Asmongold watches a video by Bellular, who breaks down World of Warcraft players activity and data from the new Blizzard earnings report, just in the last few months there has been an insane subscribers drop-off, which is even more insane when the earnings report data also accounts for the Classic TBC release hype. About half of the WoW players have now quit. Asmongold talks about the main problems of the new expansion and its problems comparatively to other MMOs like Final Fantasy XIV. So that the subscribers drop off is not indicative of the MMORPG genre progressively going out of favor but rather just "WoW is Dead/Dying" slogan more real than ever...

Dude same.... I finally walked away after the first week of shadowlands. I still remember when I thought raiding and leveling was still fun in Cata. And it's just gotten worse each expansion. I always mained a hunter because I love the playstyle... But I still remember having mana in Wrath, Volley AoE, MM and Survival have had so many changes in spells and abilities over the last 10 years that they don't even feel like the same specs Like.... Survival Melee was a literal meme as a playstyle, back in the day

It needs to be said: this drop off started *before* all the scandals within Blizzard HQ. So, when everyone complained that they were making the game too grindy, too much of a time sink, and the devs laughed it off because Daddy Activision wanted more time played per account, we were giving them the warning: "If you keep doing this you'll lose money in the long run." And here we are.

I keep hearing people say "it's no grindier than any other expansion" not fecking true. EVERY expansion up to legion didn't have this 'get on and grind' shit everyday. It was hit max level, do raids or pvp when you want. Since legion it's 'get on everyday or you're going to fall behind'.

Asmon it is not your fault, Blizzard did this to themselves. They refused to listen to feedback, they dropped the ball this expansion, then had a bad and entitled attitude towards constructive criticism. The only people to blame are the Activision and Blizzard higher-ups pulling the strings, silencing voices and stifling game design for short-term profit. All of this was before the lawsuit, which like the Blitzchung incident will cause _some_ players to quit the game for good.

Hello Asmond. I am in my 50's, played wow since 2004. Have a vanilla high warlord (Well he is a Grand Marshall right now). I have played every wow expac at launch and to this date, 9-22-2021 I have not purchased shadowlands and have played maybe a week since its launch. I personally find no interest in the lore, or the premise of the expansion. Yesterday I resubbed for a month, cities are dead on "high pop" servers (I assume everyone is in shadowlands somewhere) the game feels like a shell of its former self. I only tell you this because you are not the cause of their decline. I dont watch you, I dont care for twitch at all, I do not sub to you....I just know your name and you had zero impact on my decision to not play shadowlands. Do not take the fall for Blizzards incompetence, or consider if you were complicit. You are not. If the content was compelling, people would play it, but it's not. It's that simple. I wish you well!

Thank you for telling us your side of story. I know there are many, if not majority of player base who does not care for streamers, and I was wondering what's their take on Asmongold (Who's repeatedly shows up in online article and painted as the war general who brings down Justice Hammer on WoW). As for me, I don't deeply attach to WoW as much, so in my point of view I just see Asmon (or Zack) as someone who says "Bad things are bad" without being afraid of consequences. It is his honesty that I watched him, despise the fact that I never watch any other steamer on twitch before.

I just wanted to comment that I find it sad to see how things are going. Its a sad thing to see things end in this manner. I haven't played wow for many years but I did play it religiously back in 2005 - Cataclysm. And when seeing footage of wow I just remember how I started, and how it felt to play wow back then. It was a classic, loved by critics and players alike, it was a cult phenomena, an instant classic and people knew it. I remember I started with Guild Wars but wanted to try WoW to see what the fuzz was about,.. Man,.. those first steps in Elwyn Forest.. First dungeon,... playing with a IRL friend for the first time,... /wave. Loot, First mount,... Getting that epic mount for my paladin, I mean doing the damn quest for it.... exploring, getting lost, not having a clue how to play my class,.... first time raiding,.... First time PvP... What was it,..the snowy one? Alterac Valley right? ... Farming Honor for gear.... getting my first PvP Gear Set...(On My Rogue, looked sweet) then when Outland hit,... omg,.. servers going down,.. Flying mounts,..first time mounting on a flying mount,.... listening to taverncast podcast, then later TheInstance podcast,.. Man, those were the days,... almost getting teary eyed dammit.,... And then after a good expansion or 2 Activision got em and the cancer started to grow I guess... and also games and game development in general started to change I guess. Now an old-timer like me hardly plays anything but a few Indie titles from time to time. Tbh most games these days are cold, soulless pieces of garbage meant to suck your wallets dry and turn your soft brains into mush. But I'm glad I did experience WoW - The early Years. Before it turned into a soulless abomination.

