Wanna know the best part of all of this, Bellular? You've barely scratched the surface of what the game has to offer. You still need to unlock, and run: 12 Alexander Raids + 3 Shadow of Mhach Alliance Raids from Heavensward 12 Omega Raids + 3 Ivalice Alliance Raids + 3 Optional Trials from Stormblood 12 Eden Raids + 3 Alliance Raids + Optional, Endgame Dungeons from Shadowbringers Not to mention running/clearing all of the Savage and Ultimate difficulty content-- all of which have rich, fully fleshed out stories and AMAZING fights that are completely, wholly unique from the normal mode versions, even offering new/different enemies, cutscenes and music scores.

Well tbh, he's just scratching the surface of the game since he's been pretty much "banned" by the others from doing any of the side-content, which many times are good enought on their own to consume many hours of playtime. Not to mention he haven't probably even started to explore the other jobs, crafting and the whole game-mode called Blue Mage. He basicly have hundreds of hours of "evergreen content" to delve into for the full experience... So he ain't quite "there" yet, outside of the story part.

Speaking of Ardbert's voice acting, I just remember the extremely angry/sad "We did everything right, everything that was asked of us and still it came to this!" done so well back in 3.4, and then it was so huge to find out what that everything was. Also when it dawned on me when he was like, "Oh god you can hear me", I was so sad. That would really suck to just be a ghost in a world you tried so hard to save

Emet talked about his utopia, and how you wouldn't remember it - but the whole design of Amaurot really brings up a sense of nostalgia, which people have pointed out stems from the architecture of the city. Our characters, born to a world just industrializing do not recognize the city, but we do - the architecture is Art Deco - a form popular just prior to World War 2. New York City and a few other older cities have buildings with the style. The whole DMV thing helps cement it - the city and inhabitants could very well be an illusion crafted by Emet to bias you, but the imperfect bureaucracy just slams it into you that perhaps this place truly once existed.

This was SUCH an enjoyable watch - you really hit the nail on the head with your comment that FF14 has such a voice, a strong identity. This dev team has "it" & have honed their techniques over many expansions, learning from mistakes and always listening to their players' desires. FF14 has been a refuge for me as well in dark times, so to see you echo that sense of appreciation...:) its very wholesome, i honestly can't help but smile:) it's one of the things that binds this community together, this shared experience of story that we're all (well mostly all ;) ) so invested in emotionally. to me that sort of deep immersion, the kind that can make you happy when everything else is wrong, well what gaming's all about. thanks for keeping me company in my 2000+ server queue xD off to watch that patch reaction now! Btw, if you get stuck in a queue, consider watching the FFXIV Official channel's video about the 'making of SHB'. its big spoilers for those who didnt finish but of course, you're safe to watch it now)

To be honest, I think saying that Shadowbringers was "written by competent people" kinda downplays how good it actually is. I think there is this misguided notion that WoW players were a bunch of deluded fools who never played any other game. I played WoW for a very long time. I also played a fuckton of other games, mostly JRPGs. Shadowbringers is just really, really good, not just compared to WoW (being "good" compared to Shadowlands isn't all that impressive) but as a game. So I don't think Bellular is gushing over this expac because he was a poor, quality-starved WoW player. He was gushing over it because Shadowbringers is the best content ever produced to any MMO. Is a top-tier RPG experience.

There’s one major character you forgot to discuss: The Warrior of Light/Darkness themself. Shadowbringers did something that I have never seen in any other MMO before, including XIV up to that point. It made the player character the protagonist of the story. In ARR and Heavensward Alphinaud is the protagonist of that story, the WoL is just along for the journey. Lyse (and Hien to a lesser extent) is the protag of Stormblood. But ShB is, at it’s emotional core, about what *is* the WoL, what makes them a hero, and what beyond that makes them special in this world? And the exploration of that theme continues through the patch content in a brilliant way, to the point that there is narrative justification as to why *you*, the player character, are the most important person in this story.

As a truly hardcore FF Fan and not so great Fan of FF14 (still playing it for the story, sure, but more out of completionism) overall you can't compare it to mainline FFs. Too much storytelling is way too generic and cookie cutter anime to be praised as exceptional and that just stems from the fact that sooo much is boring filler like in a drawn out anime series. Making a story long doesn't make it good, but I see it was necessary to create enough content for the MMO genre. That being said, I am excited for Endwalker, because storytelling did improve by a lot it sure got me invested enough to care, but it is FAR off to become "the best" Final Fantasy, because you just can't compare apples to oranges. Best MMORPG story is good enough folks.

