I work as a radiologist in the USAF; specifically, I work in the Nondestructive Inspections Laboratory. Hearing .2mR/hr and then 2.0 mR/hr is crazy. That is the exact hourly maximum we can receive during emergency shoots un unshielded environements and in less than a week you would receive the same amount of radiation as a year of 'usual living' (~600mR). 21 mR/hr is absolutely massive. Less than thirty hours to receive an annual dose. 200, 400, 800 mR/hr? I don't think you'd just walk away after a serious exposure to radiation of that dose--and most protective equipment would not be able to handle this manner of dose. Anything prior would be likely Radon, but at that level.. that sounds closer to exposure from a direct source--is this some kind of radiation disposal hidden in a residential neighborhood? That wouldn't explain the cold. If anything, it would be very warm. 1000s, 10000s? Typically 15,000 mR total dose causes a 5% increase in cancer rates, but that is over a long period of time. 200,000 mR is typically a threshold for fatal 'acute' doses. 377,000 mR/hr is just unrealistic. He would not have survived at that dosage for more than thirty, fourty minutes at best. That is almost the average dosage of the Lorad LPX 160 Radioactive Excitation tube at 4.0 mA of energy--which is a direct source of excitation at extreme power levels--used to expose film through several inches of steel, or aluminum. That's just crazy. Kid's boned, and it wouldn't matter if he was covered in any manner of bubble suit. Well, sort of, it depends on the type of radiation--which a simple geiger counter couldn't differentiate. If Alpha radiation, perhaps that would work? If Beta, Gamma, perhaps even Neutron, no. My guess is, he was using a Victoreen survey meter that was actually measuring in μRem (Micro rems) which would make the story much more plausible, even if a peak reading of 377,000 μR/hr (37,700 mR/hr) would likely have given the man fatal doses down the line from complications thereafter. An interesting read, about a creature which is a massive conduit of radiation.

This story is beautiful in its slow, quiet, bleak brand of ominous fear. It knows you're scared of it, and doesn't need shock and awe to prove it. No, it takes its time in slowly, carefully building a world that, while it is far richer than a mere scare tactic, is indeed terrifying and leaves the reader feeling small in the face of a threat that, because it is impersonal and does not specifically shock you, feels far bigger and greater than simpler horror monsters. The reader is left feeling hopeless and doomed, eclipsed by a cold darkness that is far harder to cultivate than mere shock at a jumpscare or gross-out. It is uncannily brilliant.

**SPOILERS AFTER "READ MORE"** i'm gonna explain the entire story for people who don't understand it, so again after clicking "read more" you'll be exposed to ever spoiler imaginable for this story, you've been warned!! Ok so the guys dad, I'll call the guy anon, when down into the spiral to check things out after anon and his brother pointed the spiral out to him. He walked all the way down the spiral and when he got to the end, the shape shifter choked him with the Christmas lights. this allowed the shape shifter to take on the form of a human and leave in the form of anon's dad. The shape shifter is what gave the mom the intense cancer. Anon decided now that he owns the house that he'll explore it too. he discovers it's a fibonacci spiral (look it up, it's basically a mathematically perfect/flawless shape portion) and in the final room of the spiral (the largest where it is snowing) he finds his dads dead body, left there after the shape shifter choked him so that he could take his form and leave the spiral, where he is trapped. this explains why anon's hands were sticky after investigating the hatch as a kid, because the shape shifter resealed it with some type of glue or epoxy, and it was still fresh. Because we can presume the shape shifter is *extremely* radioactive and was in the spiral for so long, that's why it was so intensely radiated, but anon's dad was preserved because of the sub zero temperatures. to put the temps into perspective, it was colder in the spiral than it ever was in antarctica in the 2017 winter months. anon became extremely ill with radiation after going into the spiral, and when he came out after walking for god knows how long (probably well over a few hours because of the 4 mile marking, and how he very very slowly had to make his way back) he was already well past the point of no return. he decided to go back down into the final spiral quadrant to be with his dad mainly because he knew if he stayed around and seemed help, it would prompt an investigation into the tunnel resulting in the deaths of however many people would've gone down. this also explains why he was so adamant to his brother and his friend to keep out, because he knew what would happened, except he made it out to tell others, unlike his dad. so his "suicide", even though he would've died anyways, was just to preserve his brother and friend so they and no one else wouldn't suffer the same fate as him. so in the end anon was just trying to save as many people as possible, which is why he told his brother he'll never find his body and to do NOT go looking, as well as to immediately sell the house without any investigation into anon's death. hope this explained the story