Yeah dude you pretty much summed it up with that comment. I remember my first Pally Warick on the Perenolde server back in 2007, it was the first MMO I ever played and it had me, my brother and cousin hooked untill the End of WOTLK and When Cata came out....we pretty much kinda fell off playing. My cousin never came back and I would dip my toes into the next couple expacs that came out but I didn't enjoy what the game had become and I finally gave up and left Azeroth too. Its sad and it makes me teary eyed thinking back about when I first started my freshman year of college. It was a cult phenomenon and I loved that game so much I missed classes and it was something that I would lose sleep over because I would stay up late playing and wake up early to log back in. They really had something but then activision came in and just raped the game. Some of my best memories and the best years of my life were when WOW was just getting into BC and man what a fucking blast I had playing that game. This happens with many "games as a service", when new content drops and people come back to play and then half of them leave after they try the new stuff. The problem for MMOs is that they're largely community driven, so letting this happen creates resentment towards developers for not creating an experience that players want to stay to enjoy. Games that are just Raid/Dungeon grinders aren't enough to keep players longterm, and rely entirely on seasonal releases. If WoW wants to keep players, it needs to create player driven content.

“Services” are not a sprint, but a marathon. Blizzard lost everyone that made WoW what it was, about a decade ago. The replacements were too focused on the short-term gains that they forgot about the long-term sustainability of their service. These trends show us that Blizzard has either lost control of their service, or just don’t care to invest the resources needed to maintain their core customers AND focus on growth. Services either grow or die. I believe we’re seeing the latter playing out now.

They go from being privately owned and made by passionate people to corporate folks who have degrees in marketting and the marketing and profit margins become more important than the game. That's not to say all games made with passion are good but there's a huge difference in games that are purely profit driven to games that are passion driven in how they deliver a service and WoW has been moving more and more towards delivering a service for addicts rather than a fun game.

"remasters" of old games are drawing millions of nostalgia fans starving for the RTS era. And WoW is just a so so okay money maker at this point in comparisson. And has been struggling with creative drought for a long while from what i hear. Essentially they might just have decided "knowing Activison" to run WoW until it breaks down. Well no shiet Einstein, what did you want, to play WOW for 50 years and make it feel as fresh and exciting as on day one? Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. And all these edgelords going to FF now and acting like FF is a better game are even more delusional, the game is trash, objectively, not a single aspect of it is anywhere near as good as it is in WOW, even with WOW being at an all time lowest point. They're just FED UP with WOW, and FF is new. It's like someone asking if you'd rather watch the LOTR trilogy over and over again 100 times, or would rather watch another movie after watching LOTR for 99 times. You're damn sure gonna pick another movie, even if it's worse, because you'll absolutely hate LOTR after you watch it 99 times, you'll close your eyes, plug your ears and yell rather than watch it for another second. Same as if you were to hear a song you love for hundreds of times over and over again. You'd start to hate it with a passion, and any other song would be preferable. No matter how good something is, it gets overplayed after a while. The fact that WOW players don't realize this and now blame Blizzard because they don't like playing the 15 year old game as much as they used to anymore, just shows how detached from reality the WOW playerbase is, which is not surprising considering it mostly consists of 30+ year old menchildren who dropped out of highschool back in early 2000's and never achieved anything in life.

@@stevsux4442 The thing about looter games that are well-made is that every expansion, rather than power creep all previous loot into uselessness, provides sidegrades or new options that don't make the previous loot useless. The expansions ideally just expand available options and ways to play rather than make all previous content redundant and pointless, because that's a huge disservice to the work that went into the previous content. Because any time a looter game falls into the powercreep trap, all that does is create a scenario where the players slowly realize that anything they do is pointless because the next expansion will make it all worthless, so the literal only time that anything they obtain will feasibly last in usefulness is in the final possible expansion where no further content will be made. If a game wants to power creep, then it should do so in a way that doesn't make everything beforehand useless. around 7:20, something to consider is seasonal variation. For example, people typically have more time to play in the summer, February is prolly around midterm exams for uni students (not saying this is what's causing the numbers, but there could be underlying factors unrelated to the "health" of the game). So the raw numbers might overstate the issue, somewhat. A crude solution is to compare this difference to the difference between Aug & Feb in other years, as a comparison or base year.