Here's an experiment for you to try! Watch a scary movie, and turn all the sound off during parts where a jump scare might happen. You'll probably find that the scene is no longer nearly as scary. It turns out that music is fundamental in establishing the emotion or gravitas of scenes, and that is true no matter the medium it is in. Music is primordial, eternal, a pattern in the void of randomness that assaults our other senses. It can make you feel pain, longing, happiness, anger. It can make you hyped for an epic battle sequence or cry during a character death. Sound is the first sense we are born with, as babies have shown to enjoy music and people talking to them even in the womb. Video games have always been quite lovely in the music department. Would Mario really be Mario without the happy, popping beats? Would Zelda Ocarina of Time been as memorable without the Ocarina or the memorable songs? Final Fantasy has always had great music that is used to lift up the story and pair with it. I'm glad you've awakened to the realization that Soken deserves the praise he gets :D

The Thancred vs. Ran'jit fight is a masterpiece of storytelling. If this had been the WoL/D vs. Ran'jit, it would never have worked, because this was set up so beautifully to be Thancred's fight. They made the stakes for this fight personal. Both of these are father figures to Minfilia, current and previous. Both of these men feel guilt because they feel they let past versions of her down. Ran'jit is broken by probably decades of war, and wants to see Minfilia safe and happy in what he sees as the final days. Thancred wants to see Minfilia be her own person, to see her grow, to see her prosper, even though he knows that doing so will mean his Minfilia will be gone forever. Resolving that inner conflict and letting himself finally grieve is just a part of what makes this fight great. The fight itself is between these two fathers of the same young girl. This fight is personal. The stakes are personal, and their goals are fundamentally incompatible. No words or compromises exist that can prevent this fight. One will walk away with what they want, and the other will have nothing. The fight is inevitable, and they will both give everything to see it through. It's a masterpiece.

What I really love is how the zones in Shadowbringers mimic the zones in ARR but with slightly different twists. The Rak'tika Greatwood is Gridania and the Black Shroud. Kholusia is La Noscea. Ahm Araeng is Thanalan. They're familiar enough (forest, ocean, desert) to make us go "Hey, this feels familiar!" but different enough that we can instinctively tell it's a completely different world that is connected to the Source. They perfectly nailed that feeling of being on an alternate world, and it helps sell the whole story just because they went for that "similar but different" feel.

Ascian DMV got me in tears, not only because how ultimately sad the whole story is but also just crying because we got such a TREAT... mostly being able to explore what it was like for them in the days before the sundering, to walk this city, to talk to the npcs there and casually learn about their lives and worldview. I did not expect at all to get such a big serving of lore and when Our Old New Friend was talking to us I was beyond elated and moved.

Ah yes, the near incoherent ramblings of someone recently completed Shadowbringers - love it! Being more serious though, I doubt there is many people who followed the story and didn't think that moment where Ardbert passes you his axe and the guitar kicks in was just absolutely perfect. Been over two years for me now, and while a lot of the more minor stuff is no longer clear in my memory, the final part after arriving in the underwater city will never fade. The patches since have kept this high quality, when you think for sure it has to get worse...so can definitely understand why hype for Endwalker is so high. Good luck to YoshiP and his team, and hope it is as good as we all hope!

**5.0 Spoiler Warning for those who haven't done it** There's a couple neat details they pull at the end: Emet-Selch stops slouching at his end. Up until the time you fight him, he's always hunched over (to the point of earning a nickname 'Emet-Slouch'). After that fight, before he fades away, he's standing upright. This is because he has judged you worthy of carrying his burdens, and thus dies at peace. Ardbert's axe loses its bloodstain during that sequence, after he merges with you. This is also Ardbert moving on from his past--he no longer has figurative and literal blood on his hands for what happened to The First and to his friends. Ardbert blamed himself for the Flood, and moreover, when he and his friends travelled to The Source, they did so by giving their lives...and Ardbert was the one who killed them all, then himself. The fact that the dev team and writers have the thought to put in these little pieces of symbolism shows how much they actually care about even the little things, and yes, NOTHING in FF14 is irrelevant. If it came up in an MSQ, then...it's important. Expect loose threads as far back as ARR to come back in Endwalker.

i was always fond of the foil between ardbert and emet. you see two characters who have lost everything they love, willing to destroy worlds to save what they knew and overcome with immense grief and survivor's guilt. come the end of shadowbringers, you see ardbert learn to forgive himself and heal, where as emet up until his final moment hangs onto his pain out of fear of forgetting; the result being ardbert becoming more complete as a person, and emet leaving with a literal hole through his heart. there's a lot of deliberate, yet nuanced, detail in the writing that is so commendable.