i don’t think more people would have died though, if the gouvernement would have looked into it, they would not only get the chance to catch a shape shifter, but also investigate the tunnels with definately more advanced equipment or robots for that matter and get to the bottom of the spiral’s origins instead of simply ignoring it
@bigmon1522

electronics probably wont work down there, and if the robots worked and they brought up the equipment they had down there, the equipment would have been exposed to radiation and it could end up spreading from robots-humans and whatever else it contaminated. Its government btw lol

lil bacon - Thanks for that! I have some questions though, what are your thoughts? • So are we saying that the reason his dad changed, and became mean and such, was because it wasn't really his dad, it was some shape changer? Is that why it didn't remember he was called Scooter? The monster got really mad at them when they played around the door, but that was when they were kids, right? So how old were they (approx) when dad died? I wish he had discussed his dad's age upon seeing him in the cavern. • If so, then why did it get so protective of her after Mom got sick? Why did it stick around and parent the kids? Why did it feel guilty about the mom and want to help her? Why didn't it just take off? • I thought he said his dad died shortly after his mom. Did I miss a part about a missing body or something? I don't get it. If his dad was really the shape shifter, did it fake its death or something? Did they mention not finding a body and I just didn't hear that part? If the shape shifter stuck around to parent the kids for all those years, why would it pretend to die / bail on them after the mom died do you think? • How did he come to the conclusion that it was out there wearing his dad's face? • If he was living with the shape changer, how did the kids not get sick too? Had they already moved out or something? That's a glaring one for me - if he was around for as long as he was, how in the world did the kids not also get sick?? • When do we think the dad actually died? • Can someone explain that part about him calling the old house owner lady, and her remembering the dad coming by? And saying his full name including the last name? What does that signify? • Any ideas about the monster's motives? Thanks!!!

The idea of a burning realm ruled by red demons being hell to most Americans is something so perplexing to the Orthodox world. Normies don’t or can’t even begin to understand what Christianity’s actual claims are, so I guess it’s no wonder they continue to believe and say the most intellectually deprived tropes and phrases imaginable.

i know its been 10 months but here's how i am sure it goes: there was something down there, a shapeshifter that took the form of his dad after killing him. it presumed the life of his dad. the thing killed his dad and pretended to be him. the thing is radioactive of course, due to where it had been for presumably decades. the thing slept next to the wife of the man it killed. its radioactivity obviously effecting his mom. killing her. the thing probably felt sorry. for killing the parents of two children. staying by the moms side until the end. thats why he felt his parents marriage wasnt exactly right. the mom felt as though something was off about her husband. great story imo. made me put the pieces together

Patrick Holensaber Some of the best are the longer ones. The "Search and Rescue" series tends to be amazing. "Penpal" is an utter classic that will leave your jaw hanging open by the end. Mind you, the whole series is hours long. I also recommend "Bedtime", though I don't think MrCreepyPasts read it. CreepypastaJr did though. "Bedtime" is a series, but the first is really all you need. It's self contained.

The Ladder is the 4th entrance of The Tomb of Horrors. At the bottom if you move the toilet by turning it counterclockwise it will slide revealing a crawlspace just big enough for a person to squeeze through. Once you wiggle your way through you will come up into what looks like a box but if you feel around you will find a latch. Once opened you will come out of a bench in the back of what appears to be a Chapel. You are now in the Chapel of Evil. Be careful about messing with the other benches as they hold gas traps.
