This year I've been trying to make my shop better organized, and bigger.
Now, I have a basement shop, so actually making the shop physically bigger is quite a challenge. But if you actively get rid of stuff -- as in move stuff OUT of the shop -- then you accomplish the same thing.
My compressor is not particularly large, but every little bit helps.
Also, I do regularly want to use my compressor up in the garage, and since my shop is a basement shop, I then have to carry the compressor up the stairs and out through the shop.
In this video I figure out how to move my compressor to the garage, but still have it provide air to the shop.

Hello Art, I also have a California Air compressor and am adding a remote for power control. Facing the same conditions as you, if the compressor hasn't shut off automatically from reaching set upper level pressure, and I shut the power off, it won't restart when turning power back on. In addition to an 'on/off' switch as you pointed out, the switch is also a valve which releases air pressure in the short tube between the compressor output and the compressed air in the tank. When I turn the power off before automatic shutoff, the motor does not have sufficient startup torque to overcome that needed to compress what is in the short tube. When it shuts off automatically, the switch relieves the air pressure setting the conditions for the next run cycle. The solution I came up with is mounting a small linear actuator to the 'shut off' switch lever, which is then controlled by the remote. While it's not at all a big deal to just let the compressor shut itself off automatically, I'd prefer to do this right so as to avoid a case where I shut the compressor off before a cycle shut itself off. Now, since the linear actuator requires voltage polarity reversal to extend and retract, my remote will simply energize or de-energize the 12 volt supply that powers the small linear actuator. The actuator has an internal automatic cutoff switch so there's no issue leaving 12 volts applied. Having just typed this last statement, I might add a timer circuit that disconnects the 12 volt supply after 2 1/2 seconds. Below is the Amazon description of the actuator. Mini Electric Linear Actuator Stroke 2"-Force 4.5 lbs-12V | High-Speed 1.97"/sec The cutoff switch lever on my compressor is 1.25" long. It moves / rotates close to 90 degrees. Using the circumference of a circle formula, 2r x pi, = 2.5 x 3.14159 = 7.85", then divided by 4 (since the switch lever moves 90 degrees which is 1/4 of a 360 degree circle, = 1.96" (I'll round up to 2"). I'm only adding these details for all to follow how I decided what linear actuator is needed. So the end of the lever moves 2", I selected an actuator with a 2" travel/stroke. I've not yet determined the specific mounting details or the means of connecting to the switch lever, but determining this and what it will look like doesn't seem to horribly complex. When it comes to different projects and the approach I take, I'm well aware the path is more complicated than necessary to just wait for the compressor to automatically shut off, then turn the stupid power off, I've found great satisfaction and gained significant skill developing solutions in the process. Art, thanks for reading down to here if you did. I like your shop layout and the Project 'make my shop bigger'. Blessings, Bill Bores SteelBender Innovations Cypress, TX.

Good vid as always.I've been using an existing rubber hose for years to bring air to a drop over my work area.Its attatched to a curly hose on the ceiling for the drop.This in turn is attatched via a cord that runs across the ceiling to a corner where its fastened to a weight.I pull down the curly to use and when its released the weight pulls it back up to the ceiling out of the way

Since you are having problems with remote or tired of always having dead batteries in the remote, use two 3-way switches off of a circuit and appropriate junction boxes and a wall plug or wire in a section of 15 amp extension cord with the female end available. No batteries, solid system.
@Wordsnwood
@Wordsnwood Жыл бұрын
A three way switch would have the same problem as the remote with this compressor. You'd still need to let the compressor fully cycle before turning it off. But yes, a 3-way switch is of course an option.

Why not use a metal pipe through that wall? Seal the pipe in the hole using mortar and/or sealant to minimize bugs and temperature changes and excess noise in the shop. Clamp the piping on both sides of the wall to make it stable. Use appropriate adapters for pneumatic connections. Seems like a good idea for locating the compressor outside the shop.
@Wordsnwood
@Wordsnwood Жыл бұрын
I would think that a metal pipe would transmit temperature far far more than a rubber hose. It's true I still need to caulk/seal around the hose, but I was waiting a few months to be sure I was happy with the setup.

GREAT simple project Art. Question, unless you have an air leak, why do you need the remote switch?? The compressor has the auto shutoff and if you are away and worried about it, just unplug it?? Enjoy the quiet! !! !!!

It probably takes too much oomph to start compressor under load. The built in switch as well as the pressure limit switch likely trip a relief valve that reduces pressure for start.

Run the compressor at full pressure and add a regulator in the shop. Much easier to adjust the pressure. California Air Tools makes very good equipment. Mine has been going strong for years now with no issues whatsoever. And relatively quiet operation.

great idea for the wireless option. I find myself going to the compressor to start and stop it in the corner of my shop all the time. I should just get a wireless remote so I can do it from anywhere in the shop! Also I like your idea for finding the hole through the wall. I have wanted to run conduit (for ethernet etc) into my garage for ages but haven't because I was worried I was going to drill in the wrong spot. This will help with that worry immensely.

I could be wrong but I would guess that little air that escapes when u manually flip it is bleeding air off the cylinder head sho if u have to turn it off in the middle of filling just bleed air off with a blow off tool.

I think I would have just opted for a tyre inflator for the garage and kept the compressor downstairs. I like the regulator (or whatever it's called in English) within reach. But fun in the shop with stuff you already own is also worth a lot. Too many options.

I've been thinking of doing exactly this, I am going to run the hose straight down the center and have it access to both sides, just not sure how to have it retract up to the ceiling to keep it out of the way, just like the hose reals. That's why I haven't started.

As long as you do not have any leaks in the system, then you could leave it powered on all the time. There maybe very small leaks at the quick connect hose fittings, as well as the compressor "back-flow valve".

@@Wordsnwood It's probably helpful that the hose won't see any UV exposure. You could help extend the life of the hose by treating it with some rubber dressing like 303 Aerospace Protectant. Probably only need to do that every 6 months since it's indoors and protected.

@@Wordsnwood Make sure you get some of the fire rated intumescent sealant. The 3M yellow that's rated for up to 2hrs is sufficient for a garage as the fire rating of the wall is less than that. The intumescent expands during a fire so if you have a fire in the garage and the hose melts, the sealant will at least foam up enough to help seal that hole. Just a tip from an architect woodworker who's a big fan of your channel.