Also, I don’t know if many people noticed this but the ending is a direct reference to Persona 5’s original ending. Fighting a literal god above a city finally piercing his abdomen with the final shot, the god realizing mankind’s potential, the rays of sunrise and the camera going through emet’s chest hole.... Yoshi-P was literally praising P5’s UI in a past interview, and I think they took great inspiration from it. He was also a bit hesitant about saying anything about P5 when that question hit.

The best japanese storytelling I've seen in games or anime usually focus a lot on character development and the death of a character isn't just in vain, they choose who to kill based on which character "needs" that death to "grow up", Lyse and Papalimo being the example on this, but a lot of other JRPGs and animes also use this plot device (Naruto and Jiraya, Asuma and Shikamaru, Edward/Alphonse and their mother, the list goes on) Also, Bellular seems like a person who's been imprisioned in a padded room for a decade to the point his senses were numb, now he has been released and became another man after feeling the smell of fresh air, tasting good food, etc. "What a present to be alive!" instead of "Oh God Blizzard stop stepping my source of joy".

As a longtime player of Final Fantasy XIV, there is something about the game that makes you wanna share it. To see people's first time reaction to these big moments. That kinda started with the end of ARR, where they kicked the story off the standard fantasy story rails, scooped it up and sprinted for the deep dark woods and never looked back, while we were trying to figure out what the hell just happened. All of these new players from WoW have been such a massive hit of that, and especially all of these incredibly talented and passionate content creators that came to give our game a try. Indeed. I actually spotted clues that Amaurot wasn't perfect despite Emet-Selch's rose tinted recreation of it. Namely: 1) There's bureaucracy to prevent the realization of dangerous creations. 2) There were side conversations where the spectres talk about having to keep their inner darkness at bay to maintain social harmony. My conclusion: Amaraut may have been a paradise, but it's one that the Ascians had BUILT by overcoming their darker impulses and creating traditions to reign them in. And the Ascians have NO IDEA how to truly recreate that society because it was so much ancient history to them. Their method in the current day story basically amounts to, "We do it my way, and kill everyone who disagrees." which is pretty much 180 degrees backwards from how pre-Final Days Amaraut society worked and would never recreate their paradise even if they did get as far as resurrecting everyone who sacrificed themselves to summon Zodiark. Nope, the logical end if the Ascians had been successful would have been a tyrannical empire of immortals whose first response to any problem is to kill people to solve the problem. And anyone who so much as questions this set up would be used as Zodiark fuel for fear of someone creating another Hydaelyn. Which would of course push some cabal or other to do just that simply for self preservation reasons. The Ascian plan was NEVER going to be successful.

Thancred doesn't "have a thing" for Minfilia. His feelings for her are more along the lines of a father or older brother, due to him feeling responsible for looking after her. The character moments between the scions are great too, you see more of the twins interacting with each other (anything happens to them in endwalker....) but the moment that felt the most.. like these people are a family from differnet places to me was in the greatwood, where y'shtola asks uberdanger to describe the sky to her because, of course she can't actually see it. @@moonmoonluna there is a significant difference between "liking" a villain in a game and liking a real life fascist. being immersed in a fantasy world also means (to me at least) that the rules of reality do not apply. there are no ascians in real life. there is no all-powerful immortal race of super-human beings in the real world. what you call fascism doesn't apply because fascism is between equal beings trying to dominate each other. that's not the case here. ascians, or the ancients, are in charge of creation of life. it's not entirely absurd that they believe they are also in charge of destroying said life. emet-selch is a well fleshed out character with a purpose that is understandable and makes sense in itself. that's what makes him likable to me. from his standpoint it is pretty surprising that he even bothers with trying to get to know and understand us. i'm sick of people not understanding that we're not in the real world here and your everyday political views have no place in this.

Everything he says about current people being inferior is basically him being in denial over it and struggling with the sunk cost of all his millennia of efforts. Also "people are like livestock to (insert higher power)" is dumb and doesn't make any sense (and fortunately isn't a trope that actually exists in FF14). The slow planning is key to good MMO storytelling. That horrible moment with Tesleen when that white goo covers her face? They shock that into your mind to make you remember how excruciating it is to be converted to a sin eater. Then at the lowest point of the story, right before the climax, your character is overwhelmed by the Light. What does he do in that last moment? He spits up that white goo onto the ground. The player automatically thinks of Tesleen and is panicking because the subconscious part of their brain that is repulsed by things like body horror is actually scared for their character. It's the closest you'll ever get to fearing for your avatar's existence in a MMO. Not more than a few seconds later, you get the Ardbert's question and then the climax of the story. It takes you from Nadir to Xenith in less than a minute and it's perfect. Not just "good for video games" either.