Things like reducing the timer for switching covenants and making some of the systems less rng based would make the community happy When they announce the next expansion they can mention that not all systems they make have been accepted by the player base over the past years (any kind of statement that acknowledges a change) and instead lean back before they had expansion specific systems. The new expansion can focus more on what people used to love about the game (levelling to end game then doing your choice of content such as m+, raiding, pvp etc) and not adding additional systems but maybe working on making the rep grind more appealing to people who like those things. By not using so many resources on a new covenant system or something equally shit they have more resources to put into more and better content for the game. That’s the fucked up part, it’s literally so easy to make wow better and all I’m asking is blizzard stop making these unique systems forcing the player to play in the exact specific way the devs decided. Sure wow will always have its problems but that isn’t really the issue anybody has with the game rn

Giving people bad experiences, making them stop playing. Contributing to an enivronment thats not friendly to newcomers, etc. THATS what he meant. He doesnt mean "my stream" or "me criticising wow" contributed. He means his actions IN GAME, probably OFF STREAM aswell. I often go back to the crossroads and look over Michel Koiter's in-game grave. One of the creators of World of Warcraft. I remember reading his twin brothers words after MK passed away. MK wanted a game where you could start off as nothing and feel like you've clawed your way up to greatness. Where you're not a hero in the game, where the game doesn't call you a hero, but you feel like one because of the community. Where everyone KNEW who you were on that server if you did something amazing. Where people knew your name - but to the NPC's you were just another adventure. It made a real sense of feeling like a true champion, like you were actually doing something. Guilds felt like families and the world felt alive and breathing. The heart of azeroth was her people. I wonder what MK would say if he saw his game today.

I overheard my sister telling someone last night that she couldn't even find pug groups for M+ on her Alliance character anymore because all of the people who choose to push M+ and raid seem to have gone to Horde at this point. For myself, I was part of the player attrition during Nathria, quitting WoW for good about two weeks after the raid dropped because I'd been benched for progression in Normal/Heroic due to the guild having too many raiders (I was on the roster as a Normal/Heroic raider, although I would always be available to fill for Mythic progression later in the tier if they needed, so I was benched to allow the Mythic raiding trials to get in). Ironically, they ended up quitting raiding about 5 weeks later because they didn't have enough players to beat the roster boss anymore, as basically all of the trials had moved on and real life took out a handful of our core team.

I was/am a guild officer (I quit they didn't remove or demote me, cuz I've been with them since wotlk and we're a pretty family guild, although looking at it on website now most people seem to have quit or at least stopped raiding) I left after like 8-9 weeks of Nathria after realizing after killing it for weeks I had received less loot from Nathria than I did in a single night during the first week or so of Nathria with the ulduar timewalking. That was the straw that really broke the camel's back after feeling like I was working a 2nd job only to not get rewarded for my time.

@@ChunkyCoffee Yep. My old guild now still exists basically as a Discord community because we were all pretty close, and there was surprisingly little drama. I think even with being benched, I might have stuck with the game if it hadn't felt like a second full-time job. My primary enjoyment of the game came from raiding with people that I liked. There were no other aspects of the game that made me happy in the same way - even pugging raids wasn't the same (and as a dps with only two Normal boss kills and a mediocre ilevel, even that was out of the question).

@@Malinkadink My sister and a couple of others from my old guild also went Horde on Area 52 to raid. It seems like Area 52 is becoming the go-to server, at least for NA, if you want to do anything.

The part where Bellular goes through the guilds killing Shriekwing vs finishing the last bosses and how guilds quit, goes to show how stupidly long they made these boss fights. Thats what happens when you make bosses have to much HP, players get bored easily and don't want to continue experiencing the same long grind of taking down an insanely high amount of HP on a boss for little reward. So they just quit.

I played this from launch to just at Pandaria release ...loved it but the changes back then pushed me away . My friends left much earlier than I did . I'll miss those times but I'm glad I got out when I did ....
