Those I-5’s are great engines if you give them the proper care and maintenance. I used to have an 2006 Hummer H3 (3.5L) with 305,000 miles before selling it. Still was on original engine and running like new.

I bought a 2005 GMC Canyon new with the 3.5. At about 8,000 miles a valve spring retainer broke and dropped on the piston. GM send engineers to inspect the cylinder head and block. Ended up replacing the head and piston. Gave me a 5 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty.

I need a warranty!!! I have been looking into a straight swap of a lower mileage engine but they all seem to have the same problems. So, I think I have settled on rebuilding this one. At least I know it's done right and should last a long time. Thanks for watching.

Late comment but the only way to have a "easy" LS swap in a H3 is if it's a 08-10. The 06 and 07 frame is a bit different and had to be notched by GM to fit the 5.3 for the alpha. So unless you plan on notching a 06-07 frame it's not necessarily easy.

Those dash lights used to be called IDIOT LIGHTS....because idiots would ignore them and keep driving. Kinda like what you did. Too bad you destroyed this little hummer. The 06-07 h3 had defective cylinder heads. They were under recall up to a certain mileage, if yours made it past 60,000 GM considered your head non defective and did not replace it. How do I know this? Been there myself, my engine missed the cutoff by 8000 miles so I paid the full cost out of pocket. Putting transmission oil in the block thinned the oil and made things worse....idiot lights mmm,mmm. Oh well.

Someone put wrong oil in too heavy and threw timming off on camshaft sensor you have bad valve or premature detonation is burning spark plugs messing timming, you have metal to metal knock. Heavy oil destroys this engine.. Your pcv valve hose if clogged will cause detonation burning spark plugs throwing timming off.

About eight months ago I bought a 2007 H3 X. I bought it from a lady in Birmingham Alabama 4 $10,000. It had 142000 miles on it. It stayed in the shop for the first 6 months I had it I had the mechanic replace the radiator, water pump, valve cover gasket, manifold exhaust, and had a new transmission installed. So now I have a $16,000 H3. Nobody's fault but my own I broke my own Rule and that was to never buy a GM product again. I have a 2011 Toyota FJ TRD with a hundred and fifty thousand miles on it sitting in the garage. I'm going to save that and give it to my son one day. That's the reason I bought the H3 for myself as a daily driver.

First drain your oil, your rod bearings and crank are probably toast. Your oil will more than likely have all kinds of silver colored particles in it. Pretty much had the same knock on an 07 H3 I picked up, had 3 spun rod bearings from low oil pressure caused by a spun balance shaft bearing. So had to swap in another 3.7 engine. Since they are out of production, they are expensive, and found this out after I had already bought the truck. If you have any questions, I would be glad to help out.

@@roygarcia81 I am in the process of swapping my an engine from an 06' H3 to a 07' H3. Do you know if there are any wiring harness differences? The good engine has 99k miles on it and was running before the accident. Any other issues I need to know about before I tackle this job? Thanks..
@roygarcia81
@roygarcia81 4 жыл бұрын
@@motoMo-wc8un Should be just a straight swap, it's the 2008's that have a separate ecm and body control module.(different harness) Also check for broken exhaust manifold bolts which is common. Flywheel bolts can be accessed when you remove starter. And letting air out of the front tires helps, as the engine is pretty tall. Just got mine running great and lost 3rd and 4th gear, so will be rebuilding the transmission soon. Dont forget to have some beer so you can pretend you're having a good time......

Man! I had same exact issue last month. Same sound and oil light. Died on freeway and had to restart. I didn't want to have to pay the mechanic for a teardown, so I found another 2006 Hummer that was T-boned, and bought the motor for $2,200 and had it installed. So far it's running fine and I never did find out what that knock was, and why the oil light would come on and off, and why it kept stalling on me at red lights and on the freeway when I had to stop.

Banestudent21 It has a mild misfire I feel but the check engine light has not come on yet. I have not looked at it due to house projects. I did clean the throttle body, replace a cracked breather, cleaned the mass air. I manage a shop so From experience I prefer dealer parts only and coils are expensive. My next move will be spark plugs. The miss fire goes away and no loss of power so I’m not worried about to much yet. My family likes this thing so much I would put a head on it if I had too. Mint frame and body. I’ll do a video on it when the dust settles

I see your temperature is above normal. I had this same issue and GM told me it was normal. One day it got too close for comfort. Before that the Water Pump went out and it was perfect timing. I wind up replacing fan clutch and water pump. Its been at normal temp for three years now. I've had the h3 for five years. Fan clutch and water pump was bad. Oh yeah might I add I also replaced the radiator as well. I had extra money. And was on vacation lol. Radiator looked old so being I was changing water pump etc anyways. I just did the whole thing. I know hummer don't get alot of love but they're really reliable vehicle long distance and every day travel. I have 172 thousand miles and change. I bought it with 67 thousand and change. I've been Texas and back a few times Oklahoma and back a few time etc I live in Tampa FL. Once you get a good working engine you will also love it.
