If you're below about 1500 the Stafford probably scores very well. Between 1500-2000 it's a bit speculative, you can play it once to test if your opponent knows what they're doing and if they do then stop. If you're 1800 vs an IM there's no chance anyway so you might as well choose whatever you think is fun.

That's the top engine move too, but he's just relying too much on his prep. Like he said in the game, he's more used to the position with Qh4, and Bxg4 doesn't work there because after Bxg4 retakes, the f pawn is pinned by the queen on h4, so Bxg4 was already ruled out in his mind I guess.

Eric, what about 7. Nc3 for white? This seems to score pretty well for white and has the straight forward plan of queenside castling.
@myblock4195
@myblock4195 9 ай бұрын
I’m not Eric, but I think it was safer to play 7. c3 instead as you start to shut down black’s attack/plan. Nc3 gives black another move on their attack essentially, because the knight can’t protect the king from that square. Unless I knew I could can play a sharp position perfectly, I wouldn’t play Nc3.
@karelspinka3031

Nc3 and h3 are a decent option for White in my opinion, however Black might create problems with b5-b4 kicking the knight away.

When black plays h4, is it good idea to pin the knight with Bg5 as no pawn could kick it back?
@aristodemosii.1980
@aristodemosii.1980 9 ай бұрын
Sometimes later down the track. I wouldn't rush with it though as Black's Knight is kind of useless anyway when White doesn't castle Kingside, but White's dark squared Bishop can be an important piece later on when the centre pawns start to advance.

@@tfwthewhen I guess the sequence is Bg5 Bxf2 Kxf2 Noxell Kg1 Qxg5 dxe4. White lost a bishop and 2 pawns, with rook blocked by king, but black lost a knight and a bishop. It seems white still has some material advantage. Or Nxe4 Ke1 Qxg5 dxe4 Qxg2, black gets more pawns on the king side I guess white won't choose this route.