The way shadowbringers makes you feel ABSOUTLELY hopeless is stellar. You are fighting a loosing battle. EVREYONE at the start says it's not possible. Evreyone tells you to give up and yet you push forwards and you manage to fucking do it....and then...evreything goes to shit after Rak'tika. You see Lyna break down which was such a powerful, yet short moment (I'm shocked you didn't mention it, it's what made Lyna my favorite side character in the whole game). And yet you go forwards. You kill Innonence....and then you know you're the doom. Then you realize your folly. And yet now, after all you've done, evreyone holsters you on their shoulders to push you forwards. Because you can't give up. Because if you do, two worlds are doomed. And yet the depressing atomsphere goes on. You go into Amaurot and finish it. Emet kicks your ass and all truly seems lost, but hope glimmers at the last second and you stand up with the conviction of two whole worlds standing behind you. Shadowbringers was never about playing the hero. Shadowbringers was about fighting because you want this world, and yours, to survive. And in the end, to me, that's what gives you the strength to finish the fight. Because a lose is not an option. Shadowbringers shows you that you, the warrior of light, is not invincible. You're the slayer of gods, ender of wars, and liberator of nations, yet at the end of the day....you're human. Even the music adds to it. The pre-freed Kholusia music is depressing and shows toil. the desert (I cannot spell) shows that these people are scorched endlessly by the blistering sun as they toil and work to stave off the sin eaters. I honestly think the purpose of shadowbringers is to humble you. ARR is about the start, building up a world and setting it all up. Hevansward is about ending a war so that Eorzea can be fully unified again. Stormblood is about fighting for freedom and standing up no matter the odds. Shadowbringers is about showing you that you're human. You're weak. And by doing that, and doing it in a belivable way, they avoid a very obvious video game protanist trap of "You're invincible! You'll always find a way to beat your foes! You know you'll come out on top because you're the warrior of light/champion of azeroth/the hero." But shadowbringers makes you genuinely question that and remebering that....that is powerful.

And more, I know that from all Shadowbringers characters Masayoshi Soken identifies the most with Lyna. And that just makes it even more powerful. And then, go visit F'llahmin where she's sitting in the restaurant above Rowena's House in Revenent's Toll. Also many of those lvl 80 quests, while brief, are amazing. Dark Knight, per usual really, stands out for how it has you interact with your darker side once again, but I feel most of them bring something to the table, either as lore or showing the progress that has been made. A few standouts for me are: The Summoner quest which largely explains how the Source has been dealing with Primals in your absence and setting up some stuff that happens later in the MSQ. The Scholar quest sees you use the experiences gained to finally make some real headway in curing the curse that the Scholar story revolves around.

Well *that* was quick! Michael's really tearing through the MSQ! One thing I'd like to see is the Bellular team's opinions on the difference in storytelling between Heavensward & Shadowbringers. In your post Heavensward video, there was a lot of talk about how the Post ARR patch quests took a lot of time laying the ground work for Heavensward, introducing characters, settings, & plots, all so that Heavensward could hit the ground running. But in Shadowbringers, the opposite can be said to be true. With only a handful of exceptions, the setting, conflicts, and characters are all new in Shadowbringers. You don't know any of them till you land on the First. All of this has to be filled in during the MSQ. Somehow, the dev team has worked entire emotional arcs into the expansion, with minimal pre-set up. They make you care about everyone and everything, in a much smaller space of time. And none of it feels any less grand.

I mean, people would hang out at various checkpoints to say hello and just listen to the music. I specifically walked around that final city for probably an hour just to take in the sights. I mean, the dude walked into my party, insulted me and everyone I cared about to my face then stripped two of my closest friends of the only part of their Sharlayan heritage they actually gave a shit about and walked off like it was nothing. Mans lucky I haven't knocked his teeth down his throat already.

The structure of 5.0, the early chapters in particular, are quite brilliant. Alisaie's intro chapter shows (not tells, shows) what the excess Light does to individuals; Alphinaud's shows what it does to whole societies. It's such a great way to explain what the Light is doing to the First, why it's bad, and why you must stop it. Only after those things are firmly established do you properly set out on your adventure to reunite the Scions and put a stop to Emet-Selch's plans.

I hope we can say “it keeps getting better” in Endwalker the same way we did for Shadowbringers

I haven’t played WoW in years so I’ve had no idea who some of you guys (wow streamers) were before now, but I’ve really enjoyed watching you guys enjoy a game I’ve loved for years now. I love seeing you get fired up and love the story and characters as much as I do.

I love how you're enjoying the game. I relive these moments every time I see someone going through them, it's always like the first time and the feelings never lessen. Cannot wait to see you press on.
