can’t. I’m blessed that I was born when I was and got to grow up in the 80’s-90’s man. Before all the bullshit we have today going on. It was a more relaxed peaceful time and people were not getting trampled on and dying going to a concert. We had crowds that were 5-6 sometimes 10 times larger than the crowds they have today and that shit didn’t happen. That crowd at Woodstock’99 was ridiculous. Definitely the biggest crowd I’ve ever been a part of. That crowd in Moscow in 1991 for Metallica of over a million people,i think it was 1.5 million people,was INSANE!!! But yeah those were amazing times bro. Who are your favorite bands,artists,groups? My favorite rapper is Biggie then PAC followed by IceCube. My favorite bands are Alice In Chains,when Layne died it sucked so bad. I felt even worse when Chris Cornell died. He is my favorite singer of all times. Him and Layne were incredible. Tool is my second favorite band the the Deftones but I’m biased on that because I know Chino. Korn is up there with me. Megadeth,Metallica,Slayer,Pantera are my favorite Metal bands. “vulgar display of power “ is probably my favorite metal album of all times. It’s just so damn good. I love Sublime. “40oz to freedom “ is also one of my favorite records of all time. I can listen to it over and over in which I’ve done many times on long road trips. When people say "wait for the beat to drop" etc this is literally the prime example of that. One of the most iconic songs and drum riffs ever. This is an extended concert version with some extra drums at the end also, which kicks major ass. :)

In 1990 I was at a California Pizza Kitchen in West Hollywood when this song came on. When the killer drum riff kicked in the entire place shook with people beating on the tables and bar in time with Phil. It was one of the coolest group music experiences I've ever had, and I've been to a shitload of rock concerts during my 59 years on planet Earth, starting with Alice Cooper in 1976.

Supposedly Phil returned from a tour and found out his 1rst wife had been having been having an affair and left him. When Phil found out who the guy was he realized he knew him. Phil was the drummer of the legendary band Genesis before venturing into a VERY full solo career...LOTS of great Genesis songs and Collins solo work to enjoy out there for sure!! This was during a very rough time in his life...health, divorce, music, etc...but this one REALLY hits with his divorce...and I'm sure his ex-wife HATES how popular it's become...it's TRULY an exceptional song!!

I was going to say the same thing. The song was his release from the pain and turmoil of his life at the time. He said the song became very therapeutic during that time. He mentioned in an interview that he could just sing the song and it would relax him. He said he feared what would have happened if he hadn't gone the route of writing.

I saw the first-ever Top Billing performance by Genesis in 1972 after the original Top Of The Bill " Bell 'N Arc " disbanded. It was at the 3,000 venue Croydon Greyhound Pub/Venue in South East London England very near where David Bowie, Peter Frampton and Status Quo were born :)

This song was SO different from anything else playing in the 80s...sparse and chill. This is an excellent late-night driving song! Similar to how I felt when Prince released When Doves Cry in the 80s.

@@Silvaria928 In The Air Tonight and I Don't Care Anymore are a set of bookends that chart the end of a marriage to the point where "I just don't care about you anymore". I know Phil must have had a really rough time going through that whole "situation". Just glad he came out alright!

He was the only person that played in Live Aid in 1985 in Wembly, and then flew by concorde (the supersonic airliner that took 3 1/2 hours from London to New York) and played in Live Aid in Philadelphia the same day!!!!

Phil was a big drummer since the age of 5. He as always the drummer in all the band he was in. When the lead singer left, Phil stepped up ! What a talented man !

That was definitely a _unique_ reaction. 🤣 And it's not unwarranted! People who aren't familiar with Phil Collins don't know the power he could bring to those drums. He's been banging those skins for longer than I've been breathing- and I'm 45!

Loved your reaction when the master sat down to his playset! That particular song, with that particular drum attack, is one of the signature drum songs of that entire era. And Phil is one of the greatest drummers of his entire multi-decade run. For several years he and his band(s) were the greatest thing going. Then fickle producers began to tone-down his label, tired of seeing him winning music awards (and thus, with more horsepower, able to set his own price), toning him down because it was his mastery that was leading the crowds instead of the studios. Tom Petty had a lot to say about that same, twisted studio mentality that silenced real artists, automated radio air-play, eliminated D.J.s, and ultimately destroyed some of the better artists post-1980s and all because of studio and label GREED. Give the music back to the artists. The producers may do a lot to push the sliders and massage the layering of tracks and loops, but if it weren't for the original artists themselves, not a blinkin' one of 'em would ever make a dime.

First heard this on a tv show Miami Vice. 2 undercover cops were on their way to a drug bust and he thinks his cover has been blown. It was so cool driving his corvette to the meeting and this song was playing.

Phil Collins had mentioned that this drum breakdown was I believe the first of 24 different breakdowns he recorded. He said as a drummer he was trying different variations to see which one fit best, and it ended up being that one.

The funny thing is Phil has stated that the words we're gibberish they were just to hold the beat and the time of the song as he was writing it and never got around to changing it he says that if you know what the song is about then you're one step ahead of him and if that's not strange enough the drum fill almost never happen the beat was meant to just come back in but Phil being a drummer had to mess around with it on that take he said if it was the take before it would have been something different if it was the take after it would have been something else they just happen to use that one take and create what is arguably the greatest drum fill of History if that's not mine blowing enough Tecate beer isn't even from Mexico it's made by Heineken and brewed in Holland🤕

That's a great song, but depressing. There were a few years where I simply could not listen to Another Day In Paradise, Everybody Hurts, and the Johnny Cash version of Hurt. Some songs are just THAT GOOD at dredging up emotions.

Phil is one of the most iconic performers of the latter half of the 20th century, starting as drummer for the legendary progressive-rock band Genesis (and later, lead vocalist when Peter Gabriel left). To hear Phil as vocalist and drummer for Genesis when they were still Prog, check out “Dance On A Volcano” from the album A Trick of the Tail.

I've been listening to this song since it was released in 1981. It NEVER fails. The very powerful percussion kicks in and I still get goosebumps! In The Air Tonight is one of those songs I've never gotten tired of hearing. Loudly!
